The number of murders in New York City is expected to hit a record low this year, as officials credited police efforts in reducing crime.
So far, there have been 414 homicides in the city, down 19% from 2011 and the fewest since reliable records began in 1963.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the number showed that "the safest big city in America is safer".
Meanwhile, Chicago has hit 500 murders for the year.
The US' third largest city has seen a wave of gang violence in the past year, including one weekend day on which six people died.

'Stop-and-frisk'

Mr Bloomberg and New York Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly announced the numbers during a police academy graduation on Friday.
The 2012 murder rate was less than a fifth of the city's record of 2,245 homicides in 1990.
The drop in the murder rate is "a testament to the hard work and determination of the men and women who put their lives on the line for us every day, "Mr Bloomberg said. "And it also reflects our commitment to doing
everything possible to stop gun violence."
When people ask me, 'What's different about Chicago?' that's one of the things I tell them. We have a proliferation of illegal firearms”

In a statement, Mr Kelly attributed the decline to the increasing use of stop-and-frisk, a controversial tactic where police can stop and search people on the street they consider suspicious.
"We're preventing crimes before someone is killed and before someone else has to go to prison for murder or other serious crimes," he said.
Civil rights groups and some local politicians have criticised the practice, saying that most people stopped turn out to be innocent, and that it unfairly targets black and Latino men.
Other crimes like rapes, robberies, assaults and burglaries were up slightly in the city, while grand larceny went up by 9%, due to increased thefts of electronic devices.

Gangs and guns

Chicago recorded its 500th murder on Friday.
While the city's murder rate is now higher than New York City, Chicago has only about one-third of New York's population.
Most of the violence has been in Chicago's troubled south and west sides, but there also have been a handful of incidents in the downtown area.
Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy and other officials blame the death toll on a splintering of the city's traditional gangs as well as a large number of illegal guns available in the city.
"In the first six months of the year, we seized three guns for every gun seized in Los Angeles and nine guns for every gun confiscated by the New York Police Department," Mr McCarthy said.
"When people ask me, 'What's different about Chicago?' that's one of the things I tell them. We have a proliferation of illegal firearms," he said.
Illinois does not ban assault weapons and the high-capacity magazines as do New York and California.
The city's homicides were 80% gang-related, and 80% of the victims were black, although only 33% of the city's population is black.

This is fucking amasing
Ofcourse the second we can be like crimes dropping we have to fucking bring gun laws into it. I mean yeah the statistic's can be used to support lax or strict gun laws (Depending which side you belong on) but overall you can't just say lax gun laws or strict gun laws reduce crime.
Theres a million different effects. If the entire fucking city looks depressing and run down and strict gun laws then that's just not going to fix crime rate, Compared to a city that is really up-to-date and modern and alive with lax gun laws. (Not comparing Chicago and NYC)
Besides that I'm happy to see crime rates drop in the city.
God Bless this police department for their wonderful gun collecting services and assault weapons bans, they've undoubtedly taken care of crime, and with any luck, and more control, we should be able to completely eradicate crime off the face of the earth. gob blus us everyone

fixed

I thought you were into people getting killed though.
If you know what I mean.
C'mon New York, us Chicagoans are kicking your asses this year
[sp]But seriously, we need help[/sp]

To be fair, the proper answer to crime should be a better police department, not vigilante justice.
Though it's silly to take away people's means of defending themselves.
Damn, that's amazing. 8 murders every week...
"Illinois does not ban assault weapons and the high-capacity magazines as do New York and California."
Just had to throw that in there didn't they.
Lol "assault weapons" and high capacity mags are not used at all in Chicago killings. I would bet my life on that. It's all 9mm pistols.
Jesus cant you guys just be happy that New Yorkers are killing each other less
only 8 murders a week? brb moving to ny
Is it just me or is 414 homicides a year a lot?
Welcome to America
Is it just me or is 414 homicides a year a lot?
It's a lot better than the 2,245 murders they had in 1990. Yes it's a lot, but it's getting better.
Imagine several decades from now when a singe homicide a year is an unimaginable tragedy.
Sounds humanly impossible.
probably juked the stats
Woah, I know I didn't influence their policy making, but the stop and frisk method was something I tentatively suggested in a research paper I wrote last year about gun control. Time to give myself a cookie.

Well whether or not a place has high crime or low crime is not dependent on gun laws, because there are places with high crime and strict gun laws, and places with high crime and loose gun laws, and vice versa for both.
What causes crime is socioeconomics, mass inequality or discrimination, or some severe mental illnesses. You lower poverty, you lower crime. You increases education success you decrease crime, you start efforts to fight discrimination you lower crime. This is precisely why there are still various European countries with fairly loose gun laws despite being like super liberal or even socialist.
thanks OBAMA
wait a second
so new york is actually succeeding at something?
you're lying
Well, the New Yorkers in the subway are doing what they can to rectify this deficiency.

MurderDeathKill! MurderDeathKill! MurderDeathKill!
I can't help thinking Sandy contributed to this at least partially.

I'm trying to fit in to the community.
It's not easy man
I can't help thinking Sandy contributed to this at least partially.
Oh yeah, without a doubt. The same thing happened with Hurricane Katrina. Crime rates significantly dropped in areas affected, mostly because the thugs couldn't steal anything because it was soggy and dead. Meanwhile, all the surrounding areas that weren't affected? Crime rates tripled overnight. Texas got the brunt of it, if things weren't bolted down, they disappeared. It's kinda shitty, but now I wouldn't mind if a hurricane hit Chicago so all the thugs can fuck off from this city and I don't feel like I'm gonna get mugged every time I step outside. Also, a lot of the hurricane katrina victims did move to Chicago. And a lot of them? Lower class, poverty-stricken gangbangers addicted to heroin. I feel bad for them. But that doesn't change the fact that they're the scum of the eart.

Red Sox fans might have a hard time with this.
new york's crime rate has been falling year on year since like the early 90s I think
I can't help thinking Sandy contributed to this at least partially.
How? Sandy came about maybe two months ago, and why should criminals stop murdering just when the city's infrastructure is having a hard time? Doesn't seem logical to me.
The criminals probably have cold feet.
