DirectX 12 introduces the next version of Direct3D, the graphics API at the heart of DirectX. Direct3D is one of the most critical pieces of a game or game engine, and we’ve redesigned it to be faster and more efficient than ever before. Direct3D 12 enables richer scenes, more objects, and full utilization of modern GPU hardware. And it isn’t just for high-end gaming PCs either – Direct3D 12 works across all the Microsoft devices you care about. From phones and tablets, to laptops and desktops, and, of course, Xbox One, Direct3D 12 is the API you’ve been waiting for.
Probably most important piece of info
Q: Should I wait to buy a new PC or GPU?
A: No – if you buy a PC with supported graphics hardware (over 80% of gamer PCs currently being sold), you’ll be able to enjoy all the power of DirectX 12 games as soon as they are available.
I have a bad feeling that "currently being sold" is a euphemism for "your desktop is a few years old? better go buy one of those shiny new ones that are currently being sold"
if it's anything like dx 10 and 11 there isn't a huge aesthetic difference or it won't be used to its full extent in games

Currently being sold means currently being sold. If your desktop is a few years old it probably isn't currently being sold.
if it's anything like dx 10 and 11 there isn't a huge aesthetic difference
Well if it indeed can shave off 50% of CPU overhead you will be able to rack up that FSAA and other things without and end up with the same framerate.

Yeah isn't that exactly what the diagram shows? Lower overhead with better load balancing?
if it's anything like dx 10 and 11 there isn't a huge aesthetic difference or it won't be used to its full extent in games
just looks like a big performance update, it doesn't seem to add any major features. that's probably why it's able to run on existing GPUs.

Well, that's what "currently being sold" means?
For Nvidia we're talking anything from GTX 400 series or later (with a few exceptions), which is stuff from early 2010. That's four years, you really can't expect anything more.
if it's anything like dx 10 and 11 there isn't a huge aesthetic difference or it won't be used to its full extent in games
DX9->DX10 wasn't so much about aesthetic differences as it was about a complete API redesign that actually matched how modern GPUs worked and made it much nicer to work with on the programming side. I believe 10->11 has also had some performance improvements.
Sure, these updates do add features, but these days most of the features you could add are already there, so D3D updates generally have been focused on increasing performance and making the API nicer to use.

API's are not about graphics, they are about performance. DX12 will give low to metal like performance to PC games
Do I have to upgrade from Windows 7 to 8 to use it or no?
Do I have to upgrade from Windows 7 to 8 to use it or no?
No word on what version of windows is required yet, possibilities to work on 7
God I hope they make it an update on 7, Seriously if 9 isn't 7 improved in almost every way I eat my shorts.

Is this going to become a Toxx
Tradition dictates Microsoft's every other operating system is good. Xp was good. Vista was bad. 7 was good. 8 was bad. We shouldn't be too worried about 9 being an improvement.
Still don't get the tick-tock scheme at windows releases. It's mainly a personal thing, for me everything was fine, felt like an improvement, XP being the worst one actually. Was happy with my Windows ME, not even kidding.

Windows 8.1 is not bad. Infact Windows 8.1 + Start 8= a super fast even more stable Windows 7.

I feel like people repeat this for absolutely no reason than because they think it's clever when it's absolutely stupid and subjective anyway

are you talking about windows or something
It'd be really nice if they didn't make it exclusive to Windows 9 or whatever.

I'm predicting a slippery slope of metro asshattery in the forthcoming windows releases.
I honestly don't mind 8. it's a solid operating system. But the redundancy of the metro interface and the annoying cursor scroll to activate the side windows is quite annoying to me.
I'd take windows 9 happily if they provide an option to disable that sort of unneeded mess.
Probably most important piece of info
Thats big news
I have to run gmod on DX9 with all minimum settings, and I still get 4-6 FPS :(
Fucking integrated nvidia from like 2006

I just set it up to start in desktop mode and I run Start8, sure, I shouldn't have to do that, but hey, it gives me all the advantages of windows 8 without that metro shit, although there are parts of metro I do enjoy.
Like the email alerts when you set up email, and things like that, those are things windows should have had ages ago
I'm assuming this is going to be Windows 8 only like Dx11.2, right? Cause it's a pain in the ass to install a new operating system.
make it available on windows 7 please

I think it's time to upgrade.
