I keep throwing my money at the screen and nothing happens. Make something happen before my arms hurt. Please.
Hardly proof of concept when it's just a map. Until we see some actual coding going on and gameplay features this doesn't mean jack.
Nah but it's still a gauge of interest.
I guess, but people really shouldn't get hopes up for a full blown mod just from a map.
Ofcourse not, but system shock 2 is a wonderful game and if anyone's ever considering remaking an old game in a newer engine, it'd be a sure hit.
No doubts there, as long as it was a logical port with smarter design choices etc. The only problem would be getting the right atmosphere because everything right down to how you maneuver added to the atmosphere in that game.
Maybe I'm in the minority here, but when I hear people remaking old games in better, newer engines I don't expect 1:1 recreation with the same geometry and textures.

Same here. If you're going to remake something on a BETTER engine, then you should take advantage of it. If it's just a direct port, why even bother?
Looks really stale. No actual lighting, no detail in the map itself, and in general boring map design.
It's supposed to be an HD remake. Not copy/paste the map exactly with 0 effort.
This isn't a remake, hell it isn't even a mod, it's just a 1:1 recreation of a map, and not even a good recreation that's some terrible mapping. Why would the first poster want to pay for that?!

I think maybe you're being a tad unfair. The mapping clearly has a lot of effort put into it but it seems the mapper himself is very inexperienced hence the somewhat unattractive mapping.
Regardless it's not a map I'd be happy to see in any mod or gamemode.
Its just a map, he got the scaling wrong in the levels, its really small, and I dont see this ever finishing.
Ever.

I'm being harsh because they way he's announcing it and talking in his video is like he's making some indie title or a proper HD remake, he made a map for crying out loud and is saying "they guys on the internet were saying they wanted a remake, let them know I'm doing it". Like really dude you made your first hammer map aren't you thinking to far ahead? It annoys me because he doesn't notice just how incredibly inexperienced he is but talks like he's a veteran.
That's kinda my reasoning.
I think, if he could get the help, he should consider prettying up the textures and suchlike. Look at Halo Anniversary. Same idea; It's the same story, same maps and same game-play, but sexier.
The work so far looks really bright and gaudy, perhaps some creative use of the source engines lighting could enhance the horror element of the game.
And because non professionals sounding professional offends some people: I think he should do more graphics.
I am not going to lie, I would highly prefer if someone remade the original System Shock, instead.
If anyone was going to do a proper system shock 2 HD or remake, it would be the actual people who made it.
Not some guy who found the Source SDK.
As much as I'd like a remake, making a direct copy of the game on a different engine isn't a good idea.
I mean let's face it, the graphics in System Shock 2 haven't aged well.

Thank god for graphical enhancement mods.

It isn't that he's non-professional sounding professional, it's that he doesn't even understand how much of an undertaking his task is, and acts as though his simple map is a grand achievement, when it seems like his first ever hammer map. I have no issue with him being a beginner, hell I was a beginner modeler, programmer and mapper and still are in some areas but I didn't run around spouting how I was making a grand System Shock HD Remake, I understood how much I still had to learn and wasn't screaming illusions of grandeur.
It's naive and annoying because he belittles the amount of effort real professionals have to take, this is something i'd find in the beginner section of any HL2 mapping thread not on a video of someone professing he's fulfilling everyone's dreams of a System Shock HD remake.
Do you know how many mods are out there? Do you know out of how many of those mods there are incredible mappers, coders, modelers, now take those mods and about 80-90% of them were never complete, and now consider some of the biggest mod projects ever such as Black Mesa Source, which has been in development forever and has unlike many mods a pretty serious and dedicated team.
Now take this guy, he's hardly started the project and he's made his first hammer map, he's talking about getting into areas of programming which he hasn't the faintest idea of, his lack of knowledge is clear in the video when he calls a brush a BSP, a BSP is binary space partitioning, it is a form of occlusion via subdividing planes of view. An object can't be a BSP, a BSP is the process Source uses to occlude the map and prevent it from drawing vertices not yet seen by the player. Now obviously he's going to need people to help him, but due to his inexperience it's likely hes not going to know to vet those people and will probably end up with a bunch of beginners, if he does outsource those people will tire of the project and likely also abandon it.
I like how he says that took him a couple of months, and acts like hes a mapper, this is him getting into mapping.
Also some guy has made an amazing system shock 2 map, and its for TTT in Gmod and you dont see him flaunting shit around like hes making the next system shock 2 HD remake, it even had a cool working vending machine system that took credits you found around the map.

Thank you, this is exactly my point. I suggest people in this thread to learn a bit about mapping. I'm actually quite surprised how many winners and attention this guy is getting for a simple hammer map. I assumed he would immediately get a bunch of boxes. Most people in the beginner mapping section get berated for much much less, but to make such absurd claims, it's arrogant and isn't in the slightest bit humble.
So hopefully you'll forgive the aggressive tone of my wording, but this person hasn't the faintest idea of what he's doing least the faintest idea of how much effort this kind of project entails.

Oh wait now he's on Rock Paper shotgun, really. I can find thousands of beginner maps that have copies stuff from halo and what not, this really bothers me. Are gamers this ignorant of the game creating process? This guy is incredibly inexperienced and has made a simple map but people are praising him as if he'd already created the remake?
I find it rather funny that people are screaming KICKSTARTER on other forums when they saw this.

Im not surprised.
I honestly should just start a kickstarter, say im making an Indie boardgame that is based around cancer research for gay orphans who dont have money for wheelchairs that also is built on a voxel engine while I draw some shitty concept art based off women rights in video games, while I try to explain how I am mistreated because of my race and that my parents cannot accept me for who I am while I hold 2 kittens and a puppy.
I would probably get $100,000 if I made a really well edited video that made me seem serious, maybe some close ups to some cancer patients while playing this

Maybe he has mapped in UE3 where BSP is actually something and made a mistake :v: (optimistic)

I'm REALLY tired of the remake/reboot/sequel frenzy that's been going on for however long now
it's fucking obnoxious. there is almost no original material being produced by hollywood or [gaming hollywood]
plinkett really wasn't joking. 95% of media these days is remakes, reboots, reimaginings, or fraudulent sequels

A real System Shock 2 HD remake done by Irrational Games would be fucking amazing though.
For movies its different, when they remake or reimagine movies they fuck up and change the movie completely pretty much.
For a game it would just be a graphics update.
