• Woman starves to death in spiritual quest to live on sunlight alone
A woman starved to death after embarking on a spiritual journey which involved giving up food and water and attempting to exist on nothing but sunlight. The Swiss woman, who was in her fifties, apparently got the idea after watching the documentary film 'In the Beginning, There Was Light' which features an Indian guru who claims to not have eaten anything in 70 years. The Zurich newspaper Tages-Anzeiger reported Wednesday that the unnamed woman decided to follow the radical fast in 2010 The paper claimed there have been similar cases of self-starvation in Germany, Britain and Australia. The prosecutors' office in the Swiss canton of Aargau confirmed Wednesday that the woman died in January 2011 in the town of Wolfhalden in eastern Switzerland. Spokeswoman Jennifer Rissi says prosecutors haven't opened a criminal investigation over the woman's death. Followers of the cult Breatharianism believe that the energy they save on digesting food and drink can be transformed into physical, emotional and spiritual energy. In 1999, Australian-born Verity Linn, 49, was found dead in a remote part of the Scottish Highlands after attempting a 21-day fast. Excerpts from her diary showed she was refusing to eat or drink in the belief it would 'spiritually cleanse' her body and 'recharge her both physically and mentally'. In a separate incident a woman died in an Australian hospital after attempting a 21-day fast. --------------------------------- Source: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2135324/Woman-starves-death-spiritual-journey-trying-live-sunlight-alone.html
2012 Darwin Award Nominee?
2012 Darwin Award Nominee?
That's more within the realms of doing something idiotic. Now, a lot of you may disagree here and I sense I'll receive some boxes for saying this, but I don't think she was idiotic. This falls within the purview of philosophy and belief, where she happened to be misguided and wrong. But it's not dumb, I'd say. Merely misinformed. EDIT: Misinformed was perhaps not the right word to express what I meant.
Natural selection at work.
Dumb bitch.
But it's not dumb, I'd say. Merely misinformed.
No, she had all the information, she just chose not to eat. That is dumb.
Did she have a diet of drinking 4 liters of Liquid Chlorophyll a day before doing this?
The religious mind.
The problem lays here:
" Breatharianism believe that the energy they save on digesting food and drink can be transformed into physical, emotional and spiritual energy."
Entropy anyone? Also, what constitutes 'Emotional' or 'Spiritual' energy? How does one quantify this? Scientific illiteracy is all this boils down to..
No, she had all the information, she just chose not to eat. That is dumb.
I think he means misinformed in terms of science and transfer of energy. "Oh hey, this Indian person survived 70 years without food. Science can't explain it, so why bother using it when I'll attempt the same thing? Surely nothing will go wrong." I'd say it was a mix, but more so misinformed.
The religious mind.
This doesn't have to do with religion, just spirituality. Those "Breatherarians" just follow the example of one person who did it best. It's not like they made a religion after him.
The religious mind.
I'd formulate a response having to do with "shit" that you shouldn't be starting here, but my religious mind is too busy catering to your retarded stereotypes.

My sister is into this, and some of her friends, too. For me, I respect that woman's religious right to express her religion by starving herself to death, but that doesn't mean I have to think it's not fucking dumb. Not only does science and medicine go DIRECTLY against this man's claim, we've all felt hunger. I hate being hungry. It's nearly at 2.5! Can I be excused?

Anyone remember that monk who claimed to have lived for years on end without food? He was taken into a lab for study and he hadn't actually eaten anything.
P. sure respecting means you don't think it's fucking dumb.
No, respecting means I don't openly call it out for being dumb. I can think whatever I like.
Natural selection at work.
This isn't how natural selection works.
I say her plan has worked; she has become a spirit!
Why would you respect anyone's choice to do this? What a silly cow.
This isn't how natural selection works.
If she hasn't had kids then it's natural selection since her stupidity and own actions caused her death before reproduction.
The religious mind.
Yes every religious person is stupid enough not to eat for no real reason. Every one of your fucking posts in this section is about how all religious or conservative people are so dumb compared to you. The fact that you can just categorize these immense demographics as "lower" than you just shows how damn stupid YOU are. People like you on this giant high horse are some of the most irritating people and the world would be a happier place if you were gone. There's my rant for the day.
If she hasn't had kids then it's natural selection since her stupidity and own actions caused her death before reproduction.
Natural selection is about a species being adapted to it's environment, you're thinking of Social Darwinism.
Just for the record:
There is nothing admirable about starving yourself close to death. Youtube user "Aaroncohen" went without food for a total of 123 days to improve her relationship with an imaginary creature -- god. She went 40 days without food, only drinking water and taking a daily multi-vitamin. This was followed by a week eating strictly Kosher Passover foods, and then the process was repeated twice again. "Aaroncohen" recorded a number of video diary entries chronicling her experience - this is a brief summary of the results. 6 months after putting herself through this deplorable ordeal, Aaroncohen fell pregnant with her 8th child (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFbvOAbhcT8). I think it is unlikely her body recovered from near death in that time, thus placing the baby at risk. I am somewhat confused as to what Aaroncohen's religion actually is. She refers to Kosher Passover food (which indicates Jewish), but in conversation on my first ever video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2HWVkS2g7xo) she refers to herself as Christian. Make up your own mind.
This is a religious mindset..
It's a cult. :)
Not the same thing as a religion. Cults may follow a religious figure, but they're simply a small splinter cell of ideology that isn't to be taken seriously in any sort of spiritual matters. Obviously fanatics will herd towards something they like, in this case, the "Breather" cult, which she did. Let's face it, not everyone has their Ph.D in some sort of science, and she most likely didn't either. She was misinformed on how hunger works in scientific terms and how her body would eventually react to it.
But it's not dumb

giving up food and water and attempting to exist on nothing but sunlight
Pick one.
Yes every religious person is stupid enough not to eat for no real reason.
He made no comparison between himself and this lady who tried to demonstrate that her mind could break the law of thermodynamics.
Natural selection is about a species being adapted to it's environment, you're thinking of Social Darwinism.
Ah yeah I'm thinking macro mechanics, fuck I'm out of practice since I haven't been at uni in like a year.
