A new Banksy mural showing a group of pigeons holding anti-immigration banners has been destroyed following a complaint the work was "racist". The mural in Clacton-on-Sea - where a by-election is due to take place following the local MP's defection to UKIP - appeared this week. It showed four pigeons holding signs including "Go Back to Africa", while a more exotic-looking bird looked on. The local council, which removed it, said it did not know it was by Banksy. Tendring District Council said it received a complaint that the mural was "offensive" and "racist". The artist, who chooses to remain anonymous, posted pictures of the work on his website earlier. But by the time it had been announced, the mural had already been removed due to the complaint received on Tuesday.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-essex-29446232
Tendring District Council said it received a complaint that the mural was "offensive" and "racist".
Can it get any more ironic?
I'd be really fucking happy if I'd be the guy who vandalized that building and it got into the news no matter if it's gone now or not. Kind of counter-productive?

Banksy is a sell out anyway now, long live Robbo
Banksy doesn't really need publicity like this at all.
It's free though so why not? I have read his name a few times but I didn't make the connection here. This article made me look up his Wikipedia page. I now know who he is, giving him publicity and spreading whatever message he is trying to convey even further if only by a minimal amount. The exact opposite of what this article and the actions taken against his graffiti were trying to do. And I highly doubt he gives a fuck that someone painted over it. It's going to pop up somewhere again, not the same graffiti but he will continue. What was the reason behind the anti-immigration thing though? He doesn't strike me as an extremist from what I've read, more focusing on political issues and the like.
Banksy is a sell out anyway now, long live Robbo
Rip robbo
Truth hurts doesnt it? I bet the ones who complained are those kind of people who consider themselves open minded but are scared of black people, the "I'm not racist but..." saying guys
Pigeons are generally seen as vermin/"flying rats", so perhaps it was to convey dirty minds breed hate of fresh new people with bright ideas? I don't paticularly see it as racist though.
Banksy doesn't really need publicity like this at all.
Like what? People not understanding the nature of his graffiti?
Banksy is a sell out anyway now, long live Robbo
Both are sell outs. All hail Bob Ross! I hope to meet him some time in the future!
Like what? People not understanding the nature of his graffiti?
He is famous I was literally just saying he isn't in need of publicity because he is well known.
Pigeons are generally seen as vermin/"flying rats", so perhaps it was to convey dirty minds breed hate of fresh new people with bright ideas?
It isn't racist. It's quite the opposite. People that find it racist need to find better shit to do
I think the people finding it racist quite simply just don't get it and have no understanding of irony. Notice how the birds with signs are ugly pigeons and the bird they're protesting is beautiful. Also how the pigeons way outweigh the helpless looking African bird. The reason this is relevant to that town is because the MP recently defected to UKIP, the anti immigration party.
Man fuk all yall you don't know our struggle
people in britain really don't have any sense of sarcasm...
I don't see anything wrong with what they did. I really like Bansky, but his stuff has a certain impermanence that makes it more powerful, so when a piece like this is covered up it's all part of the experience. Unless of course it was on private property with an owner who concentend to have it done, or decided to keep it and the council forced it to be removed. That's a different story.
