In the marina where Olympic sailors will launch their boats, a giant plume of sewage streams into the water.
Rio's waters were found to contain viruses up to 1.7 million more times hazardous than a beach in the U.S.
The problem is not just sewage. It's also trash, tons of it, floating in the bay. And some athletes say they're worried about running into it.[/quote]

Many spend their lives training for one chance at a truly prestigious sporting accomplishment, and it'd be no doubt one hell of an emotional blow to be told they can't compete, but they'd still have many many years of life ahead of them that swimming in a body of water more suitable for a Fallout game than an Olympic event would take from them.

Absolutely disgraceful. The Olympics should be canceled/moved and Brazil should be fined for wasting everybody's time.
Maybe the sludge will add an unnecessary element of challenge so it'll take forever to paddle through merda riacho.

Do they deserve better? Of course they do, the conditions in Rio are atrocious. But calling someone a sell out for not squandering their entire life's worth of training is stupid. For many athletes, this is the one and only chance they will get. I can understand why some would take the risk regardless.

they should have cancelled this when they chose it, the IOC has to do a huge inspection before choosing the city/country and making sure its fit for the games, and brazil has loads of time and the IOC has loads of time to pick a better city. now its too late, and for the athletes? now or never.

So either they didn't do the inspection or their inspection is fucking terrible. Either way they fucked up as much as Brazil did here.
