You might as well ask why we have troops in like every country.
its so that we can gossip about them at thanksgiving dinner
We must keep our world hegemony somehow!

Better backstab your friends before they backstab you.

Scary advice, coming from a Canadian :v:
Information is power, and also, we're probably just as spied on :V.
Why is the US so paranoid?

What superpower isn't paranoid of other countries that sometime in the future could threaten our world leadership?
Or is Israel who loves to just kinda start shit.
Ben Gurion did say, when he founded the Mossad (out of the old CIC and CIIS) in the fifties that its primary directive was to collect information and that "For our state which since its creation has been under siege by its enemies. Intelligence constitutes the first line of defence...we must learn well how to recognise what is going on around us."

Stop pretending America is the king of the world, it is not.
1970s - The US government spies on a political party on a small scale? Convict everyone and switch presidents. Protect privacy and fair political funding with more regulations.
2010s - The US government spies on literally everyone? Who cares, of course the big brother is watching.
What superpower isn't paranoid of other countries that sometime in the future could threaten our world leadership?
Russia. Because it'll just fall apart without any outside force, just give it some time.
Stop pretending America is the king of the world, it is not.
Of course it's not king of the world.
It's the emperor of the world.
Because the USA is the only country that spies.
EDIT: Only 2/5 of the stories posted in the OP are from today or the day before. You trying to start something OP?

I'm more of a fan of tarts than pies anyhow.

The use of "emperor" implies the US has it's own empire though.

Are you seriously implying the US didn't spy on everyone during the cold war?
Are you seriously implying the US didn't spy on everyone during the cold war?
i think it is more about public's response to it

Too bad the USA is about to fall from it's throne thanks to a corrupt as fuck administration that ruined it's economy.
It's time for other countries to boss people around now.

let The Fourth Reich begin
Why is the US so paranoid?
Good question I guess. I imagine this kind of thing has no support by the average american citizen?
Frankly it's terrible that there are americans who have internalised the view that you have always and will be always spied on and that it is justifiable. You are enabling all of it. The violations of privacy on today's scale are unprecendented and yet no one is willing to protest.
Everyone is spying on everyone at every moment of every day. Anyone who is surprised by this is again very naive.
What do people think the NSA, CIA etc (and their counterparts around the world) do with all the millions of dollars thrown at them? It is their job to know what is going on, that just happens to involve a major breach of the worlds privacy.
Prior to PRISM and friends coming to light did anyone on here genuinely not believe it was happening?
Just to clarify, I don't think that makes it right. People who are truly outraged by this have been outraged by it for years and have been protesting against it prior to Snowden making it public.
Stop pretending America is the king of the world, it is not.
I personally think that "King Asshole of the Western Hemisphere" is the most fitting title possible for this country. I don't think any other nation in this hemisphere can beat us at constantly being dicks about everything.
We're like the negative-universe version of Canada, in terms of dickishness.
The use of "emperor" implies the US has it's own empire though.
You completely misunderstood the point of my post.
1970s - The US government spies on a political party on a small scale? Convict everyone and switch presidents. Protect privacy and fair political funding with more regulations.

I think the fact that any person can contact at any time any other person if they know their info, and read about any world event in almost real time has something to do with that mentality. Everyone's connected, so it's not percieved as big of a deal as it would be in the 70's
Is anyone surprised? I'm not
