In 2010, the President hosted the first-ever White House Science Fair.

Some of America’s brightest students visited the White House today as President Obama hosted his sixth and final science fair, an event created to recognize the work of the next generation of scientists, engineers and mathematicians.
"Some of the best moments that I have had as president have involved science and our annual science fair," Obama said after viewing the exhibits at White House. He discussed the multiple robots he has seen at previous events and recalled how each year brings new findings, including the time he "shot marshmallows out of a cannon."
Obama heralded the projects prepared by the more than 130 participants -- who came from elementary, middle and high schools -- and said he saw ingenuity, curiosity and teamwork involved in what each of the students prepared. Participants also were acknowledged for leadership in education, business and the nonprofit world.
"The only problem with the science fair is it makes me feel inadequate," Obama quipped.
15 days late but find it necessary to highlight one of Obama's awesome initiatives.
I never even knew about this.
This better be a thing that keeps on going
Why isn't this a publicized thing.
Fucking politics, can't ever highlight nice little things like this. It must suck dick being a politician knowing that anything nice you do will never be recognized outside of a tiny sphere of the population.
Obama established the tradition of the White House Science Fair in 2010 to celebrate the nation’s top young innovators. He has emphasized science education is key to "what makes America the greatest country on Earth" and often talks about his wonder of science and technology, making his final fair a bit of a bittersweet moment.
Makes you wonder what else Obama has done we don't know about.
girl from my school was invited there

quoting this so you cant fix it if it's a mistake
Things like this and the fireside chats on youtube are pretty awesome. Obama is a very cool guy regardless of whether or not you like his politics.
Can't wait for the awkward Hillary Clinton science fairs
Congress should host this sort of thing too because Lord knows they need to realise that even a 12 year old has more scientific knowledge than some of the people in congress

That works both ways, i'm sure there's a lot of good he's actually done that the media hasn't bothered reporting on, as much as there may be bad.

really need to go there
I'm really jealous, because I went to a science fair a few years ago with my little brother and our special guest was Stephen Harper. I wasn't happy at all that day.
Kid actually got a (potato) gun into the whitehouse.

Not really. The media jumps on Obama the femtosecond they get the chance.

I'm betting you they are only reporting on this now that Obama isn't stuck as president anymore.
They can say nice stuff about him now instead of downright stupid shit for more views.
The news has mentioned the White House Science Fair literally every year it's run. Pay attention.

They report this every year, it's just that it's nothing more than a fluf piece in terms of Washington politics. Last year for example while this was going on, actual scientists were fighting off conservative skepticism and a political takedown of the NIH and other research funding
Man I love Obama, I might not agree with his policies 100% but he is a great leader.
Adam Savage was there and filmed this pretty interesting vid:
