• Trump loses his big bet on Alabama U.S. Senate race
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In backing Roy Moore in Alabama’s U.S. Senate race even though the candidate faced allegations of sexual misconduct with teenage girls, President Donald Trump made a risky bet - and lost big. The victory by Democrat Doug Jones over the Republican Moore in the Alabama special election on Tuesday was a catastrophe for Trump, portending a Democratic wave next year that could cost Republicans control of one or both houses of Congress. The stakes in Alabama were that high. Democrats already were confident they had a strong chance to retake the U.S. House of Representatives in next year’s congressional elections. Jones’ narrow victory increases their once-long odds of retaking control of the Senate as well. If Democrats were to recapture both chambers, they would serve as a check on Trump’s agenda and might even initiate impeachment proceedings against him. “That Republicans lost in one of the most Republican states in the nation is a wake-up call no matter how flawed their candidate was,” said Jesse Ferguson, a Democratic strategist and former aide to Democrat Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign. Democrats never expected to have a chance in Alabama, where they had not won a U.S. Senate race in 25 years. But the combination of Trump’s unpopularity, the sexual misconduct allegations that erupted against Moore in November, and Trump’s enthusiastic support of him anyway gave them the opportunity, experts said. “Trump was the one who got Jones within firing range, and Moore allowed Jones to win,” said Kyle Kondik, a political analyst at the University of Virginia. Even as Democrats lost several special congressional elections this year, they consistently showed higher levels of turnout and engagement, which is attributable to Trump, Kondik said.
Reuters.
The whole GOP gambled and lost, really. And what's left is them on the record supporting a pedophile. In general they've really fucked themselves over. Yes, they got the presidency and basically everything else. But the shit they did to obtain that power and the shit they've done and tried to do with it and the people they've backed have destroyed their reputation. And fuelled the passions of every single person with even a modicum of decency to fight against them. The way they've gone about things, they have a lot of power, but it is so burningly temporary. They've ensured that.
Hopefully the DNC will actually make use of this victory and try to gain some traction in other places, and not just do their same old bullshit.
just when you think he can't get any fucking dumber

The sensible people are already sickened by it, but we've reached a point where a candidate was on the record for advocating sexual assault, and won, and even though it was less people who voted for him, it was very close. And apparently this race was close, too. Republican citizens truly believe that democrat policies will ruin their livelyhood, somehow, and would easily say "nah, that's made up, he's no pedo. Besides, he wouldn't ruin America." We've been saying "surely, the public is disgusted with the GOP, now!" ever since Romney's "binders full of women" thing came out. It only got more polarizing, with the left saying being the disgusted ones, and republican citizens either saying "nope, it's bullshit," or "nope, not as important." The horrifying thing isn't that people like Trump and Moore are around, but the thousands of people looking at them and saying "they seem like good leaders." The GOP's reputation isn't ruined, because people are sick enough to like it.

big, BIG reminder that doug jones won because he went out and put some damn good effort into campaigning with his voters

In fucking Alabama, the asshole of the United States. What does that prove? That there just may be enough voters who have enough basic human decency to recognize that today's GOP isn't the GOP they once loved, and even a Democrat may be a lesser evil.
Well, this is a pleasant surprise. I was not expecting Jones to win

Just remember this is only a small foothill, the Republicans are going to be even more dogmatic now than usual, it will be a battle every second of this administration from here on out. Never give up this momentum, this is the moment we need to be our strongest.
Of all the hills the Republican Party chose to die on, they picked the one littered with child sex abusers. Incredible.

It's too calm and reasonable. I bet he was throwing a fit at that time and someone on his team had to tweet nice things before he could collect himself enough to spew more idiot rage.

First one definitely smells of PR agent.
