Portland, Oregon police are investigating a possible hate crime after two gay men were beaten after being seen walking hand-in-hand. One of the victims reports: "I left [the ER] with 9 stitches in my lips, two black eyes, a dislodged jaw, some loose teeth, severe swelling where they hit me on my cheek, and scrapes and bruises on my head."
PORTLAND, Ore. -- Portland police say they’re investigating a possible hate crime against two men who had been holding hands.Detectives say Brad Forkner and Christopher Rosevear were walking hand-in-hand Sunday evening in Waterfront Park and then headed over the Hawthorne Bridge. As the pair walked, police say, they noticed several men behind them who were talking, laughing and pointing, but they weren’t sure if it was directed at them.Police say the attack happened as Forkner and Rosevear walked from the bridge to the trail toward the East Bank Esplanade. The pair told officers the men pushed and punched Forkner before he managed to break away and call 911.Police say the attackers hit Rosevear in the head, face, back and ribs before running off.”It’s too bad that people are still walking around a city like Portland feeling, well, actually unsafe,” says Paul Fukui, the operations manager of the Q-Center, which advocates for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered community.Fukui says the attack comes about a year after a similar assault on two gay men in downtown Portland. That attack prompted "Q Patrols," where volunteers walked the city's entertainment district late at night.Fukui says more volunteers are needed for the patrols."Let’s look out for each other. Let’s try to keep each other safe," he says. The three attackers were described as white, in their 20s and all about 5 feet 11 inches tall. One was seen wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt, another was wearing a white or cream hooded sweatshirt and the third was wearing a brown hooded sweatshirt.According to the victims, several people witnessed the attack. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Kevin Warren at 503-823-3761.Portland Mayor Sam Adams issued a statement Tuesday and said people should be able to hold hands without fear for their safety.“We seek to be the city of the most equal opportunity, and we can only be that city if all people are safe and have a sense of safety on our streets and in our parks," Adams says.According to the Portland Police Bureau, there have been eight reported bias crimes in Portland from Jan. 1 to April 30. There were 15 such reported crimes in the same time span last year.
According to the above-linked news story, several witnesses observed the attack but did nothing to help. The three assailants are described as white men in their 20s. Source: http://www.kptv.com/news/28011877/detail.html
I hope police are hot on the trail of these scumbags.
several witnesses observed the attack but did nothing to help
what the fuck?
It just fills me with rage to know that there are other members of the species I belong to that are this stupid. For fuck's sake, they were holding hands? I can't even imagine getting the least bit angry at that, let alone wanting the urge to beat them for it. I really, really hate people. I hate all the pre-defined meanings everything has. I hate tradition. Tradition is stupid. Things need to change.

But holding hands is how they communicate plans for the coming invasion!

this is despicable. I live in oregon, pretty close to portland, and it astounds me that there are people like this in oregon, one of the most gay-friendly states in the US.

Don't mean to be a dick, but why do stories like this get posted over and over again? I understand that it's "news", but it's something we're all aware of and it seems like every day theres like 3 articles about gay people being harassed.
Disgusting.
Because it's important to remember that this sort of thing still goes on.
Do people need daily reminders that people hate gays? I don't need people throwing Army recruitment slips at me to remind me that there's a war going on, I don't see how you'd need daily news articles to remind you that there are hate crimes going on.
I live in the valley. The lesbian population near where I live is huge and incredibly visible. Oregon does have a shitload of rednecks and hicks though. While they aren't all homophobic and racist, there are enough that are.

Don't be ridiculous.

There's going to be articles about issues that are considered news in the news section.
Wow, this is strange, I walk across the Hawthorne bridge almost every other day, if not every day. This is actually very absurd, especially in Portland, a city like this. Here's actually the area they're talking about in the article, sorry for the quality, from my phone.
