Boy's computer desk explodes after using it near radiator

A 12-year-old boy had a lucky escape after a glass table close to his bed spontaneously exploded.
The table was near the boy's bed and next to a radiator which may have caused it to spontaneously shatter through a reaction known as 'thermal shock.'

Ikea agreed to pay the family £100 in compensation.

Why was it a glass table in the first place.
Another reason to keep my wooden table.
well its glass what did he expect? the heat gradient caused so much stress over the glass surface that it went boom

He probably didn't expect the table to explode, since thermal shock driven glass table explosions are probably a once in a life time occurrence.
Also because he's 12.

ikea should advertise that fact, it's not something most 12 year old boys think much of
Jesus christ. I never understood why you'd use a glass table for your computer, or even anything remotely valuable.
that aint a table thats two saw horses with a window on them

Our dining room table is made of glass and I'm constantly terrified it'll break from the weight of crap on it, and the weight of hot food on it.

Lets be honest, your average kid probably isn't going to expect his table to explode because of a bit of heat. He probably didn't realise how hot it was getting.
I used to have a glass desk, but the glass was like 2 inches thick and wasn't just sitting on stilts, plus it cost like $200. I always worried that it would crack and break sometimes, but now I have a firm wooden desk and my brother put his giant 50" TV on my old glass desk and it still holds up real nice.
Extremely glad that poor kid left the room right before it shattered. That would've DEFINITELY hurt him. All cut up, probably get glass in his face, maybe even manage to cut off a finger or two. Those are some big ass shards of glass.
Ahaha this is one of the reasons i dont buy glass tables. I also like a table i can sit on. Poor kid tho hes gonna have abit of mental scarring from this.

Look, even the picture is hiding from the explosion
glass used in desks isn't really weak at all. its pretty well suited for the purpose if not a little tacky looking
it is susceptible to heat warping and cracking, though. not that heat is usually so strong near a desk
I never trust glass tables...but I don't think anyone would've expected to have THAT happen.
It's safety glass. Even if he was sitting at it when it shattered it's designed to break into cubes and not pointy shards. Mind you, if safety glass EVER gets nicked or otherwise decides to crack it basically explodes into THOUSANDS of little cubes of glass.
Now mind you, the design of the desk was pretty awful. Too heavy a load and it bows and shatters.
Pretty sure it was the parents, not the kid, that bought and placed the table near the radiator so I don't know why we're all arguing about the kid.
Also this happened to my oven, the thing had a glass lid and one of the hinges was broken, so when it was open it must have slid into the hot iron bars and after a while it just shattered completely.
It didn't blow up like this table, it didn't send shards flying everywhere, it just shattered and splashed over the oven, probably because it was under less pressure, it was just a lid, not a table with computer hardware on top of it.
Warning: May not handle the power of next-gen graphics.
Glass tables are cool because they won't be set ablaze like a wooden desk will.
Speaking from experience here.
That "hackers can turn your computer into a bomb" comic would be appropriate now

Tables aren't meant for your ass to sit on
Something similar to my mums oven happened recently with the glass panel. It's something to do with the heat stretching and pulling the glass itself when the material has no room to stretch (being bolted down), this energy apparently causes the glass itself to one day just release all that tension quite violently.
This is down to poor glass being used from what I understand.
Man, I remember one time when I was little, I wanted something to drink so I picked up a glass and it just exploded in my hand.
My cousins saw it and they were like "DUUUDE, DID YOU JUST CRUSH THAT GLASS WITH YOUR HAND!?" :v:
one time i put an ice cube on the lightbulb in a lamp and it exploded
It wasnt the radiator it was his Nvidia card

I've done the same thing except it was just a wet tooth brush I wanted to dry. It didn't explode though, The top of the bulb just flew off like it was being propelled. It hit the ceiling and landed in the sink. It was cool.

Probably one of those cool kids that likes sitting on tables at school.

Can you further elaborate what happened? I'm curious.

Fixed.
saw "Boy's computer desk..." and instantly thought of 'exploded'
got excited at first but
