A Brazilian construction worker has survived after a 2m (six-foot) steel rod fell from above and pierced his head, doctors who treated him say.
Eduardo Leite was taken to a Rio de Janeiro hospital, where the rod was removed after five hours of surgery.
The doctors said he responded well to surgery, suffered no adverse consequences and has experienced little pain.
He narrowly escaped partial paralysis and loss of an eye, they added.
The rod is said to have fallen from the fifth floor of a building under construction.
It pierced Mr Leite's hard hat, then the back of his skull, before exiting between his eyes.
Luis Alexandre Essinger, chief of staff at the Miguel Couto hospital, said Mr Leite was conscious when he arrived there and explained what had happened to him.
"He was taken to the operating room, his skull was opened, they examined the brain and the surgeon decided to pull the metal bar out from the front in the same direction it entered the brain," he said.
Mr Leite had "few complaints" after the surgery, Mr Essinger added, saying "it really was a miracle" that he survived.
Neurosurgeon Ruy Monteiro told local TV that the bar had entered a part of the brain with no specific major known function.
The victim is expected to stay in hospital for another two weeks, and will be given antibiotics to avoid risk of infection.
I'm suprised he is still alive, I wonder if he's not going to be mentally handicapped because of this.

I remember a railway worker somewhere 18th/19th century getting the same. Accident with dynamite, small metal rod got blasted through his brains. He survived but turned into a humongous asshole of a drunk.

Complications can always happen later on after the surgery, so you never know if he has lost some of his memory or not.

Maybe he'll forget he has a hole in his head?

Except it made him an insufferable cunt.
i've always wanted a hole in my head
Well, it's a great conversation-starter!
"Guess where I got these scars from?"
orly
I don't get how you can say orly to that.
'has experienced little pain' means that he has experienced a very low amount of pain. I really don't understand you.
"Guess where I got this gaping hole in my face from?"
He needed this accident to happen like he needed another hole in his head.
Except it made him an insufferable cunt.
Man, I know alot of people with metal rods in their heads.

No you see the joke is that you would usually expect to experience a large amount of pain when a steel rod has pierced your head.
Now is the part where you laugh. Ha ha.

First thing I thought of too.
orly
The brain can block-out the pain if it has to.
Or the rod damaged the part of the brain that processes pain.
Its strange how the human body can be so durable but fragile at the same time.
As long as the Medulla Oblongata remains relatively intact, the brain can sustain quite heavy injuries. The problem with head injuries is the fact that the shockwave from whatever impacted the head travels through the brain, rupturing bloodvessels and causes grievous hematoma. People have taken knives to the head before and been fine, one guy tried to kill himself using a nailgun and got to about 20 nails before he gave up. People have survived shotgun blasts to the head. Obviously, surviving gunshot wounds to the head isn't as likely as surviving things that stay in one piece and don't bounce around inside the brain, but it is possible.

Turns out the prefrontal lobes are sort of important... :v:
The OP only has the 3D xray image, here's the real thing:

The metal pole was removed and he's responding well according to the post on LiveLeak: http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=6d3_1345249111
judging by where it pierced he's probably going to have some problems with talking, but not much else
Well, those Brazil nuts are pretty hard to crack.
