According to accounts by Watts and her husband Brian James Lucas, two police officers mistook the couple for a prostitute and client when they were seen showing affection in public. When the officers asked Watts to produce a photo ID when questioned, she refused. Watts was subsequently handcuffed and placed in the back of a police cruiser while the officers attempted to figure out who she was. The two officers released Watts shortly afterwards.

essentially being arrested for refusing to show identification card
My girlfriend and I do pda all the time, that's not very comforting to hear.
essentially being arrested for refusing to show identification card
which isn't even required by CA Law either, so she didn't even break any laws.
Is it hard to be a cop? I mean are there arrest quotas you have to meet on the job similar to a gamestop employee's pre-order quota? In these stories it just seems like cops are really desperate to grasp at straws on a given situation to arrest someone.
Getting detained is not the same thing as being arrested.
okay sorry
essientially being forcefully handcuffed and put in the back of a police car for not showing an identification card

Isn't it fucking stupid.
It's your right to not show ID if you don't want too, but they can arrest you and hold you till they figure out who you are anyway.
What the fuck is the point of your right?

What's the point of withholding your ID in the first place? Like it takes 10 seconds to take it out and give it to them. It's not like they are gonna run off with it.

This isn't Nazi Germany, you don't have to prove you are a citizen or identify yourself while walking down a street or kissing your significant other.

They didn't arrest her. They detained her.

Not saying it is, but if a cop comes up to you and thinks you are doing something bad. And simply showing them or ID will prove you are not doing bad things. Then why wouldn't you show it?
They didn't arrest her. They detained her.
She was illegally detained then.
They didn't arrest her. They detained her.
As if her ID would have had "Prostitute" written on it.

How exactly would her showing her ID have proved she was not a prostitute?

No? Because the douchebag just accused me of being a criminal, and if he as much as touches me afterwards the departments getting sued.

the fact that her name would've been the same as her husbands?
the fact that her name would've been the same as her husbands?
And if they weren't married but boyfriend and girlfriend?

Because the cops had no business to be stopping them. If they were actually committing a crime, they wouldn't need to ask for an ID anyway, they'd just be arrested and sorted out back at the department.
As if her ID would have had "Prostitute" written on it.
What does that have to do with anything I said?
And if they weren't married but boyfriend and girlfriend?
In this particular situation they weren't. But if that was the case then I don't know.
But that isn't the point I'm trying to make. All I'm saying is, you cause yourself more trouble by withholding your ID then you are getting out of.

In Australia some police departments have quotas for catching speeding. It's ridiculous, cops in well behaved areas need to make false fines just so they don't get ass-fucked by upper ranks.

Nope, because if they were asking for ID they obviously didn't have a reason to arrest or detain you prior to you showing ID.
Also you do know that there's married couples with different last names right?

And what Cubeman and I are saying is, that's wrong that you get in trouble for not showing an ID.
Yes, it's easy but it's not mandatory.

In most of the United States, Quota's are illegal so they control quotas indirectly by overtime. If you meet your unofficial quota you'll get more overtime then the rest or whatever is available. Whereas if you don't meet it you will get no overtime or very little at all. You can also expect more desk notes or overlooked for promotions.
You still haven't answered the question, what do they have to lose from showing them the ID and what do they have to gain from withholding it?
I honestly can't see a reason for someone to withhold it.

Their privacy? Forcing the cop to fuck off and stop acting like they're criminals?
the fact that her name would've been the same as her husbands?
My parents have different last names.

Just because you can't think of a reason doesn't mean there is no reason. Maybe you are a goody goody two shoes who has nothing to hide from anybody and will willingly follow what anybody says and have no expectation of privacy or being treated with respect, but that doesn't mean everybody is exactly like you.
I'm not trying to say it's a bad thing and people shouldn't do it. I was just honestly confused as to why people would do it.
I didn't realize that some people saw it as an invasion of privacy.

And there goes Godwin's law.
