Jerry Seinfeld believes he might be on the autism spectrum.
The observational comic of "Seinfeld" fame made the admission to Brian Williams during an interview for NBC Nightly News.
The 60-year-old said that as he's grown older, he's become much more aware of the possibility that he might suffer from the disorder.
think on a very drawn-out scale, I think I'm on the [autism] spectrum," he said, citing markers in his self-diagnosis such as "never paying attention to the right things" and basic social engagement being "really a struggle."
The National Institute of Mental Health expounds on an array of symptoms that could indicate the disorder, including "persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction across multiple contexts" as well as "restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities.
The stand-up comic, who just launched the fifth season of his Web series "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee," added that comics are "the only kind of people that I feel completely relaxed around." That's why he's continued to execute the conversational show, which delivers on exactly what the title promises.
this was unexpected

1. This is a self diagnosis and means nothing.
2. Even if he is autistic, what does that matter?

who knew?

Considering how loose the conditions for somebody being diagnosed with autism are, self diagnosis might be perfectly sufficient.
That only proves how irrelevant it is, tho.
Everyone who is creative or has an interesting personality is on the autistic spectrum these days.
Also the word autistic spectrum is pretty hilarious not going to lie. Is Jerry just making shit up? Is our general idea of someone on the "autistic spectrum" too broad or something?
Wouldn't it be really hard to flourish as a comedian while on the autism spectrum to any noticeable degree, since the job hinges on crowd reading skills and a sociable personality?

Normal people are boring
What's the deal with Sonic the Hedgehog. huh?

Autism doesn't mean you are asocial. It means some your social abilities are diminished or work in unusual way.

not exactly, autistic people are insanely blunt and speak whats on their mind. the result is hilarious.

Haha, because that's like the thing he says!

That's by far not the universal rule.
That's by far not the universal rule.
there are exceptions to everything.
Here's a challenge: Look up a full list of things in the autism spectrum and tell me that none of them apply to you. I dare you.

Yes because stereotyping a group of people already not understood by society as a whole is really fucking funny.

I'm autistic and I still find it funny.

So am I, and I don't particularly take a kind eye to it when you've had the whole internet stereotype of you being some weird socially, awkward person by members of your own fucking family. Last fucking thing people like me need is more stereotyping.
I think its really evident that its just one of those "huh, I wonder if I got this" kind of things. He is a made man with a successful life, just kind of being public about an internal thought he has had about himself. Maybe he'll get evaluated, maybe he won't.
But what stuns me is how completely inane this thread is.
Yes, you can have overlapping "symptoms" with autistic individuals, this does not mean you are autistic, those are simply personality quirks or traits that show up heavily in autism. I know several people with autism and they are all very different from each other, and we even share some of the same personality traits, but it is very clear to me where and how they are autistic with the things they struggle with.
Speaking as somebody with Aspergers, I think that while he's old enough to analyze his history and draw a conclusion for himself, his self diagnosing is going to lead a lot of people who want to be special snowflakes to self diagnose themselves to be "special". It's already annoying enough to have the average tumblrina claiming to have aspergers because they're shy around a certain boy but are otherwise fine socially and physically.
the only way to find out: give him a copy of minecraft

i have done a lot of aide work in classes for people with autism and this is a pretty insulting presumption for them. most people in the spectrum are very high functioning and don't act like this at all
WHATS THE DEAL WITH DSM ANYWAY
just like it's discriminatory to insinuate that anyone with adhd/add is incapable of working properly, insinuating that anyone that falls under the autism spectrum is low functioning and have bare social capabilities is stupid and counter productive

no, thats a pretty accurate observation. i didnt just pull that out of thin air and say it. ive taken that from experience.

Ever considered the possibility of confirmation bias though? Your only going to remember the ones who did it and to be fair its not like you immediately know or not whether someone is autistic or not.

ive met quite a few autistic people and as i said above there are exceptions. the common theme that i have noticed in lower and even in the highest functioning echelons is how literal they are and how they dont beat around the bush about what they want or what they are thinking and state their opinions loudly.

i work w/ special needs people n teach them stuff like basic computer use skills. it's just rude to assume that everyone like that acts in the same way

perhaps i am mixing my point up. what i am saying is autistic people are some of the most honest people out there- for better or worse. you can ask a parent who has a child on the spectrum and they are likely going to just tell you they just say whats on their mind but as i said earlier there are exceptions for everything. autism is a mix and match and every single case is different which you guys are correct about and no two are completely the same.
