Frontwire, the developer behind the upcoming Star Wars Battlefront III remake, Galaxy in Turmoil, has announced that Valve has agreed to host the game on Steam. This is a big change, as Frontwire had previously told its fans it might not be possible (on Steam proper or Steam Greenlight) due to its use of the Star Wars IP. But there was a breakthrough recently.
"It is with great pleasure that as of today I am able to officially announce that Frontwire Studios has officially signed a distribution deal with Steam/Valve for the game Galaxy in Turmoil," Frontwire president Tony Fergie Romanelli said in a statement. "After ongoing discussion between Valve representatives and myself, Valve/Steam has agreed to ship Galaxy in Turmoil to its millions of users for FREE."
Despite what they think, I imagine Disney is going to come down hard on this.
good i am looking for more mp games
Please don't get eaten by Disney.
Please don't.
;_;
It's absolutely unlicensed, so don't expect any vehicle or unit to have the exact same appearance as in other Star Wars media.
If Steam / Valve has agreed to host it, I imagine they've already done talks with Disney

Final product PROBABLY won't have Star Wars stuff, soooo
That's what I'm saying.
The project was named STAR WARS: Galaxy in Turmoil only last month and is now reduced to simply "Galaxy in Turmoil"
Pretty sure that a lot of visual changes will be done within the next month.
All hey have released so far is the progress from April and May.

Eh, they probably only consulting the mod team about the possible legal issues.
Fact is, Valve liked the project A LOT, that's why it will be released on Steam without going trough the Greenlight process.
How the hell has Disney not yet cited a C&D against this?
The mountains of Star Wars dollars are blocking their view.
I wish Imperial Assault never died for Arma 3
Even if its not technically star wars, a battlefront (as in real battlefront) styled game would definitely be nice
As long as its not actually using assets/names/likeness it'll be fine. But the fact they're putting it out for free tells me they probably haven't swapped anything out.
There's an abnormal amount of fan projects/remakes that get made by people who never think to just contact the rights owners asking for permission especially if it's free.

There's a somewhat similar game called Angels Fall First in Early Access, but that's pretty much it.
Incoming MWLL type lawsuit.
Doesn't matter if it's free if it eats sales of battlefield Star Wars.

It's totally using assets/names/likeness. Look at screenshots of the game.

If Battlefront's abysmal PC #'s are anything to to by it wont.

Wondering how they convinced valve to put it on steam then. Like they should know the risks involved.

possibly because they don't care
So are they essentially porting the game to Unreal engine and fixing what wasn't finished in BFIII? Campaign, voice files, MP etc?
Even if there's no star wars stuff in it, I'd still love to play it. Battlefront 1 and 2 have some of the most fun gameplay of any multiplayer shooter I know.
Even if they remove all Star Wars references and release it we'll only have to wait a month or so for someone to mod all the skins back in.

It sounds very much like they intend to switch those assets out for generic spacey ones. Disney doesn't hold copyright for white armor or lightswords
At this point the very least they could do is turn it into it's own unique franchise. :boxhide:

MWLL had an actual nonprofit license from microsoft for the IP and didn't get sued, rather some of the MWLL devs were transparently pressured to shut down by PGI because some ex-team member's jobs at crytek were at stake. Quite a bit shadier than a lawsuit and PGI are douchenozzles.
It looks like they ported Battlefront 2 to unreal. It's already better than the new battlefront game in that regard.
on another note:
Person :
How are you guys getting past all the copyright assets and sounds? You know just recreating them yourself does not get you around copyright characters and sound effects.
President of Frontwire studios:
1) We're not doing this just for media attention. We started as a group of Star Wars fans that wanted to resurrect the BF3 that we wanted all along.
2) According to our lawyers we are 100% compliant with all US copyright laws. There are 4 fair use defenses that one can use. We fall under 3 of the 4 defenses. We're also considered a Parody. It's not any different than how Weird Al and/or Saturday Night Live are able to use the Star Wars IP to make money.
3) We're 100% free, which helps us in our defense against copyright infringement
4) Since Disney took over LucasArts they have sent out a total of 0 Cease & Desist letters. This includes fan films that have made hundreds of thousands of dollars. Most notably, the Darth Maul film that made a ton of money off of the advertisements on YouTube.
5) Final note. From the mouses mouth: "We do not claim ownership to your User Generated Content; however, you grant us a non-exclusive, sublicensable, irrevocable and royalty-free worldwide license under all copyrights, trademarks, patents, trade secrets, privacy and publicity rights and other intellectual property rights to use, reproduce, transmit, print, publish, publicly display, exhibit, distribute, redistribute, copy, index, comment on, modify, adapt, translate, create derivative works based upon, publicly perform, make available and otherwise exploit such User Generated Content, in whole or in part, in all media formats and channels now known or hereafter devised.."
In theory, we're free to do as we please as long as we do not claim to own the right to the IP, which we don't.

A well-made Star Wars mil-sim is probably the one game I would pay just about anything for.
This thing looks so much still in WIP that I'm wondering why they're going all out with this signing deals with Steam and whatnot with all the time remaining for them to get shut up for their efforts.

Wasn't it IPG the publisher pressuring them?

I think they're pretty much counting on it.
Same thing happened with a DBZ mod for Quake III ages ago, Funimation sent them a C&D so they changed all the assets to original characters but then all the DBZ content mysteriously 'leaked' for people to replace the new stuff with.
so what's stopping EA instead from finding some means to hunt this game down considering it's pretty much advertising itself as "the real Battlefront 3" against their own product
