The twice-a-decade world's fair opens Friday for a six-month run in Milan amid early signs of diplomatic thaws. North Korea stepped out of its isolation as a last-minute participant, and Turkey may use the occasion to reach out to the Vatican after a recent spat.

The fair is also expected to be a lightning rod for anti-globalization protesters, with authorities warning that the infiltration of anarchists could spark violence outside the fair grounds.
I wasn't aware that they were still doing Worlds Fairs. I thought they fizzed out in the 90's. Hell, North America has not seen one since Expo 86.
I've visited a World Fair. Was in Shanghai. I went to the North Korean building. Bought North Korean spring water for a whopping 2 USD. Stared at North Koreans while they talked to themselves in a circle. And looked at awesome North Korean propaganda, like how great their education is.
That was seriously the peak of the whole visit.

My mom was at Expo 86, she told me about one night when the gates closed and they wouldn't let anyone in, some dudes picked up my mom and her friends and threw them all over the entry gates :v:
at first i thought they chose the food theme in a humanitarian spirit, maybe because the UN Food and Agriculture Organization is based in Italy, but it turns out it's just a massive beauty pageant for national megacorporations just like every expo
the city has been a fucking mess since the very early afternoon because of those fucking savages

I only know Expo 86 as why Vancouver even has rapid transit lol
We got a new Skytrain line when the Olympics happened here too
My aunt worked for World's Fair 1982, and it left us a pretty kickass observation tower.
Milan citizen here.
It's been a mess, these fucking idiots have used a protest to destroy a bunch of shit. I wanted to hang out with my girlfriend but the public transport on the surface was totally blocked and the tube skipped some stops, and cops were everywhere. I was forced to return home as I couldn't get anywhere.
Now imagine if somebody needed to get to a hospital and couldn't.
Honestly i can't justify this kind of behaviour. But then again, most of those people actually doing damage are just a bunch of anarchists and black bloc.

They are, they just want to destroy stuff.
I am against Worlds Fairs but I'm not gonna throw bricks at cars or destroy cars.

Because apparently globalisation is a bad thing.

Many Italians agree that this World Fair was a waste of money and that's the thing we least need since our economy is already going down the shitter. It's kinda dumb if you ask me.

What about all the money going in to the tourism industry though?
What about all the money going in to the tourism industry though?
Knowing this country, someone will pocket three quarters of all profits.
Howcome we don't build cool things for this anymore? Like the Eiffel Tower or the New York State Pavilion?
Because money and commitment. At least most of our pavilions got recycled into new buildings.

Because corrupted people get all the funding and the Expo isn't even finished. I'd rather my country not make that impression once more
