• Congress passes Guantanamo bill
The Senate vote, which follows approval in the House last week, clears one of the hurdles facing President Barack Obama as he seeks to close Guantanamo. But the measure does not allow those convicted to be imprisoned in the US nor permit those cleared to stay. Mr Obama has set a 22 January deadline for closing the detention centre. More than 220 inmates are still held at the Guantanamo camp which was opened after the 11 September attacks. The bill, which must now be signed into law by President Obama, was passed by 79 to 19 votes in the Senate as part of a larger budget bill for the Department of Homeland Security. The US justice department has said that it intends to decide by mid-November which detainees will stand trial and what kind of court they will face. Under the terms of the bill, Congress must be provided with a detailed assessment of the security risk involved before a detainee can be brought to the US. The administration must also give 15 days' notice of any transfer. Some Republicans have objected to plans to hold Guantanamo detainees in US prisons, arguing that they do not deserve the protections afforded under US law. "There is too much at stake to grant the unprecedented benefit of our legal system's complex procedural safeguards to foreign nationals who were captured outside the United States during a time of war," said Senator Saxby Chambliss during the debate. "Guantanamo must be closed because it's become a recruiting tool for al-Qaeda and other terrorist," Senator Dick Durbin said. Under the bill, those convicted will not be able to serve their sentences in US prisons, and those cleared will not be allowed to stay, even when no other country will accept them. That matter is to be decided by future legislation or by the Supreme Court - which has announced it will hear an appeal by a group of Chinese ethnic Uighurs, who are still being held at Guantanamo despite being deemed to pose no risk. Their lawyers argue that they should be allowed to resettle in the US rather than China, where as ethnic Muslim Uighurs they would be subjected to persecution. Non us Citizens from other countries, being tried on US Soil, for crimes against Humanity, and America, thats not really US's Job, it will be too easy on them. To be honest, if your planning to kill 1000 people by blowing yourself up, then you should be shot.
I'm not too keen on this, but doesn't Guantanamo torture their prisoners? (Again, I've never lived in USA and I don't know anything)
I'm not too keen on this, but doesn't Guantanamo torture their prisoners? "Human Rights"... What Human rights do people like that deserve? The right to live? Maybe, The right to get away with it? No Fucking Way.
obamas fucking everything up
"Human Rights"... What Human rights do people like that deserve? The right to live? Maybe, The right to get away with it? Innocent people have been held in Guantanamo Bay simply due to the fear and xenophobia that has gripped America since the September 11th attacks.
what a left wing thing to say

Everyone in there is completely innocent because America doesn't like them. We simply round up a bunch of people and put them there for the hell of it. :downs:
Our prison system was good enough for Tim McVeigh, I don't see what's so much more dangerous about these people. It's about bloody time we made an effort at sorting through the people we've illegally detained for eight years and getting some trials going.
Mr Obama has set a 22 January deadline for closing the detention centre. Because that's bad right? What with the whole "human rights abuse and torture" thing they have going.
Finally Obama does something useful.
Yes, this is true. Everyone in there is completely innocent because America doesn't like them. No one can deny that after 9/11, America's Law Enforcement were more keen to imprison people who looked like a threat; even if they in reality were not. Not that this doesn't happen anywhere else, it just happened more after 9/11.
another bill American citizens can't afford

Oh you can't treat this guy unfairly, he has rights as a human. Lady he cut a 12 year old girl's head off because she wasn't covering up her face with a cloth, what do you care if we make him feel like he's drowning, even though he isn't and won't, when the Info this technique gets will save Lives But you shouldn't take it from me, I'd gladly string up 30 naked burnt extremists corpses from a bridge to save one Innocent life

We should export their trials to Saudi Arabia, where they sentenced a man to 5 years in prison and 1000 lashes just for bragging about sex. :buddy:

Good, guantanamo bay should never have existed. It's a torture camp that takes innocent people in without a fair trial, locks them away and tortures them in a way that defies even their most basic human rights. It needs to go, and if Obama closes it he will be doing the right thing. [editline]04:27PM[/editline]
Americans are too squimish any more. Something around 100 people were charged with piracy, sentenced to death, and carried out by firing squad all with in a week. Fucking finally. Guantanamo pretty much stood for human rights abuses. Alright, here's the thing. 1)Coating a knife/bullet in pork doesn't make sense. It's just like how Jews don't eat pork (I think). If somone forces you like at gunpoint or tricks you and says its something else (and you really believe its something else) then its ok 2) Saudi Arabia would execute the Terrorists. Actually, Saudi Arabia had its own fair share of Terrorist Attacks on themselves. 3)Not everyone in guantanamo is guilty of doing whatever.
Except they might not have even done anything.
But water boarding doesn't harm the person in any way. Might scare them a bit into feeling like they're drowning, but it doesn't have any injuries to them.

Dr. Allen Keller, the director of the Bellevue/N.Y.U. Program for Survivors of Torture, has treated "a number of people" who had been subjected to forms of near-asphyxiation, including waterboarding. In an interview for The New Yorker states, "[He] argued that it was indeed torture, 'Some victims were still traumatized years later', he said. One patient couldn't take showers, and panicked when it rained. 'The fear of being killed is a terrifying experience', he said".[7] Keller also stated in his testimony before the Senate that "water-boarding or mock drowning, where a prisoner is bound to an inclined board and water is poured over their face, inducing a terrifying fear of drowning clearly can result in immediate and long-term health consequences. As the prisoner gags and chokes, the terror of imminent death is pervasive, with all of the physiologic and psychological responses expected, including an intense stress response, manifested by tachycardia (rapid heart beat) and gasping for breath. There is a real risk of death from actually drowning or suffering a heart attack or damage to the lungs from inhalation of water. Long term effects include panic attacks, depression and PTSD. I remind you of the patient I described earlier who would panic and gasp for breath whenever it rained even years after his abuse".
http://intelligence.senate.gov/070925/akeller.pdf#page=6 No physical injuries my ass. Psychological trauma and the chance of heart attack and damage to lungs. http://waterboarding.org/firsthand Read all of those as well.
Dude, drowning has got to be the worst possible way to die. It hurts so fucking much . . .
