As some of you may know, SomethingAwful has it's own space program.
It's time for us to start our own.
High-altitude ballooning is a cheap method of sending relatively light items to near space. The whole project would cost around 200 dollars.
Most, if not all items needed can be bought online.
Some photos taken from this kind of balloons:

Take a dump in space?
I'm in
I've always wondered how they recover these things. Yeah they have GPS systems and whatnot but it doesn't do much good if they land half way across the country or in the middle of the ocean or something. Or do they transmit the video signal from the balloon to a computer on the ground?

They transmit pictures using an onboard radio transmitter, while the video is stored in a USB key as far as I know.
Check the photo of the shit it needs, it has a cellular antenna so I s'pose it sends the video signal to a host.
I will contribute to Facepunch's space expedition by throwing a pebble as high as i can in the hopes that it will break from the earth's gravitational pull and become Lord of the space pebbles.
Wait how does it pass the ozone layer?

Wouldn't you hit the skybox before you would get into space?
i think that's fucking awesome. we should so do this.
I think it's a good sign of progress when a rag-tag group of nerds can start up their own space-program. :unsmith:

Haha, the ending. Balloon pops and the chair breaks to pieces as it falls down.
How much does it cost to get something like that up to space?
And if we do it, people who donate should be on a printed list that the camera can see.
We should tie balloons to dildos with faces drawn on them and wait for news of "RECOVERED ALIEN TECHNOLOGY"
super balloons

I remember reading how they actually sent a plywood chair for their commercial
Easiest way to space = rocket dart
Tell me, sir Wewt? How do they pass the Ozone layer then?
The Ozone layer doesn't mean what you think it means
Wow, just what our astronauts need, more trash in space that could run into them and kill them.

I hope you know how hard it is to put something in orbit. And actually keep it in orbit.

they fit a small spike made of titanium on top especially designed to penetrate the ozone layer

He probably thinks it's like in Spaceballs.

Space is pretty big, you know.

There's like 10 billion tons of metal shit flying around in earth orbit, the chunks bigger than a nut being watched.
Would be really funny if the astronauts crashed and burned againist a balloon filled with black market electronics and dildos though.

You know that this is not in orbit nor is it near the height of a LEO
