In an email to VG247 this afternoon, McGee said that the film rights to the Alice games were purchased by a group of Hollywood film producers called Collision Entertainment over 12 years ago. Since then however, the IP has remained dormant, other than potential projects with interested partners, writers, directors and producers
“Those same producers recently approached me and offered me a first chance at purchasing the film rights before they put them on the open market,” McGee told me.
“This is a kindness on their part – they could have gone straight to market and highest bidder, but they told me they think the rights belong with the creator of the property – me. I think they’re right about this. I’d hate to see the rights end up in the hands of some faceless corporation or other entity with no emotional connection to the property.”
[h=1]The Pitch[/h]With the acquisition of the film rights to the "Alice" property, we will begin work on animated short films inspired by the "Alice: Otherlands" concept. Our long term goal will be the development and production of a feature length film version of Alice's story.
If this campaign is successful you will receive, at a minimum, an animated adventure into Otherlands. Beyond that, the success of this campaign will bring us one step closer to seeing Alice on the big screen.

American McGee is an untalented hack who can't make a good game to save his life, his designs for the past decade have been based around trying to live up to his Alice game and repeat it, while the only reason he even still has a job in the industry was because he worked on some levels in Doom.
-nevermind i understand-

Both Alice games are good. Doomsday LA or whatever is lame, and so are the majority of the games he has touched. However, the concepts behind all of his games are always very cool and I honestly doubt American McGee is the one who is making the games not good. I doubt he has all that much to do with the development of them and his position at Spicy Horse similar to Tim Schafer and Double Fine.
I do not trust this man with my money. He keeps making Kickstarters to replace the ones that didn't make money. I believe this is his third in the past year.

He did write a post-mortem about that, acknowledging it was terrible. It seems like it was mostly due to a low-budget, cultural differences and general incompetence of the team rather than specifically him (although he does admit he made several mistakes).

Pretty much. And generally the weakest part of his games tend to be the core gameplay, whereas the visuals and story are usually well done. If he's making films then gameplay wouldn't be an issue.
When 2 of the 10 games you've made in the past decade aren't terrible, You're statistically incompetent.

His works for id was great though.
And that was 20 years ago.
Honestly, it can't be worse than Tim Burton's Alice.
So American McGee is already coming out ahead.

Why are you so angry sounding about American McGee?

He gets angry at anything and everything he dislikes
His Alice games left some to be desired but I found myself playing through Madness Returns continuously and enjoying myself most of the time, particularly due to the aesthetics. On top of my general interest in the surrealism of Lewis Carroll's classic, there's something about American's interpretation of the classic that really clicks with me. I'd love to give him my money just to see what comes out of this. Sort of like you might want to buy a really funny and impulsive guy alcohol just to see what he ends up doing.

Yeah, he seems to "get it" in a way that a lot of other interpretations don't, and the weird atmosphere is just right. His respect for the source material shows.
Just finished Alice: Madness Returns a few days ago. The games were very drawn out, and the dialogue was pretty shit. The combat was fun though and the art just great. But in the end I don't have much faith in them delivering something extraordinary so I'm skipping the Kickstarter.
Speaking of American McGee games: did anyone play Scrapland back in the day?
I remember quite enjoying that game.
Oh no bit what about that ozombie no one was excited for

IMO dialogue was generally great, in that and the first game. It has a nonsensical vibe like the original books, which adds to the atmosphere. It's probably a matter of taste, though.

They cancelled that campaign because it was pretty obvious it wasn't going to succeed, and they have a limited time window to buy the film rights. This one seems to be doing rather better (~20% within the first couple of days), which makes sense since we know more about what to expect.
