Just ten years ago, the thought of carrying your entire music collection around in a pocket would have sounded like the ramblings of a madman. But the spectacular rise of the iPod has seen the MP3 become the 21st century's most powerful audio format, a situation which looks set to continue with the latest news emerging from France, where industry heavyweights are currently meeting for the annual Midem conference. It is here that MusicDNA has been unveiled by some of the same people who, back in the ‘90s, pioneered the technology that now owns the music landscape. The super-powered, next generation format can include lyrics, videos, artwork and blog posts, alongside the actual recordings, and be continually updated. With a full launch expected this summer, it promises to revolutionise the industry once again, introducing a whole wave of interactive content for fans and giving labels, bands and marketing teams even greater scope for promotion and commercial gain, albeit at greater expense. MusicDNA has been created by Norwegian developer Dagfinn Bach who, alongside German investor Karlheinz Brandenburg, are credited as the key players in the emergence of the MP3. "I remember 10 years ago, a lot of people were saying that we need to enrich the user experience, that legal access to music has to give the customers more than just music, and this is certainly one very nice way to do it", explained Brandenburg at Midem. However, with only a handful of labels signed-up thus far, they are yet to convince the majors let alone take on iTunes, who will surely prove formidable opposition in the constantly evolving music industry.
MusicDNA is a shitty name, it needs to change before it'll catch on better. Somewhat of a nice idea, but not really that useful, to be honest. Lyrics can already be included in IDv3 tags, and I don't see the need to have some idiot's blog post show up when I'm listening to music. Also, I wonder what the encode quality is like? Is it still based on MP3 or some other existing codec? Or is there a completely new codec? If the latter is true, what's the quality like, and how long until current devices are compatible, if ever?
Unless there's anything revolutionary audio-wise this will just be a bloated MP3 version nobody needs since what most people do with their mp3s is listen to them instead of looking at fancy extra content that might contain all kinds of malicious shit.
whatttttttt
I'll stick with FLAC, thank you very much
It's not going to "kill" the MP3 seeing as it'll be more expensive, if the quality is as good as FLAC though i'll be interested.
I'm sure this will be just as much of a 'killer' as those phones which were hyped up to be 'iPhone killers'.
It's not going to "kill" the MP3 seeing as it'll be more expensive, if the quality is as good as FLAC though i'll be interested.
Meh, V0 MP3 is good enough, I bet less than 0.05% of people would be able to tell the difference between V0 MP3 and FLAC/WAV in an A/B~>X test.
Better make a format that is as big as mp3, but as good as flac quality wise
If this means I have to change all the formatting of all my music, then fuck that, I'm staying with mp3, but chances are it won't go anywhere in the first place.
Better make a format that is as big as mp3, but as good as flac quality wise
That's not really possible unless you use some sort of crazy fractal based encoding, and from that have the ability to reconstruct it iteratively, rather than just messing with the data and playing it back mostly as is.
I was thinking wow, maybe they made a much higher quality sound file for roughly the same space as an MP3. But no. Instead you're just telling me there are online connected MP3s that are going to be loaded with shitty blog posts.
Mp3's going to be around for a bit, No one is acutally looking into a new commerical way. Preferebly something like FLAC
My iPhone has album art, lyrics, and the song on it, so how is this any different?
Invent a better lossless compression algorithm for music files and then we'll talk. Otherwise, FLAC is revolutionary enough for me.
I'll stick with mp3 thanks.
My iPhone has album art, lyrics, and the song on it, so how is this any different?
It will cost thousands and it sounds gay thats the difference.
Doesn't bring anything new. I don't need even more media to consume all the time.
Stop making "mp3" devices make porn devices.
I'm not going to download something that requires internet connectivity because if my internet goes down (which it often does) then I won't be able to play it.
lyrics, videos, artwork and blog posts
Lyrics I can see being useful. Videos? I can just download the video; it has sound. You can already embed artwork in mp3 files; my Walkman displays album artwork. And blog posts? Why the fuck do I want to read blog posts when I'm listening to music?
AAC was supposed to be the MP3 killer. Didn't really happen. And now FLAC. Why bother with MusicDNA?
Meh, V0 MP3 is good enough, I bet less than 0.05% of people would be able to tell the difference between V0 MP3 and FLAC/WAV in an A/B~>X test.
Wha-at? I assume that means MP3 is not doomed?
Now it would be interesting if they made MP3's that contained the tracks for all the separate instruments. I don't know why that would be better, exactly, but it would be interesting, especially if you could change the volume levels of each instrument.
Mp3 is catchy. MusicDNA is just fucking stupid.
Why don't people use Vorbis or MPC anymore? They're fucking amazing for most applications.
Ogg Vorbis is excellent.
Wait what if the musician on the blog posts CP? Does that mean that everyone who has their song will get CP downloaded into the audio file? :ohdear: [editline]08:05PM[/editline]
Now it would be interesting if they made MP3's that contained the tracks for all the separate instruments.
Mp3 is catchy. MusicDNA is just fucking stupid.
No dude wants to say "music" when he's talking bout his tunes. Plus, couldn't they just make something like an mp3+ which has higher quality and some additional file information buried in it to optionally download lyrics and what have you, not to have all that rubbish stuck in from the start
Can't wait hopefully it has the same compression size as mp3 around about 320kbps and wav sound quality it's time we moved on anyway, we've been using the mp3 format for well over 15 years now saying that though, we've been using wavs for over 25 years lol
I was expecting to read about a guy killing people and leaving clues behind in the form of mp3's or something.

This is nothing better than mp3 so far. All it has is some useless features totally unrelated to sound.
