Made using hemp, cork, bio-cotton, certified biodegradable plastics, chlorine-free bleach and other nontoxic materials, the shoes are designed to completely break down when buried in the ground – the first batch will even come with seeds in their tongues, so that wildflowers will sprout up in commemoration of users' planted, expired kicks. OATS is the brainchild of Dutch entrepreneurs Christiaan Maats and Dirk-Jan Oudshoorn. "Our future lies in a reconciliation between industry and nature, between mankind and nature," they state on the company website. "We have to close the loop, come full circle and realize we're an integral part of the whole thing." Part of the duo's green philosophy includes manufacturing the shoes in Europe, to limit shipping-related carbon emissions. After a reported two years of research and development, the launch of their Virgin Collection of sneakers is now imminent. Although the shoes are not yet available to the public, they have already won second prize at last month's Green Fashion Awards in Amsterdam. The sneakers will initially be sold through the OATS webshop, with prices yet to be announced. So far, they will only be available to buyers within Europe.
Source: http://www.gizmag.com/compostable-sneakers-biodegrade-in-soil/17954/
I'd rather not be walking around in the rain and have my shoes start melting... :downs: After all, here in Michigan, our seasons are Winter, and Almost winter. Constant wetness.
The seed idea is actually pretty neat :buddy:
The seed idea is actually pretty neat :buddy:
Yeah, it's pretty cool. I kinda want to buy a pair just to get the seeds and plant them. :buddy:
Great idea.
That sounds like a nice idea, but building on what Superstormj said, how will these shoes fare in the long run? I can go three to five years without having to buy a new pair.
One second you're walking down the street, next second you're a fucking bush.
They already are. My friend wears her green sneakers all the time
They don't look bad either.
My girlfriend has flip-flops made out of recycled yoga mats that were made out of recycled plastic and rubber. We're fucking earth-friendly, bitch.
My feet are also biodegradable.
Does the quality of the shoe decrease or not? I want a real answer for that one.
Made of hemp? Running on hot tarmac just got loads more fun.
Walk into a puddle with shoes walk out without
Oh hush, there's plastic and cork in these things. And besides, Hemp pretty much tires out as quickly as the regular canvas shoes so there should be no worries about these shoes just degrading in front of your eyes. With your mindset, the entire forest must melt every time in rains.
i fouudn out the hard way that my shoes were bioldegreaable

What the hell is bio-cotton?
So, instead of throwing my shoes out now i can just go bury them in my shoe graveyard in the back garden?
What the hell is bio-cotton?
Apparently something that grows around the seeds of cotton plants and can be used to make fabrics.
I hate these, I would be scared of burying my shoes in my backgarden, they'd haunt me for the rest of my life. You know what they say, shoes have soles. :ohdear:
:rimshot:
What keeps your foot sweat from screwing up your shoes?
Seed in my shoe. One day it rains. next day I put on two small bushes and walk outside.
my shoes are bio degradable just set them on fire :v:
longing for that pricetag... won't be cheap that's for sure.
What keeps your foot sweat from screwing up your shoes?
perhaps they permeate the material with anti-bacteriological and fungicidal agents that break donw after a couple of years?
