Man, I love The Mars Volta. And when I set out to find a place to discuss The Mars Volta, no thread answered my search queries. I'm sure some other of you cool kids are into TMV so I thought to make this. Who is The Mars Volta The Mars Volta is a Progressive-Rock band with influences in Jazz, Punk, Traditional Hispanic Music and other Prog-Rock sounds and cryptic and at times nonsensical lyrics. The two people you may know in the band are bassist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, who last year released seven albums, and vocalist Cedric Bixler-Zavala who, like Omar, were both in Post-Hardcore Punk band At the Drive-In. As of 2009 they have released five albums and have a sixth on the way. Why is part of the title in Spanish? Because there is a good amount of songs with Spanish segments and some songs are entirely in Spanish. Releases •Tremulant EP Tremulant is the first The Mars Volta release and the first EP. It has four songs on it that stylistically (and I think thematically) fit with De-Louse in the Comotorium. All songs on this are eventually put on the A Missing Chromosome B-Side •De-Loused in the Comatorium De-Louse in the Comotorium is the first full album from The Mars Volta. Its story is one of a man who attempts to kill himself with rat poisoning only to fail and to be put into a coma that he perceives as another world where he meets three Tremulants. He awakes from his coma, unfulfilled, ashamed and still suicidal. He kills himself by jumping off of a bridge. The story is partly inspired by a friend of the band's Julio Venegas. De-Loused is considered by many TMV's perfect album and is ranked quite high in many Best of 2000's lists. Has an accompanying book that you can read here. •Frances the Mute Frances the Mute was released two years after De-Loused in 2005. Like De-Loused, it too is a concept album based on real life events. Jeremy Ward, audio artist for The Mars Volta until his death, had previously worked as a repo man. One day, Ward discovered a diary in the backseat of a car he was repossessing, and began to note the similarities between his life and that of the author — most notably, that they had both been adopted. The diary told of the author's search for his biological parents, with the way being pointed by a collection of people, their names being the basis for each named track of Frances the Mute. Ward was in the process of completing it at the time of his death. Frances the Mute is one of TMV's most fiscally successful releases and is famous for it's 30 minute epic "Cassandra Gemini". •Amputechture Amputechture is the third studio album TMV has released. This one is less appreciated. For some reason it's a hard listen and people dismiss it and don't give it the multiple chances it needs. It's funny; Several times have I heard people say they hated this album, and then after the third or fourth time listening to it they couldn't get it out of their head. It's a lot BIGGER than the previous two albums, it's a lot more referential, it has a lot more Spanish in it and it isn't a concept album. However, it is still a great and amazing album that I'd suggest you listen to probably last as it is kind of... splitting. Also, due to fans' reaction to this album, The Mars Volta refers to Amputechture as their Autistic Child because the amount of love and care they put into it. •The Bedlam in Goliath The Bedlam in Goliath is TMV's fourth studio album and a return to concepts. On a trip to Jerusalem, guitarist Omar bought a Ouija Board that in short, caused a lot of bad shit to happen and what they believe release a malevolent spirit. I'll let you read the story here. This record has a really great atmosphere to it while being probably one of the easier and most "Hard Rock" of TMV's albums. It's my personal favorite because it feels dangerous and very chaotic and it has some pretty sweet ass jams on it too. WARNING: Heaaaaaaaaavy use of dual vocal tracks; One high and one low. •Octahedron Octahedron is TMV's fifth and most recent release. This is probably the most approachable album. It's pop-ish and fairly short. Nothing on here is heavy Prog-Rock. Great vocals and really nice songs, but I honestly don't think it is as impressive as any of their other albums. •Noctourniquet Announced on June 17th 2012 and set to release on March 27th 2012 the new TMV album Noctourniquet. The most the band has said about this album is this quote from Cedric "“Sorry no spanish [sic] on this record, no Zeppelinesque voyages, no Santana like flourishes or vishnu accuasations [sic]. No congas, no Hammond organ stabs, no 30 minute songs, no drums that sounds like mosquitos buzzing in your ear. Just future punk. That’s the only way to describe it from my point of view.”" Out on March 27th. Tracklist: 1. The Whip Hand 2. Aegis 3. Dyslexicon 4. Empty Vessels Make The Loudest Sound 5. The Malkin Jewel 6. Lapochka 7. In Absentia 8. Imago 9. Molochwalker 10. Trinkets Pale Of Moon 11. Velamalady 12. Noctourniquet 13. Zed And Two Naughts Tour Dates They're unfortunately just finishing a tour with only a few more dates left taking place in Hong Kong and Australia.
I've listened to their first 2 albums and, while I really, really enjoy the first, I find the second very boring.
hah, best modern prog band there is. i have no clue why the kiddies down at the progressive rock thread weren't freaking out about noctourniquet at all uh julio (calling our protagonist's conscious counterpart this just because, not his tremula metacarpi/comatorium name cerpin) ~is~ the three tremulants (assuming you mean cerpin, moatilliata, and clavietika?) or am i missing something completely related to the story, more namely happenings around son et lumiere/inertiatic esp/house of tremula metacarpi? or am i just being dumb also you spelt comatorium wrong. (e: lmao and de-loused) btw put this in the op http://tmvfr.info/miscfiles/DeLoused_storybook.pdf you should also state that nearly every track in bedlam is a different-reality representation of a love triangle including a mother, her daughter, and a muslim
Going to get some of these guys records before the new album is out.
Going to get some of these guys records before the new album is out.
if you want something that stays traditional to modern prog's ideas mainly then go frances but if you want a hard-to-dissect concept album about dog-hand-doctors, wasp monsters, and cannibals, then go de-loused if you want something to relate to
hah, best modern prog band there is. i have no clue why the kiddies down at the progressive rock thread weren't freaking out about noctourniquet at all
please, they were understandably preoccupied serving their daily offerings to the supreme god of music, steve wilson

I'll link to the book though.
I've listened to their first 2 albums and, while I really, really enjoy the first, I find the second very boring.
Frances is my favorite actually, it takes a couple listens but eventually the songs/parts that seem boring and insignificant at first become some of the best parts of the album (Miranda That Ghost Just Isn't Holy Anymore especially, I love that song but at first it flew right over my he ad). Fantastic album. I like De-Loused almost as much but it just feels like a bridge between ATDI and TMV (which isn't a bad thing but it just feels a bit incomplete). I couldn't get into Amputecture or Octahedron but I like a bunch of songs on Bedlam. I'm hearing good things about Nocturniquet so I'm excited to listen. [editline]4th March 2012[/editline] Actually just listened to Frances, still as great as when I first heard it, better even.
Going to get some of these guys records before the new album is out.
De-Loused and Octahedron are the most approachable of their discography, but a lot of people find Octahedron to suffer in the quality department. Frances the Mute is really a great example of The Mars Volta's skill with concepts, interludes, imagery and ambition. Amputechture is probably their most unapproachable album along with The Bedlam in Goliath as it is really a pretty harsh album. I'd recommend De-Loused or Frances for your first time, move onto Amputechture then Bedlam and finish it off with Octahedron.
Really? I think Bedlam is infinitely more accessible than Amputecture. Other than that I agree with pretty much everything.
i like omar's guitar work. other than that it gets way too prog=
Really? I think Bedlam is infinitely more accessible than Amputecture. Other than that I agree with pretty much everything.
It's just that, I think coming off of De-Loused and Frances you do not expect "NEVER HEARD A MAN SPEAK LIKE THIS MAN BEFORE. ALL THE DAYS OF MY LIFE EVER SINCE I'VE BEEN BORN. NEVER HEARD A MAN SPEAK LIKE THIS MAAN BEFORE WATCH ME NOW" and I think Amputechture eases them into that.

Deloused and Frances are amazing, a nice point while going from ATDI to the latest of Omar's solo albums. And Octahedron. That said, I'm pretty pumped for Noctourniquet
i used to love these guys, the only tracks i can actually remember were Televators and Goliath but they were really great it's p cool that they're still making music and aren't just one of those one-off "indie prog bands" that fade out after a few tracks. thanks for posting, it's great to rediscover them. [editline]5th March 2012[/editline] lmao
Listening to Day of the Baphomets right now. DAT BASS INTRO.
Noctourniquet is great. I like it better than Bedlam and Octahedron, possibly even Amputechture too. But Deloused and Frances are still my 2 favourites.
Listening to Day of the Baphomets right now. DAT BASS INTRO.
IIIIIIIII-I-I-I GOTTA PRAYER THAT'LL MAKE YOU THEIRS NOW (E: noctourniquet stands above bedlam on my part, not sure about amputechture or octahedron)
I used to be a huge fan of TMV, but I'm not as high on them as I used to be. I still give them a listen every now and then, but it's just not the same. My favorite album is either Bedlam or Frances. I haven't listened to Noctourniquet yet but I have high hopes for it. However, I listen to Omar's solo stuff quite often, particularly Xenophanes. That album never gets old.
My favorite ORL albums are XENOPHANES, Cryptomnesia, Sepulcros De Miel and Un Escorpion Perfumado
My favorites are Xenophanes, Ciencia de los Inutiles, and Solar Gambling. Never listened to Cryptomnesia or Un Escorpion Perfumado, but I've been meaning to.
Cryptomnesia is basically another TMV album and that's why I love it so. Un Escorpion Perfumado is like a funky ORL album. It's pretty consistent and focused.
^I got them, I'll give them a listen soon. Okay, I'm listening to Noctourniquet as I write this. It's excellent, and I have a feeling it might actually wind up being my favorite TMV album. Empty Vessels Make The Loudest Sounds and The Malkin Jewel are my current favorites. Also, when Vedamalady came on I thought someone was playing Street Fighter for a few seconds. Tychozorente, Xenophanes, Solar Gambling, and Calibration are omar's best solo releases anyone here heard El Grupo?
Frances the Mute is a seriously perfect album, and I'm pretty much calling it that Noctourniquet's gonna be my album of the year.
Noctourniquet is my album of the year so far. I can't stop listening to Zed and Two Naughts.
Ouroboros is a song i just cant tire from
Ouroboros is a song i just cant tire from
My favorite song off of Bedlam has got to be Metatron. I listen to it every day and it's just as good as it was when I first listened to it, maybe even better.
My favorite song off of Bedlam has got to be Metatron. I listen to it every day and it's just as good as it was when I first listened to it, maybe even better.
Yeah, Goliaths also a good one too
Mighty nifty! Ships May 28th :\ [editline]10th March 2012[/editline] also, if you're a fan of TMV and haven't heard this album, do yourself a favor and listen to it.
