You'll see the battery is already swelling, and is about to pop the backplate off. He then hits it again, and tries to hit the battery even as it starts spewing it's contents.

To be fair, it's actually kind of interesting. I like how you can see that the battery isn't a solid brick, but rather a delicate pressurized pouch inside a thin plastic case.
