BLM inconveniences one of the three things people in MN look forward to every year
ST. PAUL, Minn. - Hundreds of Black Lives Matter supporters rallied Saturday morning in St. Paul before marching to protest outside of the Minnesota State Fair.
The march began around 11:45 a.m. at Hamline Park before making their way up Snelling Avenue towards the fair. St. Paul police shut down Snelling to northbound traffic and warned marchers to stay off of medians for their own safety.
Demonstrators stopped outside of the front gates, which were closed, and some fairgoers gathered on the other side to watch the protest.
these titles get confusing when your primary meaning for the acronym "BLM" is "Bureau of Land Management"
Is BLM the new Wbbc?

Every time I see it I wonder what the fuck the BLM has to do with mayors or protests. It's confusing as hell.
Thank god I didn't go today, traffic probably would've been even more hell than it already is near the state fair grounds.
Is BLM the new Wbbc?
Might as well be if they're protesting random shit like State Fairs.

Who the fuck thinks about Bureau of Land Management first and foremost when seeing the letters "BLM" :v:
Everytime I see BLM I think Bureau of Land Management.
Glad I won't be going this year.
Who the fuck thinks about Bureau of Land Management first and foremost when seeing the letters "BLM" :v:
That rancher from Married with Children and his militia buddies, probably.
Who the fuck thinks about Bureau of Land Management first and foremost when seeing the letters "BLM" :v:
The Bureau of Land Management was around way longer, so people think of that first.
i also think of the bureau of land management first because i think of the bundy blunder and how (darkly) hilarious it is that there was a literal standoff over illegal cows

Apparently at least three of us. I deal with the BLM a lot and live in a state that has a very large amount of BLM land on it, so my reasoning is evident.
Is BLM the new Wbbc?
No because BLM is actually rooted in legitimate issues and concerns about police corruption even if a few members might be nuts and WBBC is nuts through and through to the very core.

I have no words for how absolutely moronic and brain dead you have to be to think WBBC and BLM are equal. Ones a hyper-religious group that intentionally protest stuff as a way to incite people to violence in order to have their army of lawyers win assault cases to fund further incitement, one is a social movement that wants increased police accountability.
Seriously. The hate for BLM on this forum is absurd - if you disagree, okay, but comparing them to the WBBC?

Not to mention they've already clearly said what they're protesting - they specifically think that the MN state fair is unfair towards minority vendors, which is something that's moderately obvious if you've actually attended the MN state fair (which I have).
Protesting to raise awareness at the largest social event in Minneapolis/St. Paul area is a normal thing. They're not saying "shut down the state fair!"
Plus MN, especially MSP, tends to be very supportive of BLM and this doesn't interrupt the state fair in any way. The police are helping keep things running smoothly. Without arresting people. Because MN police are pretty good.

If you knew the economics behind vendors, you'd know that its impossible to get in there. The barriers to entry go far beyond if you're a minority or not.
Its strictly about the money.

You can't possibly know that by walking around. So what's BLM's evidence of discrimination?
is there any data on the percent of vendors that are white vs the percent of vendors that are minority? i'd like to see how it stands up to minnesota's demographics

That wouldn't be helpful at all. They would need to do businesses owned by minorities that can work in a fair compared to businesses owned by whites that can work in a fair. Even better would be number of applications by white and black business owners.
looking at Minnesota's census data, it appears that only 6.4% of Minnesotan businesses are minority-owned. could it be that the state fair was accurately representing the proportion of white:minority businesses in the state? i'm not necessarily doubting their claims, and i have never been there so i can't know, but i would still like to see if the vendors there line up with the census numbers
source for numbers: http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/27000.html
Minnesota is:
85% White
5% Black
4% Asian
2% Native
The remainder is rounded out by "Other"
I dunno .Isak. You can't throw around anecdotes without hard evidence.

Hey.
It's ok to really, really like black people like you oh so clearly do, but at this point you're just as blind and victimizing as the average BLM "activist".
The entire movement is doing more harm than good.
Instead of voting or reaching out to politicians in a civil manner that might actually change someone's mind, they are trying to shout and disrupt as much as possible, something that only affects less decisive politicians and further entrenches those who would be against BLM's suggestions in the first place.

BLM activists fail, nearly every time, to consider the entire statistics once they start seeing discrimination somewhere.
Have they looked at the ratio of black applicants for the MSF, and compared it to the approval?
For the applicants that were failed, did they have a look at what they were selling, the quality of the products and the reputation of the applicants?
The protest wasn't even about minority vendors, in their own words it was about injustice to black people in court system.
One of my relatives also owns the biggest cheese curd vendor in the Fair and it isn't a race issue more of a money issue and the fact it favors long time vendors more in limited space.

People who live in the west, where it's the primary federal institution they deal with day to day. Public lands and all that.
these titles get confusing when your primary meaning for the acronym "BLM" is "Bureau of Land Management"
It sounds even more ridiculous and confusing when you play FFXIV a lot and BLM is the abbreviation for "Black Mage".

Myself and many others who work there... sheesh.
Anybody who lives in the real world and not in some isolated internet wonderland.

I think that highlighting police brutality and a lack of police oversight as a defining topic of the 2016 election cycle is the opposite of "doing more harm than good."
Shouting and disrupting is how protests work. The Civil Rights Movement would have gotten absolutely nowhere if they politely wrote letters to their congressmen saying "hey would you mind maybe trying to stop disenfranchising us as voters and forcing us to use different facilities?" Absolutely nowhere. They got there by protesting - by inconveniencing normal people and flooding D.C. with protesters. You think the average person wasn't slightly miffed that they couldn't get to work because of thousands of thousands of protesters in the streets of DC? Inconveniencing people is part of protesting, because it brings attention to the situation, and the situation is that police are increasingly militarized and repeatedly get away with breaking the law.
The state fair's vendors have been locked down for years. It's almost impossible to become a vendor. Which means that, while Minnesota has been gaining racial diversity in recent years due to a load of refugees from Somalia and elsewhere, they are seriously under-represented in the state fair. Like Saxon said, they favor long-time vendors, who are largely white business owners.
I understand it's a money issue, but when you have almost zero black vendor owners, there's some degree of how representative the state fair is towards the minorities in the state. It also mostly wasn't about discriminatory vendor policies, but more towards racial injustice in law enforcement and the legal system.
It's also very, very difficult to vote for politicians who aren't "tough on crime" because those politicians simply don't exist in a lot of areas. It's a standard position - finding politicians who want to decriminalize marijuana and reduce sentences for petty crimes is almost impossible in most states.
I totally understand not liking BLM. My mom can't stand them. But she acknowledges that what they're doing is still important, and the issues they're fighting against are worth fighting against. You can dislike BLM, but if that makes you write off racial injustice in law enforcement and the legal system as nonexistent, you're demonstrably wrong.

What you're talking about is quotas. Even if their policy isn't racial at all, they must have X% of black vendors or they're in the wrong. You want them to either kick out venders that they've had for years, or lose money, so that they can check the box of having black people.
