The discovery of a man's skull and foot in bushland in Sydney's north has surprised local residents and mystified police.
The skull was unearthed by an animal and stumbled upon by a bushwalker near Watson Avenue in Hornsby on Sunday, police said.
Further searches of the area were carried out by a dozen officers over several hours on Thursday, with police finding parts of a foot that was covered in debris.
"Police have been back there today in the area and searched the bushland and revealed further bones," Detective Inspector Michael Banfield told reporters.
"It looks like possibly a bone belonging to a foot of a human."
He said the remains belonged to a Caucasian male, possibly in his 20s or 30s, but a forensic anthropologist had been unable to determine how long the bones had been there.
"It's several years at this stage. It certainly doesn't say that it's decades," the detective said.
Det Insp Banfield added that the skull had not been pierced by a bullet, and police couldn't say whether the death was murder, accidental or suicide.
"It could have been a death by misadventure, it could be suicide, it could be an accidental death, it could be anything," he said.
Police, who are also open to the possibility the bones belonged to a homeless person who lived in the bushland reserve, will continue searching a 70-metre by 40-metre area of bushland on Friday.
A resident of Watson Avenue, who has lived in the area for more than 30 years, said the find came as a total surprise.
"It's a very quiet cul-de-sac," she told AAP, without wishing to be identified.
"It's very surprising".
The woman said she had only known of one instance of house-breaking in all the years she had lived in the street and she still felt safe living there.
She said the area of bushland where the bones had been found had become more inaccessible and overgrown over the years.
"It's difficult to walk through there," she said, adding that some of the tracks led towards a quarry.
Further testing is being carried out on the bones, dental records are being sought to secure samples for DNA analysis and missing persons reports are being checked.
STOP RIGHT THERE CRIMINAL SCUM,
We have wallpapers, games and more!
So, who is Sydney, and why was there a foot in her bush?
It seems so easy to dispose of evidence. There's miles and miles of outback and bushland in Australia, it seems odd that criminals always seem to get caught...but maybe the best ones dont D:

It's only murder if you're caught.
Damn Mr Bush! I never knew you had a serious case of Foot Fetish!
