The Virtual Retina Display doesn’t actually have a screen but instead it projects images straight on to the retina using a complex series of LEDs and mirrors. Ed Tang, co-founder for Avegant, says that this is supposed to mimic how our eyes work, so giving a sharper and more realistic viewing experience.
Before anybody thinks so, this is not the same as the Oculus Rift. It's more of a home-theater all-in-one headset. Kickstarter if anybody wants to pitch in.
And soon Apple will sue them and take all the money because they used the word retina.
And soon Apple will sue them and take all the money because they used the word retina.
Nah, I think those curves will get them more riled up.
I'm really excited that there's a market soon to be booming with VR stuff. How did the saying go? "Born too late to explore the earth, Born too soon to explore the galaxy but damn, you were born just in time to fuck your waifu"
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but isn't that bad for your eyes?
Flip it around and you've got eyes on the back of your head
I think that most virtual display headgear I've seen so far look really goofy to wear, especially around other people. I wouldn't mind wearing this, it just looks like a pair of headphones turned 90 degrees. Although it would just be by myself or with friends, probably not around people I don't know.
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but isn't that bad for your eyes?
That would mean that using your eyes is bad for your eyes, it's literally just projecting light onto your retinas, that's how you see.
finally I can be geordi la forge
That would mean that using your eyes is bad for your eyes, it's literally just projecting light onto your retinas, that's how you see.
Yes but wouldnt that be the equivalent of staring at a phone screen or a light bulb?
They don't even call it retina but retinal.
This is really cool I could use it easily with keyboard and mouse for games :)
If it projects directly into the retina, does that mean one has to keep their eyes completely still and straight forward, or is there some sort of tracking? Since I have nystagmus, the only way I can keep my eyes still is by scooping them out of my eye sockets and nailing them to the table.
gimmick
finally I can be geordi la forge
Oh god, I'd love a version of this that looks just like Geordi's visor

Basically through reflection of light rather than a screen- if your eyes move around, your vision of the screen will too.
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but isn't that bad for your eyes?
About as bad as headphones are for your ears.
i don't really get why people want this device, i mean the technology is incredible but it's just a display, it doesn't really seem like that great of a use for it.
The article doesn't say anything about head tracking or gyros, so is this basically just a wearable monitor?
Pretty much the main point of this being (besides the built in speakers) is a display that encompasses the whole vision range (~170 degrees) of the eyes. Sorta like a panorama screen to my understanding.
Personally, i think this is too gimmicky for me to invest in at the moment. I'll wait for it to innovate before i think about backing it.
i don't really get why people want this device, i mean the technology is incredible but it's just a display, it doesn't really seem like that great of a use for it.
It's the first step of many. Basically right now it's just a display that has the potential to make pictures look very, very real. But people know that by supporting this, they're going to get better VR in the future- Imagine something that uses retnal projection as well as perfect head tracking. Basically a near-perfect (visually) virtual reality. [editline]24th January 2014[/editline] But I'm not digging the only 45 degrees of view I'm going to wait to buy anything like this until the tech is more mainstream (and out of beta)
using a complex series of LEDs and mirrors.
You know what else did this? The virtual boy
[...] But I'm not digging the only 45 degrees of view I'm going to wait to buy anything like this until the tech is more mainstream (and out of beta)
I stand corrected, this device should be panoramic and then it'll be more innovative.
I stand corrected, this device should be panoramic and then it'll be more innovative.
Once it gets to full field of view I'm gonna snatch that shit up like nobody's business Though I do have to say that if you're looking through something that flat out blackens the area around your vision, you don't really notice it after wearing it for more than a few minutes.
[editline]24th January 2014[/editline] But I'm not digging the only 45 degrees of view I'm going to wait to buy anything like this until the tech is more mainstream (and out of beta)
It is already mainstream in the RC hobby. Though they are way more expensive than they need to be.
I dunno, only 720p resolution each eye. I don't think that'll look good enough when it's stretched across 170 degrees of your FoV. Sounds like the next version of the Oculus Rift would do this job better. [editline]o[/editline] Oh it's just 45 degrees. Shame on whoever said the number 170 :v: Well I guess it's a bit better then.
Oh god, I'd love a version of this that looks just like Geordi's visor
If they don't sell one, someone will customize one.
The display tech seems better than the OR tbh.
The article doesn't say anything about head tracking or gyros, so is this basically just a wearable monitor?
Watch the video, it supports motion tracking and works with games.
If it projects directly into the retina, does that mean one has to keep their eyes completely still and straight forward, or is there some sort of tracking?
...all light is projected directly into the retina.
I know, I meant in a sort of magnifying glass or laser focused sort of way, rather than splurging across the whole room as my monitor does.
