Coincidentally a lot of the Portal people who got hired are working on Artifact. edit: I wonder what Valve will look like in 5 or 10 years
I really like steam and it's famous sales but I miss the old, game-making Valve I spent weeks/months/years in the Source SDK, mapping shitty random maps for GMod where i was basically just fucking with every entity I could. I'm sad to hear updates have left hammer a lot harder to use these days, nevermind how archaic it is compared to other modelling programs. I remember getting so hyped for HL2 episodes, Portal, Left 4 Dead. TF2 was really great too even if I wasnt really on the hype train for it
Recently found this old ass video again and it took me back to a time when Valve was about to release another big title. It was around the L4D2 boycott shenanigans, but I remember staying home from school just so I could finish The Parish after running through the beta a thousand times. also I miss big man Chet.
It'd be nice if game-making Valve could splinter off and have Steam become its own company.
It'd be nice if game-making Valve could splinter off and have Steam become its own company.
That would be really hard for several reasons, first that who would run Steam? They have no documentation on how to run the service afaik and the team switching means the only guy who new how to change something is now working on something else. But that is a problem with all Valve products. Secondly the cabal leaders don't want to give up their main cash source and have to rely on their existing titles for money or make something new.
It's interesting to me that valve is a private company specifically so they wouldn't have to cater to the whims of shareholders and could make games like they wanted, yet basically ended up falling prey to greed despite that.
edit: this was the first downloadable game i ever played, and i loved it just for the novelty that it was free, steam has absolutely ruined any sense of wonder i had like this as a kid
Hooly fuck, Exteel. Rocket+Rectifier Last Stand on Level 5. Man, that game was great. A shame NCSoft pulled the plug.
The valve community seems to have made the exact same video 20 times, that takes talent.
Coincidentally a lot of the Portal people who got hired are working on Artifact. edit: I wonder what Valve will look like in 5 or 10 years
Artifact is still being worked on? We literally heard nothing about it since it was announced like 1.5 years ago. It was an obvious attempt at trying to cash in on the recent card games that were getting released (gwent, hearthstone, and that skyrim cardgame) but by this point its so painfully late that hopefully it gets the Episode 3 treatment
do you guys remember your first experience with steam-esque platforms
i had to install steam for portal when i was 10 and asked "what the hell is this xfire ripoff" :boxhide:
Artifact is still being worked on? We literally heard nothing about it since it was announced like 1.5 years ago. Hopefully it gets the Episode 3 treatment
They hired more people, seemingly to work on it, like double fine's Brad Muir. TBH I'm sure Artifact will have the Valve "feel". Jeep Barnett, one of the main people behind Portal, left working on VR to work on it, seems to be popular internally. Gray said his brother is working on it.
do you guys remember your first experience with steam-esque platforms i was like 11-12 and i remember installing some launcher for korean games and i played this fuckin korean mecha game that had modern micro transactions in it and it was the best shit to be able to download games despite my like, 300kbps connection after steam basically peaking in terms of quality, that sense of wonder in terms of consuming videogames has just never really been the same for me edit: (video embed) this was the first downloadable game i ever played, and i loved it just for the novelty that it was free, steam has absolutely ruined any sense of wonder i had like this as a kid
Exteel was the shit, and Fuck NCSoft for killing it. It was one of the best early examples of microtransactions - You could only buy mid tier shit with microtransactions so "coiners" couldn't just grab the best shit with daddy's paycheck and fuck your ass raw in every game because money. I've played Hawken and it's not nearly the same. No game I've played has been anything like it. Anyway, like the video said, there's no hope for great single player games from Valve anymore, and I know several people holding onto hope that just need to let go. Technically they could, yeah, but I absolutely guarantee you won't see so much as a release year for one any time soon. The writers probably didn't leave for no reason.
The valve community seems to have made the exact same video 20 times, that takes talent.
At least the community actually makes stuff.

It was announced like six months ago.

The genre is full of a lot of trash and complacency like in the case of hearthstone and it'd be great for things to be shaken up. Especially because Valve described it as something quite different from the bog-standard.
huh? u just take a bunch of employees from Valve who work on steam and put them in a child company called Steam that is owned by Valve and guess what.. they work on Steam :) whilst the other employees at Valve work on games etc.. corporate restructuring of Valve is something that is so greatly needed I have no idea why it's not happening
But what if all the Steam devs want to work on something else before the split happens and the Steam division has no people. The reason restructuring isn't happening is because a select few employees control the hiring and firing process, so they'll fire any dev who wants to upset their infinite money system.

i loved the way he used those little source engine sound effects throughout the video and honestly the fact that those tiny little sound blips could inspire so much nostalgia really demonstrates how influential and important those classic valve games (as well as gmod) are to me
I'm just bitter about the state of TF2. No matter how hard I try I can't seem to leave that game. But it is in shambles.
this guy is so good. lost my shit at the "molotov my brother, revive, just to do it again" line - brings up so many great memories of l4d. I know it's meme-tacular but I do miss valve. I ate up all the TF2 videos on release - used to have them on my ipod [~before they were touch screens~] and just eat up everything they put out. it is of course a mix of getting older and nostalgia, but damn man. some good times
What if Valve releases Artifact and it actually blows everyone's mind and changes the CCG game? What if all this time since their last game they've secretly been putting all their eggs in the Artifact basket and it totally pays off? I could only imagine the butthurt.

I could only imagine the butthurt.
Does seem like the want to shake up the genre based on how Day9 said it has three lanes with each lane being its own card game, he described it as Dota 2 in card game form. I hope it shows off Source 2 more and has the Valve "feel".
The valve community seems to have made the exact same video 20 times, that takes talent.
If only valve listened to peoples' complaints, then we would be free of this identical video menace
Artifact has been getting very positive reviews recently, I think it might actually not be shit.
Honestly, if you're a card game player, artifact is going to be huge no matter what they do because it could integration with steam trading cards and it's based on DOTA. They could release a steaming mess of a card game but due to those two factors, it'll undoubtedly make them money hand over fist, I guarantee you. I watch a few streamers for card games sometimes and everyone who plays Hearthstone, Gwent or Elder Scrolls are all going "man we hope we can switch over to artifact" etc etc.
Reset the clock guys! Next we'll get a video about how Fallout 4 isn't a real Fallout game!
At least the community actually makes stuff.
Agreed. There’s a new Half-Life 2 mod coming out tomorrow and it looks very promising.
