A LONG-RUNNING lawsuit over a divorcee's $4 million legal bill was knocked off course today when the judge unexpectedly resigned, saying he was "not coming back" to the case. Supreme Court Judge Robert Lunn announced his retirement, after 29 years on the bench, at a hearing this morning. Since 2010 he has presided over a lawsuit, filed against Donaldson Walsh Lawyers by a divorcee who cannot be named. She claims the firm's $4.12 million bill for its services - part of a combined $36.5 million she and her ex-husband have spent on their acrimonious split - was excessive. Today, counsel for the lawyers asked for a hearing date to further argue the matter, only to be cut off by Judge Lunn. "That will need to be heard before someone else, because I'm not coming back to do it," he said. "I've resigned, today is my last day, I go on 11 weeks long-service leave tonight. "This (case) has already had a lot of twists and turns, and I'm not volunteering to come back to it." Admitted to practice in 1966, Judge Lunn was appointed a Deputy Master of the Supreme Court in 1972. In that role, he was responsible for the administration of pre-trial legal matters, such as subpoenas, in the civil courts. He was named a Master of the Supreme Court in 1984. Judge Lunn is best known for writing the definitive works on the operation of the law in this state - Civil Procedure SA and Criminal Law SA. Known unofficially as the "red Lunn" and the "black Lunn", the volumes are used every day in every court. Today, Judge Lunn said his career would have finished late next year due to the mandatory judicial retirement age of 70. "After 29 years as a Master and a judge, I would only have had nine months left (after my leave) if I did not resign," he said. "I decided now was the time to go, and the rest of the Bar can amuse itself." He said the $4 million divorce bill case would have to be heard by his yet-to-be-named successor. However, that meant adjourning the case until March to allow for preparation time - and for the lawyers involved in the case to return from their Christmas holidays. Judge Lunn ordered the parties file any further documentation by next month.
http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/south-australia/im-out-judge-walks-away-from-epic-case/story-e6frea83-1226522655105 I wouldn't even want to deal with such an annoying case to begin with
2 years. Pft. My parent's divorce case took upwards of 5 years to be fully settled, and both sides are still bickering about things.
Wow.
"I decided now was the time to go, and the rest of the Bar can amuse itself."
That's some nice self-censoring and substituition there
2 years. Pft. My parent's divorce case took upwards of 5 years to be fully settled, and both sides are still bickering about things.
I hope your future marriage is more meaningful than your parents, my friend.
I hope your future marriage is more meaningful than your parents, my friend.
Here, here. As the kid of divorced parents (I'm sure there are a lot of us here), I hope to never go through something like that.
2 years. Pft. My parent's divorce case took upwards of 5 years to be fully settled, and both sides are still bickering about things.
Fuck, by year 5 the only people that stand to make a single goddamn thing are lawyers.
I hope your future marriage is more meaningful than your parents, my friend.
How was theirs not meaningful? It resulted in child I'm fairly sure that's meaningful. I can see you saying you hope it's more pleasant though.
2 years. Pft. At the end my mom decided "fuck it, you can have the time with the kids that you want." My dad decided to turn it down after 6 years.
Snip, even though I'm pretty sure it's legal anyway my parents were awesome
2 years. Pft. My parent's divorce case took upwards of 5 years to be fully settled, and both sides are still bickering about things.
10 years and counting over here buddy, I know how you feel.
"I decided now was the time to go, and the rest of the Bar can amuse itself."
What a fucking champ.
$36.5 million why whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
$36.5 million why whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
Because there are these things called "people", and these "people" are fucking morons
$36.5 million why whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
I find it funny that they hate each other so much, they'll sink tens of millions into paying professionals to argue with each other on their behalf.
-snip-
don't blame him, I was called up for 2 weeks jury service a while ago, did two cases, they're interesting at first but it got so bloody tedious
don't blame him, I was called up for 2 weeks jury service a while ago, did two cases, they're interesting at first but it got so bloody tedious
What sort of cases? (I expect some you might not be allowed to talk about...)
Can talk about it now it's done and dusted. Some dude forging coins and a stroppy chav claiming her step dad raped her because he didn't let her see her boyfriend
2 years. Pft. My parent's divorce case took upwards of 5 years to be fully settled, and both sides are still bickering about things.
My parents were divorced in 2003 and it still isn't settled. My mum threatens court almost every week.
My parents divorce took less than 6 months and they managed to come to an agreement rather than have the court force one. They chose to have me and my bro 50/50. Spent one week at mums, one week at dads, rinse and repeat.
