Saw this pop up on my Facebook feed from ABC News. Also checked their twitter: https://twitter.com/UofOklahoma
Shooting on campus. Avoid Gould Hall. Seek immediate shelter in place.
No more info at this time. Updated news source: http://abcnews.go.com/US/shooting-university-oklahoma/story?id=21623743
Oh my god, we just had a shooting at Purdue yesterday. THIS NEEDS TO STOP.

I really wonder what's going through people's heads when they have the idea to go shoot up a school full of innocent people. [editline]22nd January 2014[/editline] fuckin' automerge
Not this again. fuck. I wonder if it was a student, a staff member, a parent, or somebody entirely unrelated who's to blame for this.
I came here expecting a sensationalist headline about a film or photo shoot. I was arong.
I'm hoping shooter doesn't off him/herself, I want to know their motive as to why they decided to shoot up the place.
How many times has it happened already this year alone?
I'm hoping the shooter doesn't kill themselves like a lot of them do, I want to know their motive as to why they decided to shoot up the place.
Their motives can usually be identified if you look over their internet history and personal possessions for rants against how unfair life is and/or suicide notes written just before the incidents - though this is mainly applicable to the commando type who wants to go out in a blaze of final glory, martyrdom, so to speak.
How many times has it happened already this year alone?
Twice?
Twice?
This is the 6th. January 9, 2014 January 13, 2014 January 14, 2014 January 17, 2014 January 21, 2014 and now today
How many times has it happened already this year alone?
Well, this is the fourth one. And it's only January 22nd... Edit: Or sixth, if NoDachi's correct.
It's probably just as petty as the last one. (last one was because a girl brokeup with him for someone else)
Dude, here in India, people commit suicide (or try to) for that sort of thing all the time here. It doesn't help that it's already been romanticized by our film industry. If they try to start imitating school shootings though, we're fucked. Our police can't even properly deal with ordinary suicide attempts.
-snip-
As long as the media continues to make celebrities out of shooters it's not going to stop happening.
I'm pretty sure the issue is a lot more complicated than "oh its on the news!"
As of this time, no evidence has been found of any shots being fired. There are no injuries reported at this time. Both the Norman and OU police department have very quickly responded as well as emergency personnel. President Boren is at the scene. Normal campus operations have resumed except for Gould Hall where additional checking is continuing.

As long as the media continues to make celebrities out of shooters it's not going to stop happening.

Many of the shooters told Secret Service investigators that alienation or persecution drove them to violence. According to the United States Secret Service, instead of looking for traits, the Secret Service urges adults to ask about behavior: 1) What has this child said? 2) Do they have grievances? 3) What do their friends know? 4) Do they have access to weapons? 5) Are they depressed or despondent?
this is a start, though I can add some more later.

Wasn't even aware there is a whole dedicated Wikipedia article about all the school shootings in the USA alone. And the list is HUGE !
What are the main causes for the Suicide, I know alot of people are enslaved in India ...?
As previously mentioned: breakups are the biggest reason for suicide attempts (that I've seen) so far. Following this is getting into heavy debt and being unable to get out of it. Following this is murder-suicide of your whole family because you didn't like a thing about your own life.

Jesus, there have been a lot of these recently, even for America.
Wasn't a shooting apparently. It was equipment backfiring. I have a lot of friends that go to OU too, glad they're safe.
Wasn't a shooting apparently. It was equipment backfiring. I have a lot of friends that go to OU too, glad they're safe.
That's good to hear.
The fact that so many non-shooting "shootings" are reported on goes to show how much our media LOVES this stuff. It's sickening.

Surely the fact that equipment backfiring can cause a campus lockdown is more indicative of how much a problem school shootings actually are than media hype. Like I'm sure the buzzing of a low flying prop plane can send Yemeni bedouin tribesmen running for cover.

There have been fewer than 400 school shooting deaths since 1980, but over 6000 (edging on 6500+) murders PER YEAR with handguns.
What are you getting at with the second half of this post?
That the media disproportionately focusing on specific types of crime makes people more nervous about them, even if they're statistically less common. Like how people are afraid of flying because of widely-publicized plane crashes that get plastered all over the media, ignoring that they're far more likely to die in a car crash driving to the airport. A kid is more likely to drown in a backyard pool than be injured or killed in a school shooting. That's not to say that school shootings aren't important and should be ignored, but the fact that the media goes nuts over them for the ratings and ignores much more mundane pool deaths isn't really indicative of their respective threat to the safety of the people.
some things are more news worthy than others its like saying 9/11 got too much news coverage because so many people die of cancer every year. I'll lament the day when a bunch of kids getting murdered at a place of learning isn't newsworthy.
