The Times Educational Supplement is reporting this morning that the Prime Minister is planning to send a King James Bible to every school in the country, complete with a foreword by Michael Gove, the Education Minister. Mr Gove is quoted as saying that the King James Bible was the most important book written in the English language. “It‘s a thing of beauty, and it‘s also an incredibly important historical artefact. It has helped shape and define the English language and is one of the keystones of our shared culture. And it is a work that has had international significance." The National Secular Society’s President, Terry Sanderson, is also quoted in the article, criticising the cost of such an exercise. While not doubting the significance of the King James Bible for the language and culture of Britain, Mr Sanderson made the point that schools are already awash with Bibles, with evangelical groups queuing up to hand them out to pupils. “It‘s not as if Bibles are in short supply in schools," Mr Sanderson said. “But if (Mr Gove) intends to go ahead with this, will he also please ensure that a copy of On the Origin of Species is sent out on Darwin Day. This book is much harder to find in schools and would be in line with his policy of promoting science and evidence-based education. I‘m sure that he could write an excellent foreword to this, too."
Source Can't find the original TES article since it's a magazine subscription. But, hey, who cares, right? I can testify to owning several copies of the Bible thanks to school assembly hand-outs - he's being ridiculous again.
That's.....stupid.
"will he also please ensure that a copy of On the Origin of Species is sent out on Darwin Day."
That's the spirit!
Doesn't bother me teaching them about Christianity (and besides, Christianity was probably a great influence on English culture over the years), but only if other creationism beliefs are taught as well.

Not very well, but they are. Besides, every library pretty much has a copy of King James, so it's not exactly a hard to find book.
Doesn't bother me teaching them about Christianity (and besides, Christianity was probably a great influence on English culture over the years), but only if other creationism beliefs are taught as well.
Creationism should not be taught alongside evolution because they are not equally valid concepts.
Creationism should not be taught alongside evolution because they are not equally valid concepts.
Dude get real, evolution never worked and never will. Stop being stupid. Once these potatos become tomatos, call me, alright?
It's the 400th anniversary of its translation and ones being sent to each school which will probably end up in the library. I don't see any problem here, it's not as though it's going to be used to teach students or something.
Isn't the King James Bible essentially the bible but with all the stuff that might turn people away cut out? How fitting.
Religion and state should be divided by a solid brick wall, You no-good posh toff, Really, I cannot comprehend you sometimes, Goddamnit.
[sp]I'm afraid to say more incase a black van appears and drags me off[/sp]
I don't see any problem here, it's not as though it's going to be used to teach students or something.
I wouldn't either - but it's government money being used.
I went to pick up a bible the other day to reread but there are so many editions and edits that I got kind of confused. Oh well, the bible was edited by the Roman Catholic Church before the Jews had even finished writing the first testament so its all pretty much bollocks anyway. It does not surprise me a conservative is trying to do something religious, but we have better things to spend money on than giving schools bibles, I don't want our future economic leaders filled to the brim with bible crap and believing their gambles might be an act of God.
They are. Not very well, but they are. Besides, every library pretty much has a copy of King James, so it's not exactly a hard to find book.
Well you can speak for yourself, we were constantly educated about Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, Jews etc etc - barely touching on Christianity in religious education classes. I think the only time we sat down and learned about it was at the beginning of secondary school and even then it was pretty faint.
all I hear is bible bashing, serously. let us christians be. evolution is bs anyway lol [editline]26th November 2011[/editline] praise satan [editline]26th November 2011[/editline] over 9000
I thought the UK was less involved with religion in schools? Hell I live in the Bible belt of the south in the US and I've never gotten a Bible or anything
Am I the only one who thought "Wait, the Titanic and Avatar guy?"
Am I the only one who thought "Wait, the Titanic and Avatar guy?"
Yeah no I was wondering why the hell he would be giving out bibles aswell.
wait so we're making uni students pay 9k tuition a year and then we're spending that extra money on bibles wat
I thought the UK was less involved with religion in schools? Hell I live in the Bible belt of the south in the US and I've never gotten a Bible or anything
The secondary school I go to has a compulsory religious education class - you get half a GCSE from it. The religions are not encouraged - but they are taught for the sake of teaching them. They've handed out pocket size bibles in the past, but practically everyone saw it as forcing a religion on them and got rid of them in some way or simply didn't use them - it was a Christian promotion group that was giving them out, and we were forced to sit through their talk. In the primary schools, they often made us sing songs in assemblies with heavy religious intonation, however nothing more was thought of it. Not sure if it's just my school, but almost all the schools I've heard of have done something like this at some point, and I'm fairly sure a religion class is compulsory across the UK, as well as a physical education class - all other subjects are not required to be taught by law.
Religious Studies is actually a pretty good class, it promotes tolerance of other religions and you get a GCSE at the end of it.
It isn't like religious studies is forcing you to go in to a religion or anything.
Isn't the King James Bible essentially the bible but with all the stuff that might turn people away cut out? My parents take me to church every Sunday and I hate it so much - fuck religion, what has it ever done for anyone? I called the priest a fucking cuntfuck paedophile last week, that told him.
Religious Studies is actually a pretty good class, it promotes tolerance of other religions and you get a GCSE at the end of it.
RE was effectively Brahman/Brahma? lives in everything. Instant A!
Religious Studies is actually a pretty good class, it promotes tolerance of other religions and you get a GCSE at the end of it.
We only learned Christianity in it at my school :v: Finished test in a third of the time, and got half an A* at GCSE bullshit spewing.
Why throw all this money on bibles, it's stupid and it's not like the UK is a particularly religious place anyway.
RE nowadays is more like PSE, racial harmony and cohabitation and all that shit.
Why throw all this money on bibles, it's stupid and it's not like the UK is a particularly religious place anyway.
It's probably the only nation that "doesn't give a crap about what you believe".
My RE class a year ago was the biggest waste of time ever, we didn't get a full GCSE out of it and all we were taught about was Christian values. Our teacher was a prat too, at one point he asked us who believed in god, people who said yes were allowed to go and the rest of us had to stay behind. Personally, I think RE should be optional after year 9 like languages, or even just as a occasional RE day or something.

I was given a bible at school once, I set fire to it This group just came in, preached for like an hour on how awesome Christianity was and then gave everyone bibles
