Facebook will use your browsing history to target ads
Facebook will now use personal information gathered from your activities elsewhere on the Web to more precisely target advertisements on the social network.
Given Facebook's extensive reach around the globe, the development has alarmed privacy advocates who are asking federal regulators review the matter. Democratic Media vowed to press Federal Trade Commission Chairwoman Edith Ramirez on the agency's failure to raise objections to Facebook's new data-grabbing plan.
In an effort to quiet concerns, Facebook said it would let users see why certain ads pop up in their News Feeds, similar to what Google does. Users can then add or remove an interest to make the ads more relevant.

Facebook made the announcement in a blog post on Thursday.
With its "like" buttons on websites across the Web, Facebook has been able to keep tabs on what its 1.3 billion users are doing. But this is the first time the company will use people's browsing history to target ads on its service.
The company is looking to ramp up revenue as it competes with Google for ad dollars.
Facebook said users have asked to see ads that are more relevant to them.
"Let's say that you're thinking about buying a new TV, and you start researching TVs on the Web and in mobile apps. We may show you ads for deals on a TV to help you get the best price or other brands to consider. And because we think you're interested in electronics, we may show you ads for other electronics in the future, like speakers or a game console to go with your new TV," the company said.
In 2012, it settled charges with the FTC that it had deceived consumers. Under the settlement, Facebook is required to get the consent of users before making changes to its privacy settings. It's also subject to 20 years of independent privacy audits.
"Allowing companies subject to legal orders to disregard their privacy commitments to consumers must end," said Marc Rotenberg, executive director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center.

Suddenly my facebook became the pirate bay
cool, can't wait to see ads about shitposting
i keep on getting rethink-Isreal advertisements so its definitely already in play
So basically, the same as Google except it's not going to be tied to an easily-resetable anonymized ID?
So basically I'll see ads for random science stuff, really weird and strange things people have come up with, video games and anti-government conspiracy websites?
Good thing i dont use facebook anymore
This... is exactly how all advertising on the web works.
People don't use ad-blocker?
People don't use ad-blocker?
That prevents you from seeing the ads but won't do much to alleviate privacy concerns unless you block the like buttons, whatever cookies facebook uses, and never use a facebook account. Whether it's actually a privacy concern is subjective - your browsing history isn't going to contain your name alongside a list of things you like, people you know, and where you live, but these things can generally be gleaned from the large collection of browsing data associated with your unique identifier. Even then, advertising companies like Google and Facebook have an active interest in keeping this information to themselves because it's the data that allows them to effectively serve ads and make money. If that information leaked, anyone could possess the information Facebook and Google have collected without any of the costs associated with collecting it.
Don't they already do this? All the ads I see are about tactical gear and veterans crap
So I'm going to continue not seeing a single ad anywhere on their site? Cool.
People don't use ad-blocker?
I'm reasonably certain that AdBlocker wouldn't block something like this. Last I heard AdBlocker still loads ads then just hides them. Something like Ghostery should work though I believe. (Things like Facebook and G+ buttons are something it can specifically target too.)
this is how ads have worked for years, who cares
they're already collecting all the information they can on you anyway so if they can use that to show you interesting ads that's not a bad thing
But it sounds scary and I don't know much about how things work quick everybody panic

Pretty much every website does this, you guys know.
Doesn't Gmail/Hotmail even scan your email subject names for ad marketing as well?

Yeah, it's how things already work. I said that.
But of the possible privacy concerns, which I understand but don't really possess, adblock alone doesn't address them.
Thats why I will always keep my Ghostery active unless I need some social stuff.
And I wont see any of their shitty ads because Adblock
One time I was Google messaging my gf, talking about lingerie. I also told her "don't worry be happy" at an earlier point.
A few hours later I was getting ads for mastectomy bras and bobby mcferrin songs.
Very odd. Very invasive.
Privacy? What privacy? You have no privacy, valued customer.
half of facepunch is gonna have more porn ads than pornhub
Welp, time to browse Facebook in a virtual machine.
Not mine... mostly because I'm the last human on earth who neither has nor has ever had a facebook.
Well I'd say they're already doing it now.
I searched for camera rental equipment on vistek. Guess what I see on my Facebook home page some time later? Ads from vistek. And posts.
I honestly want targeted ads because they serve a purpose. There have been ads that actually interest me and make me aware of a product or service that I ended up buying. Generic ads are not only worthless to me but they are worthless to an advertiser.
Is it possible to get ads about advertising?
Don't they already do this? All the ads I see are about tactical gear and veterans crap
I was thinking this, I only get ads based on things I have browsed (mostly amazon ads) or pages I have interacted with. I assumed they were always doing this.
I wonder though, do they / will they respect no track requests.

Yes, through Google anyway. I have had adverts advertising how to drive traffic to websites via web adverts.
Adception.

If you want to have private chats, just get XMPP and create a private server, or use cryptocat.
