NEW ORLEANS (AP) — BP PLC says it will get rid of some of the oil being recaptured from a spill in the Gulf of Mexico by burning it off.
BP spokesman Max McGahan told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the company will process some of the flow by sending it to a burner that turns it into a combustible fog and ignites it.
McGahan says the rig carrying the burner will be moved away from the main leak site so flames and heat do not endanger other vessels.
BP spokesman Robert Wine says the company will also boost capacity by bringing in a floating platform it believes can process most of the flow. He didn't know when it would arrive.
The current equipment being used at the surface to collect the spilled oil is believed to be nearing its daily capacity.

It's not uncommon to do this, and i think they started already in some areas already.
Anyone have some youtube videos of these underwater fires?

Happens all the time man, not really huge news.

Yeah, but the typical burnoff is methane, and I just felt like posting this as an small, slow news day update.
They're pumping the stuff they are collecting from the little cap they put on through the burn off tower on the Deepwater Discovery.

not the Deepwater Discovery, but you get the idea.
Will cook the fish.. It's brilliant.

No it wouldn't Not even a fire on the surface would effect fish that much. Their just going to burn it through the burn off tower, which thousands of rigs have been doing every day for years.
That reminds me that I still don't understand why we burn the natural gas that we pump out via offshore rigs. Is there not a good way to utilize it? From my ignorant point of view it looks like a waste.

They have Natural Gas rigs too. My uncle owns a company that operates many rigs. He almost went under because of the drilling ban actually.

I know they do. I'm just confused as to why they don't have it set up to where they can get both without having to burn one. Surely it can be done.

Along with the natural gas, you have extremely toxic vapors such as methane and sulfides which are extremely dangerous to ship and release into the environment. Methane is a proven and unpredictable greenhouse gas, and sulfides tend to suffocate things. And this renders the toxins safe at the cost of burning a fuel along with it.

They do.(at least i'm pretty sure they do) Rigs that harvest Oil get some natural gas which they sell to natural gas companies, rigs that harvest natural gas get some oil which they sell to oil companies. They burn off the shit like methane which can be bad if it builds up. The blowout that blew up the Deepwater Horizon was a mix of oil, methane, natural gas and some other shit. If there's any mixture you should keep away from fire, it was that one.

Ah thanks!
Surprised they didn't start doing this.

Are you the president of the Department of Redudancy Department?
Surprised they didn't start doing this.
It was the original plan to do exactly this, it was approved by Congress years ago to be used in the event that something like this happened. Of course, it being the government they didn't actually deliver on it.
BP is made of retards.
"We can handle it!"
No they can't...
They are only human.
What's next, dropping a suitcase full of Plutonium into the ocean?
