After spanking of teen girls, Texas school board gives official OK
On Monday night, the school board in Springtown, Texas, voted to allow students to be paddled by employees of the opposite gender if their parents give written permission. The board's previous policy permitted only same-gender paddling.
No one really argued with the idea of corporal punishment; at issue was the question of who gets to administer it, specifically can an adult male swat young girls?

The entire issue went on the school board agenda after two parents recently complained that a male vice principal had paddled their daughters, in apparent violation of the district’s policy that calls for the staffer and the student to be of the same gender.
“I have tried to be very professional and not personal about it,” a tearful Anna Jorgensen, whose daughter was one of those who was paddled, told the board, according to WFFA, a television station that has been following the dispute. “I didn't know the media would turn it into all of this, and I feel very sorry for putting Springtown in that spot.”
Last week, Jorgensen told the station that her daughter’s bottom had been bruised by the punishment. Another mother, Cathi Watt, then came forward and complained that her daughter’s bottom had also been bruised.
“These men that swat these girls, they are telling the boys in the school, 'It's OK to hit a girl and it's OK to bruise a girl,' and that's not right,” Watt told board members Monday night.
Supt. Michael Kelley asked the board to change the policy to allow males to paddle female students because not all of the schools have enough females to perform the task.
According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the superintendent said the recent paddlings were contrary to the policy in place at that time, and for that, he apologized to the girls and their families.
“I take it very seriously every time we use corporal punishment,” Kelley said.
About three-quarters of the school districts in Texas allow corporal punishment, which is legal in 18 other states as well.

I'm outraged
Gays should get the same rights to spank same genders!
How the fuck are these kind of punishments still allowed in public schools? If somebody touched my kid like this there would be hell to pay.

Well it is Texas and honestly fuck Texas.
maybe you should go back to school and learn how to read
Note that was only in regard to paddlings by opposite gender employees. Paddlings in general are still a-ok apparently without a specific permission.
When will anyone learn that corporal punishment like this doesn't work. Kids will just find better ways to do things wrong without getting caught.

I think if you say that in Texas they kill you
maybe you should go back to school and learn how to read
I don't think the parents should have the right to tell someone to beat their children.
Physical pain has never been a deterrence for anything.

I never said I agree with the decision, but it's kinda hard to get upset over them spanking your child if you give them permission.
If anyone's gonna beat my kids it'll be me.

I think they previously only allowed same gender paddling but it still required written permission. What they're doing now means opposite genders can now spank your child too.

Generally it is a crime at local and state levels to assault another person, but it is also a federal offense to strike someone. Simple assault falls under the territorial jurisdiction of the US government.
It doesn't matter if you have different laws in your state, the federal laws always take precedence and override any less strict state law.
This is illegal, regardless of the sex of the person smacking students, and I would rain hell down on a school that lifted a finger against my kid.
Did someone say a spanking?

hahaha what i dont even know what to think of this post what are you doing
Corporal punishment....stay classy Texas.
What they fail to mention is that she had a choice between being suspended and getting a spanking for cheating, she chose to get "paddled".
And I could care less what gender administered the punishment if she chose it.
There's so many better ways to go about a disobedient student.
Jesus fuck people.
O.K., coming from a Houstonian (that's in Texas by the way):
1. This is NOT common at ALL. Honestly, I've never heard of this stuff happening since the 60's
2. The parents KNOW about this. In fact, it's probably one of those things they tell you if you want to go to the school.
3. I know that "oh if they touch my kid there would be hell to pay!!!!!!!!" but jesus people, it's spanking. You know, spanking, the closest thing to not douchey hitting of children?
Christ, people.

Doesn't really sound like it. The biggest issue here is that a man delivered the paddling, not the paddling itself. I'm under the impression that this is only an issue because the male principle paddled two female students.
“These men that swat these girls, they are telling the boys in the school, 'It's OK to hit a girl and it's OK to bruise a girl,' and that's not right,” Watt told board members Monday night.
It honestly sounds like simply handing the paddle over to a female associate would have nullified the whole thing, which is stupid because a paddling is a paddling, but whatever. Texas never made much sense.
And I'm not trying to be a dick by posting this, but here's the section from the student handbook regarding corporal punishment in the Springtown ISD. It actually sounds a little outdated, but different strokes for different folks I guess.
Prohibiting the Use of Corporal Punishment
Corporal punishment—spanking or paddling the student—may be used as a discipline management technique in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and policy FO(LOCAL) in the district’s policy manual.
If you do not want corporal punishment to be administered to your child as a method of student discipline, submit a written statement to the campus principal stating this decision. A signed statement must be provided each year.
You may choose to revoke this request at any time during the year by providing a signed statement to the campus principal. However, district personnel may choose to use discipline methods other than corporal punishment even if the parent requests that this method be used on the student.
Wow all this stereotyping towards southern states. I live in Louisiana and adults think twice before laying their finger on a student without the authority to do so.
If anything, the students beat up the teachers.

I live in Texas, too, but while it's not common in my area, maybe it's more common in other, smaller areas? Houston is a pretty big city compared to a small town in the middle of nowhere.
Spanking might not be as bad as severe abuse, but it's still not a way to discipline students.
I though spanking of kids with paddles was banned from schools...
Did someone just say weeaboo? 'Cause I think I just heard someone say weeaboo

I would agree with you on this last point if it weren't for the fact that apparently some of these girls were getting actual bruises. At that point we've moved beyond (relatively) harmless spanking* into full-on abuse. Realistically though, the school shouldn't have any right to do this and, as Gunfox so aptly showed, they are actually breaking the law. Parental permission or not, this needs to stop.
*spanking in this case being defined as a light swat that leaves no lasting pain.

Yes, let's teach kids that if someone does something to wrong them, or something wrong in general, violence is the correct way to rectify this.
Corporal punishment is one of the ways people who attack others over the slightest provocation are made.

did you skip over the word Texas or?

It varies from state to state, and even ISD to ISD. Education is still administered by the individual state governments, not the federal government (despite the fact that it is almost entirely funded by the federal government.)
