"On Friday, Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R) signed a bill that prohibits schools from disciplining students who play with simulated weapons, The Miami Herald reported.
Lawmakers approved the so-called "Pop-Tart" bill after an 8-year-old Maryland boy earned a suspension for biting a Pop-Tart into the shape of a gun last year.
The boy later received a lifetime membership to the National Rifle Association, which supported the legislation. State Sen. Greg Evers (R), who sponsored the legislation, said it would prevent situations "where you chew a Pop-Tart into the shape of a gun and you are expelled" from school, according to the Herald." This is great, but this shouldn't even be a problem to begin with.
common sense wins out over hysteria again.
remember, our children are our future, except little billy over there, he doodled something that looks like a gun so we should ruin his life
Fucking finally someone does something about this.
I'm sorry, but that pop tart looked almost nothing like a gun. It looked like a half-eaten pop tart (go figure).

That pop-tart looked like an AR-15 baby murdering bushmaster-15 shotgun to me.
This law shouldn't have to exist. School administration just needs to not be staffed by braindead morons.

The way the schools are now is just a result of the baby boomer soccer moms babying the shit out of our children. PTA boards give them far too much of a voice.
Hold anything the wrong way and someone could take it as a gun gesture. It's fucking dumb.

But, but zero tolerance
Who's going to make sure justice prevails?

No one is going to throw a fit if someone doesn't get expelled for pointing their finger like a gun and saying bang.
This is just school administration going on power trips or trying to get rid of children they don't like. Zero tolerance is just an excuse.

florida edu sucks
in elementary school (Kindergarden-6th grade in florida) i was told to take a sweatband with a character i liked on it off because "it could be used to represent a gang" And not to bring in a kids almanac i like reading because theres a naked greek statue in it.
i wouldnt be suprised if it was purely zero tolerance fueled.
Finally a blow against the "think of the children" crowd. Seriously, let kids have a childhood.
Think of the children, don't let the children think.
It's sad that this had to be passed, schools here are really fucking retarded regarding rules. Everything is a "Zero tolerance" policy. AKA "We are too lazy to find the real problems so lets just punish everything for everyone and not deal with it."

two weeks into kintergarten I was told to throw away my favorite hat because it was a new rule we weren't allowed to wear them, because they could be affiliated with gangs. It was a blank red hat, this kid's a blood!

That's nothing, we weren't allowed to use ball-point pens at school past 5th grade because 'you can stab somebody with them.' I suppose fountain pens aren't capable of that either?

Damn dude. You went from being a straight up G back in kindergarden - rolling with one of the baddest gangs, to a moderator on Face Punch Studios forums, what the hell happened?
Thank god for zero tolerance policies, huh?

It's a choice between you being the law and being in deep with the RL law. I'd take the first one.
I didn't expect this from Scott. I expected him to double down and put kids in jail for it.

Scott can do something good regarding education! Who would've known :v:
Scott has been doing pretty okay recently.
Wow Scott actually did something smart for once
How many children need to die in pop-tart shootings before this law is reinstated??
common sense wins out over hysteria again.
To be honest, this is hysteria fighting hysteria. If common sense was employed such a bill would never have had to exist in the first place.
I feel like Florida legislators might have had more pressing priorities than making sure kids can play with half-eaten poptarts.
This bill doesn't really hurt anyone because it's unlikely to ever affect anything or anyone, I just find it silly that a room full of state congressmen actually discussed this.

This is something Rick Scott can point to and say "look, I solve problems!" while not actually solving any problems that need to be solved.
I'm happy about this but Rick Scott is still a reptilian shape-shifter lookalike asshole
The fact that such a law needs to even exist shows how stupid some school bards are getting with these "zero-tolerance" policies.

It was one school in Maryland there is literally no "need" for this law.

If only there was one of those kids that stood up to shit like that and gave a "teen speech" like that one kid who spoke against his boring as fuck history teacher.
