velvet belly lantern shark's glowing underside
[release]Researchers have discovered some sharks can become invisible to their prey by creating an odd optical illusion.

Emitting light from their body, by regulating the photophores underneath the body, the sharks are able to match the light from the sun.
According to researchers from the University of Louvain, this means the already efficient killers don't stand out as silhouettes to their prey - making them even more deadly.
Lead researcher Julien Claes says that about 10 percent of known sharks are able to glow, and that this could also be used to attract a mate.
We've always worried about being attacked by a shark… but after hearing this will now be glancing even more nervously around the bathroom before getting into the tub.

In open water, there is often no place to hide. Some sharks have overcome this problem by making themselves invisible to both prey and predators, according to a new study.
Light trickery permits the optical illusion, described in the current issue of the Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology. The findings represent the first experimental tests of shark luminescence.
Lead author Julien Claes explained to Discovery News that about 50 different shark species, or more than 10 percent of all known sharks, are luminous. This means they can produce and emit light from their bodies

I knew some fish could do this, but never knew sharks could.
:tinfoil:
:coolfish:
never touching water
ever
i wish i could do that
I'm trying to make some witty joke about Sam fisher and Sharks.
Hmm.
That's pretty damn cool.
wow, never swimming in the ocean again.
Sharks defend their title as the most efficient carnivore in existence.
The ocean is pure motherfucking MAGIC.

Fucking Sharks how do they work?
Fucking sharks, how do they work?
EDIT: dammit.
That is way too sick.
Hope you guys realize that a human would easily be able to tell the difference between a fake glow and the actual light.
Mostly if you directly look at it...what with depth perception.
Well, another reason to stay miles from the ocean.

It's used against deep sea predators that have upward looking eyes. The predators can detect silhouettes against the little light coming form the surface, and see just enough to find a meal. Match the light coming from above, and you will be invisible from underneath, the majority of fish that can do this will still be visible from any other side other than the bottom. And to us, we would be able to notice the difference.
Not invisible to us, invisible to potential predators.

But...the thread title says they camouflage to become invisible to their PREY, not predators.
Sharks are badass.

They become invisible to anyone looking up at them who can't tell the difference between artificial light and sunlight.
[editline]10:58PM[/editline]
I should also mention the shark in question only grows a little longer than a foot long, and lives in deep waters. However about 10% of sharks emit light. Don't expect to be running into invisible great whites anytime soon.
OvB tells the truth.
These things are in no way a danger to anyone.

That would make me kill myself
Well makes sense, seems like they just pop out of motherfucking nowhere.
Somewhere, a writer for The Asylum just had a really, really great idea.
Imagine if there are gigantic megalodons all over the ocean, but we don't know because they're invisible. :tinfoil:
bullshit and i have to go to the beach this july.
Never know what hit em...
This just proves that swimming the ocean is equally deadly as swimming in hydrochloric acid.

Well gentlemen, now the question is how do we get it into people.

Well, I'm never going into the ocean.
