• Sony Getting Rid of Linux on PS3
Say good-bye to Linux on the PS3 Those who own an older PS3 version and currently run Linux on the console will want to listen up: a new firmware update coming down later this week will kill that installation. According to Sony, it plans to release PlayStation 3 firmware version 3.21 on Thursday to achieve one goal: eliminate the "Other OS" option currently available in all pre-Slim models of the video game console. The feature allowed PS3 owners to install an operating system--in almost every case, Linux--onto the PlayStation 3. Sony said that its decision to remove the Other OS option is based on security concerns. The company contends that after installing the update, users will have "a more secure system." Those who currently use the Other OS option and have an operating system running on the PS3 will loss all data (and, obviously, the OS installation) after installing the update. Although Sony wants PS3 owners to download the software, it said that users won't be forced to do so. That said, if users don't install the firmware, they will lose access to the PlayStation Network and playback of games and Blu-ray movies that require the new software. The console will also stop playing copy-protected content from media servers. Sony's decision to remove the Other OS option from the PS3 isn't all that surprising. When it started shipping last year, the PlayStation 3 Slim didn't have the Other OS option included in its software. It seems that Sony is simply catching up on old PS3 models. Many of the folks who ran Linux on the PlayStation were quite happy with the PS3's performance, so it's rather unfortunate to see the PS3's Other OS option go. Users running Linux on the PS3 will want to backup their data before installing the firmware update Thursday.
Sony is going to get a shitload of criticism on their forums. Fuckers, that was one of the only thing we took pride in. Piece of shits.
It's not like it was useful anyway. It was so limited in what it could do. But I agree, Sony is dumb.
Considering Sony didn't allow much if any direct hardware access using Linux I honestly won't miss it. I find the Red Hat Linux kit they sold for the PS2 years ago was far better. Shoot, it even had access to a reasonable chunk of the hardware.
First off, I want to apologize to all the people who use Linux on their PS3. Before releasing, I weighed the pros and cons, and considered the possibility of an impact on OtherOS support. My logic was this. OtherOS support had already been removed from the Slim(not for technical reasons; I believe it only existed in the first place to promote the Cell for IBM) The builders had apparently no intention of including it in future products. So for the purposes of openness why not release? Not like anything else has(or probably will be) done on the PS3. Now you go and remove a feature that people expected to be included with the expensive device they purchased, citing "security concerns". What security concerns? It's not like the exploit can be run even close to without the users knowledge. You have to open the fucking thing up. How could this harm users? Your blog post doesn't list positive reasons for upgrading like it should. Instead it lists things you will lose if you don't upgrade. Seriously? The PlayStation 3 is the only product I know that loses features throughout it's life cycle. Software PS2 emulation, SACD playback, and OtherOS support are all just software switches you can flip. It's unbelievable you would go and flip one, not just on new boxes you are shipping, but on tens of millions already in the field. Again I'm sorry users. Sony, I expected more from you.
lol ps3 (User was banned for this post ("Why reply?" - Greeman))
provided you code it yourself and you rip the machine open.
Huh?
Is there really a such thing as keeping linux from being installed on anything? I was under the impression that you can install linux on anything, provided you code it yourself and you rip the machine open.
I'm going to soon install a hard drive in my PS2, maybe installing some Linux distribution on it and use it as a media player or something. I've heard that it's quite possible though. There's also software to play video and such from it without Linux.
Haha! This isn't for security concerns this is Sony shitting themselves because the PS3 has been hacked and is on the verge of having custom firmware and illegal game downloading. [editline]07:29PM[/editline] Apparently it's released on April 1st so it's obviously a joke, especially since sony a few months ago said...
Please be assured that SCE is committed to continue the support for previously sold models that have the “Install Other OS” feature and that this feature will not be disabled in future firmware releases.
People used Linux on the PS3?
People used Linux on the PS3?
uhhh yeah
Not for long :frown:
Yeah sony is fucking up big time with this. They've lost me as a future customer for anything made by them.

I wonder if USAF knows about this right now. Imagine their looks when some engineer comes in and says: "Yeah I just updated the firmware on our linux cluster. Bad news: they don't work anymore." "WHAT THE FUCK." (USAF bought 1000 or something PS3s to run linux in cluster on them. It was in the news a while ago.)
Apparently it's released on April 1st so it's obviously a joke, especially since sony a few months ago said...
You guys should read this guy's post
You guys should read this guy's post
Uh, sony says lots of things. Just like they said SACD was going to be big on the PS3, then they completely got rid of its compatibility.
[img_thumb]http://www.linuxscrew.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/riz-toaster.jpg[/img_thumb] You were saying?
But toaster can only run FreeBSD not Linux , that pic is shopped! :colbert:

The discs are still stupid expensive, the files would be huge and take forever to download, and you would need a Blu-Ray burner, and it would take a while to burn the discs. It would be too time consuming and expensive for people.
Yeah sony is fucking up big time with this. They've lost me as a future customer for anything made by them.
Lol.
It's geohot's fault. He'll die eventually.
Good move, Sony. I don't care about Linux, but this is just one more reason not to buy the most expensive and yet shittiest console on the market this gen. (User was banned for this post ("Trolling" - verynicelady))
and yet shittiest console on the market this gen.
Don't you fucking start it DON'T YOU FUCKING START IT
Good move, Sony.
lol have fun with your shitbox 360
I do. I also have fun with my Wii and DS. I sold my PSP 'cause it was collecting dust and I won't buy a PS3. Ever. Keep in mind, I'm not a fanboy, I simply invest my money where I think its best to, otherwise I'd have only a PS3. I had both previous consoles and loved them more than the others. By the way, nice first post.
Uh, sony says lots of things. Just like they said SACD was going to be big on the PS3, then they completely got rid of its compatibility.
Because it turned out that no one really cared. SACD players are fucking expensive, it was probably a cost-cutting maneuver.
