• Humans and chimps share most of their genes, but humans more susceptible to cancer
IT'S not what you've got but how you use it. Humans and chimps may share most of their genes, but humans are far more susceptible to diseases like cancer. Factors that influence the way the genes are read could explain why. If an extra methyl group adorns a gene - an epigenetic change called DNA methylation - the gene can be less likely to be expressed. A research team including Genevieve Konopka at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas analysed samples from the prefrontal cortices of humans and chimps for levels of methylation. Their analysis showed that the human cortex tends to be much less methylated than those of chimps. Looking closer, they realised that the genes that were differently methylated included ones that have previously been linked to cognitive impairment and some cancers (American Journal of Human Genetics, doi.org/h7d). The study provides evidence that differences in methylation could be an important clue to human brain evolution, says Konopka.
http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg21528803.500-epigenetics-gives-clues-to-human-cancer-susceptibility.html I told my mum I wanted to be a monkey, and she wouldn't listen to me.
Besides our genetic disadvantage could it be that our lifestyle has anything to do with it
Maybe its because we live like twice aslong as them and are therefore exposed to more radiation during our lives.
The research isn't based off of cancer statistics.
clearly the key lies in bananas
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrPosTPSXxw
what i usually do whenever i need a quick anti-cancer aid
Well we're the most successful mammals on the planet, I guess we need some little flaw to even out the ol' genetic ballfield, eh? [sp]fuck chimps[/sp]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrPosTPSXxw
2% different. That's what we are.
clearly the key lies in bananas
Bananas are radioactive.
wait, first bacon causes cancer, then cell phones, and now being human? yep, everything causes cancer
damn dirty apes
From what I understand, cancer was never really much of a problem until we started making advances in the medical field. Usually, people would die off because of disease or something like that before cancer had a chance to get around to them. Probably if medicine for chimps was as developed as it is for humans, we would see something similar happen.
Bananas are radioactive.
Wild primates don't eat the modern banana because it doesn't grow in the wild. It was cultivated by humans.
Wild primates don't eat the modern banana because it doesn't grow in the wild. It's sorta a running joke, the radioactivity is barely measurable, it's more of ZOMG RADIATION ERRYWHERE
Besides our genetic disadvantage could it be that our lifestyle has anything to do with it
Fossils have showed our ancestors died of brain tumors quite frequently; so, no.
Besides our genetic disadvantage could it be that our lifestyle has anything to do with it
First thing I considered upon reading the article. Fascinating discovery regardless.
2% different. That's what we are.
Most of our DNA is junk DNA that doesn't do anything, so a 2% difference is actually huge.
