The claims first appeared in Bild newspaper on February 6th, which described the men as a “rioting sex mob,” speculating that they had come from a refugee home in central Hesse.
In an article since taken down from its website, the tabloid interviewed a well-known chef who runs a restaurant on Fressgass street, as well as a 27-year-old woman.
The chef, Jan Mai, claimed that 50 Arab men caused havoc in his restaurant as well as in others. He also claimed that they sexually assaulted women and stole jackets.
The woman told the newspaper that “they grabbed me under my skirt, between the legs and on my breast - everywhere.”
But police confirmed on Tuesday to the Frankfurter Rundschau that their investigation of the allegations had led them to believe that they were spurious.
“Interviews with alleged witnesses, guests and employees led to major doubts with the version of events that had been presented,” the police said.
“One of the alleged victims was not even in Frankfurt at the time the allegations are said to have taken place.”
The police were indeed unequivocal in how they understood the events to have unfolded.
“Masses of refugees were not responsible for any sexual assaults in the Fressgass over New Year. The accusations are completely baseless,” the police said.
Before the Bild report, no sexual assaults were reported to police from Fressgass over New Year.
Prosecutors are now looking into whether Mai and the 27-year-old woman made up the story.
Bild newspaper is bitterly resented by the German left, which accuses it of having stoked hatred against immigrants over decades.

Too late, Anti-Immigrant Parties and Euroskeptic have been gaining power.
Yellow journalism should be a crime.

That actually goes too far, Who decides if it is "Yellow Journalism"
That is why I'm Hesitant for full on banning of Fake news.
Because if it's US current Government then guess who is "Yellow Journalism"

I dunno, I think it's usually pretty easy to check if something is fake news or overly sensationalized.
all you need is a reliable third party to fact check news, but where would you get a reliable third party from?

Doesn't matter If it's banned a law could passed that would make it government controlled.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. Are you talking about a law that ends up making the media government controlled?

I'm talking about a law that makes the watchdog government controled
Frank Luther Mott's characteristics of yellow journalism are a good place to start if you want a solid definition, though it could use an update given the advances in technology
scare headlines in huge print, often of minor news
lavish use of pictures, or imaginary drawings
use of faked interviews, misleading headlines, pseudoscience, and a parade of false learning from so-called experts
emphasis on full-color Sunday supplements, usually with comic strips
dramatic sympathy with the "underdog" against the system.
Yellow journalism really isn't that hard to pin, and laws against it would almost certainly cripple the giants like Murdoch who peddle this kind of shit. The less money involved the better as well.

It can be if people are identified.
Which is why I never trust a story about an alleged assault without a perpetrator identified. It's too easy to sidestep libel laws by just saying "[person of dubious national origin] did X."
If someone is identified, if a suit is filed, if someone is arrested, that can be trusted. But saying a crowd of immigrants caused havoc? That's at best unverifiable, and at worst totally false.
It's an interesting era for journalism. A lot of us are embracing our "untouchability" in an time of fake news and alternative facts, but it's important to remember that there's more riding on us than our immediate paychecks. Credibility is everything in this industry; you lose that, you lose your career. And a lot of journalists are burning theirs like it's going out of style. Which is why it's so important that we verify everything, all the time. I'm sorry we're leaving the burden of proof on our readers, but it would be wise to search for independent verification while we figure out what the hell is going on in our industry.
I read somewhere that the EU is setting up a task force to deal with fake news and Russian influence in democracy. At one point I would have called foul but at this rate it's probably a lesser evil than just letting it continue to spiral out of control.
