New Zealand election: prime minister John Key's National Party wins third term
17 replies, posted
New Zealand’s National Party has been returned to government for a third term.
With most of the vote now counted, the party of prime minister John Key has a 48 per cent share, giving National about 62 seats – two more than it had before going to the polls this weekend.
Supporting minor parties would deliver another four seats giving National a clear majority.
Labour's vote meanwhile has fallen to 24 per cent. The Greens vote is down slightly.
One of the big winners has been Winston Peters and NZ First, while Kim Dotcom's Internet Party has failed to get into the next parliament.
Opposition leader David Cunliffe conceded defeat, admitting his centre-left Labour Party could not form a government.
"We will not be able to form a government," Mr Cunliffe told supporters.
"I have called John Key and congratulated him and acknowledged he will continue to be prime minister of New Zealand."
That right there.
Extremely disappointed.
four more years
Great day for my home country and another three years under a stable government. Hate national all you want, but your arguments and opinions are only valid when you provide some evidence to back it up. Obviously not everybody agrees with mass surveillance (even though mass surveilance does not happen in New Zealand as much as you want to believe the fat german), but regardless of government a level of surveillance would have been maintained as is the norm in this day and age so criticizing the national government for protecting the New Zealand people seems quite idiotic. There is a reason why people vote for national, and that is because the economy has grown since national has come into power and has given way to more wealth for many people. During the Labour government my immediate family were all first time home owners and were struggling to maintain their lifestyle while working modest jobs yet they were punished for working their way up over their lives to a high paying job by the government in the form of tax. Since national, my family own a number of homes each and all have shared ownership of a multi-million dollar construction company, and although they pay a bigger tax for their combined incomes they still manage to make some profit from their initial investment which is the goal for every business owner. I'm happy to have a discussion with anybody who wants to debate the ethics and the national government in general I'm very bored.

3 more years for Team Key!
EDIT: Please, don't vote me dumb if you're going to come here and criticize the national government without providing any information to back your stance.

I'm sorry but it's hard to refuse hard facts that under John Key:
- The govt illegally raided a NZ Citizen under the basis of US pressure and information which was later to be found unproven.
- John Key denied that the NSA had mass surveillance stations in New Zealand. Two days ago Snowden factually released information proving that the NSA, does indeed have stations in NZ, and performs mass surveillance.
- The National-led government ignored the Treasury and Reserve banks' (our government's finance management establishment) report on asset sales. And did it anyway. Not to mention it was so controversial that a citizen's referendum followed.
- Lets not forget National justice minister Judith Collins resigning right before the election due to corruption.
The National government has done OK. But it's not great. It's not even good.
We can do better than this as a country and I hope we do next election, by voting national out.

Our government can be bad, but it's nowhere near that drastic. Really.

Also Cunliffe was a bit of a wet fish to be honest. We need that Labour majority next election and the only way that's going to happen is if Labour gets its shit together.
Just some interesting stats, should be correct.
Lowest voter turnout in over 100 years, lower than the 2011 election.
Key has the overall support of around 32% of all eligible voters.
Wait so do the National party actually have a majority now?
Isn't that really rare for you guys?
New Zealand is in for some really rocky roads ahead with this National Government.

National Party have had a majority for their previous two terms and for the next three years (if I remember correctly)

they now have the majority of seats in parliament for the first time since MMP was implemented
I don't like liars and liars is what national is currently. Maybe I'm just incredibly closed minded about politics which is why I don't care but what I do care is the sake of other people in this country and the government currently under Key is OK. National has bad a really bad rep especially for the second term and the lies have been exposed.
normally our governments are formed under a coalition of one major party and one or more minor parties. its not rare, just uncommon, for a majority govt to occur.
lets just not let muldoon happen again and nz will be fine.
They predict that this election basically ensures the next election as well. But with the low voter turnout, any opposition can directly focus on Voter turnout which could possibly mean a landslide victory for the left side of politics in the next elections.

wat. um no, it was minority with act, maori, and unitedfuture

yeah the last majority was the Bolger led national govt in the early 1990s under FPP (first past the post). shortly after there was an electorial reform with MMP replacing FPP. and no majority under the MMP system until now.
