A company controlled by Donald Trump, the Republican nominee for president, secretly conducted business in Communist Cuba during Fidel Castro’s presidency despite strict American trade bans that made such undertakings illegal, according to interviews with former Trump executives, internal company records and court filings.
Documents show that the Trump company spent a minimum of $68,000 for its 1998 foray into Cuba at a time when the corporate expenditure of even a penny in the Caribbean country was prohibited without U.S. government approval. But the company did not spend the money directly. Instead, with Trump’s knowledge, executives funneled the cash for the Cuba trip through an American consulting firm called Seven Arrows Investment and Development Corp. Once the business consultants traveled to the island and incurred the expenses for the venture, Seven Arrows instructed senior officers with Trump’s company—then called Trump Hotels & Casino Resorts—how to make it appear legal by linking it after the fact to a charitable effort.

Donald Trump’s campaign manager denied Thursday that one of the GOP nominee’s businesses violated the U.S.-Cuban embargo in 1998, dismissing an investigative report that accused Trump of knowingly spending $68,000 staking out an investment on the island.
“Read the entire story. It starts out with a screaming headline, as it usually does, that he did business in Cuba. And it turns out that he decided not to invest there. I think they paid money, as I understand from the story, in 1998 — and we're not supposed to talk about years ago when it comes to the Clintons,” Trump's campaign manager, Kellyanne Conway, said on ABC’s “The View” Thursday, amid cross talk.
...
Conway appeared to suggest Thursday that Trump had in fact spent money in Cuba, even though he ultimately decided not to invest. Under the embargo, it would have been against the law to spend any money on the island at all.
Our choices of the "big two" have come down to "corrupt man" or "corrupt woman"
It's ridiculous.
Just imagine the reaction a Democratic nominee would get for being all buddy-buddy with Putin and conducting business in Communist Cuba.

yeah you can have "corrupt woman" or "corrupt, compulsively lying man who also happens to have a terrifyingly short attention span and massive temper issues"
[editline]29th September 2016[/editline]
Trump has several scandals following him at this point all of which are at least as big as HRC's emails

a blaitantly corrupt man and a woman who everyone assumes is corrupt
hillary has scandals from her work, trump has scandals from his character

It's really down to an intelligent, well experienced pragmatic woman who's a tad shady (allegedly) compared an extremely shady, low intelligence emotional manchild who has no real experience in anything close to leading a country.
I dunno about you guys but I know who I'll rather have.
So he spent money looking to invest into a place on Cuba, but backed out?
Who cares. We shouldn't have an embargo on Cuba in the first place. If it was someone other than Clinton or Trump most FPers would be for it.

Saying Hillary is a "tad" shady is a bit of an understatement.

Trump is a scandal.

Out of the two, I'd rather have Clinton because at least we know we won't be nuking Canada for saying sorry.
That being said, I'd really rather have neither, but with how the US election system works, that won't happen.

yeah man I love when businessmen flagrantly disregard the law
I mean, he's richer than us, why should he have to play by the same rules as us? everyone knows the wealthy should just be allowed to do whatever they want with no repercussions

The irony is he says Hillary is shit because she's "above the law".
He's just as "above the law" as she is.

The issue isn't Cuba. The issue is that Trump displayed blatant disregard for the law when he conducted business in Cuba.
This isn't the only case with him. If it were an otherwise honest businessman we were talking about, I might have overlooked it. Trump isn't honest by any stretch of the imagination. His behavior exhibits a pattern of misconduct, that, taken as a whole, speaks volumes about his character.
Trump is incapable of conducting himself honorably. He is unfit for the presidency.
I, so fucking hate 2016
The irony is he says Hillary is shit because she's "above the law".

of course he is
he's a coddled draft dodging manchild who grew up with a silver spoon in his mouth and regularly gets away with disregarding the law and fucking people over because of the fortune handed down to him by his daddy and his fame

"Breaking the law is okay when it's my candidate."
how could anyone in their right mind possibly look at this narcissistic, thin skinned, petty, vapid, ignorant vulgarian and his history of swindling, hedonistic excess, and callous selfishness and see him as anything less than utterly detestable?
why does anyone like him when he clearly doesn't care about anyone in the entirety of the world but himself?
This isn't even a matter of politics. Clinton is clearly a self interested power hungry aristocrat. But people easily recognize that in her. Why is it so hard for them to do the same with Trump?
Aaaaand Trump just lost his last Hispanic voters. Those Republican Cuban Americans sure are not happy to hear that, especially ones in Florida.

Because he's an outsider and thus anything negative that surfaces related to him is a lie planted by the establishment.
The sad thing is that I don't think this revelation is going to change many of the people who plan to vote for him. They'll see it as either untrue media propaganda or Hillary is still worse.
I just find it terrible that the two main parties have picked some of the worst candidates in history at the same time.

if there's such thing as a War of the Best, then this truly is a War of the Worst

the republicans picked a convincing yet thoroughly detestable and incompetent candidate, and the democrats picked a thoroughly unconvincing, unlikable, relatively competent one
in a perfect world where voters are more capable judges of character and politically literate, this wouldn't even be a contest. But in that world, we'd also probably have a much better selection to begin with.
Remember when we thought 2015 was as low as we could get? Good times....
what if both of them are running so that they won't be charged with crimes?

I second this.
I think it's pretty funny that the people who were jumping with joy when the embargo ended are the same ones trying to slam trump for this. (Not referring to the quoted poster)
Yeah Trump has some nasty scandals but I'd say they're not nearly as bad as the ones Hillary is wrapped up in.
I'm not a Trump man (I actually wanted Dr. Ben Carson) but he had a point in the debate when he said to Hillary, "You've been doing this for 30 years." He's right. If she's as experienced and ideal as everyone says, why has she been a Washington insider, since at least 1993, and yet all of these problems keep getting worse?
I digress. The Cubans are an extremely industrious people with strong entrepreneurial spirit. I'm not sure there is much to be bothered about here. Yes he broke the law, but maybe he didn't know what he was doing was illegal at the time ;) (If you can use that excuse for someone who lied under oath to congress as well as the FBI, I'm sure we can make an exception for someone who lied about a business venture nearly 20 years ago)

Clinton hasn't single handedly solved extremely complex political problems, clearly this means someone with absolutely no political experience who is even stupider than your average American when it comes to international politics is better fit to be president.

this is honestly it, isn't it. this is what it comes down to: it's like realising your code is fucked, you've tried debugging it and stared at it for hours, but it's still not working quite right and you just get the urge to hit it with a hammer. you know it's not going to work, and will make your long term problems much worse, but the urge is still there.
now I understand
