Buried within the “Voice Recognition” section of the SmartTV's Privacy Policy is a stipulation warning users that their voice commands will be converted to text and ultimately used to improve the voice command features. It's one of the most popular features on the SmartTV, but the revelation that the voice recognition program is quietly monitoring conversations uttered within earshot of the living room could make customers think twice before using the device to change the channel or browse through movies by speaking. “Please be aware that if your spoken words include personal or other sensitive information, that information will be among the data captured and transmitted to a third party through your use of Voice Recognition,” the policy states. “You may disable Voice Recognition data collection at any time by visiting the 'settings' menu. However, this may prevent you from using all of the Voice Recognition features.” A spokesperson for Samsung told the Daily Beast Friday that the company adheres to all industry standards and prevents the unauthorized collection or use of user data. The company also stressed that the Voice Recognition can be turned off, though privacy advocates have long expressed concern that customers might not even realize their words are being saved in the first place. Corynne McSherry, the intellectual property director at the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) told the Daily Beast customers could conceivably want to know more about exactly who has access to their information. “If I were the customer, I might like to know who that third party was, and I'd definitely like to know whether my words were being transmitted in a secure form,” she said.
Im ok with this. I got nothing to hide.
"Samsung SmartTV, please turn on my clopper porn."
Note to self do not buy any new tech outside of desktop PC.
Note to self do not buy any new tech outside of desktop PC.
NSA records your screen, voice, cam, browsing habits and everything.
It's not for surveillance though, just for use in the algorithm that controls the voice recognition and improves its accuracy. The only thing to be worried about is that it could save the data and send it to someone else, in theory.
SmartTVs suck, they randomly start tracking my hands when they're by my side and can never understand my brummie accent
Im ok with this. I got nothing to hide.
You shouldn't be. They are trying to give out people's personal info without them knowing. Yes, you CAN disable it, but it really should be an opt-in thing, not an opt-out. Or that some nosy employee of a company that receives the data decides to listen in on it. Or sell it. Or that someone hacks them and records the data they get.
I wonder if the XBone and the SmartTV would get in fights over who gets talked too the most.

Good thing i still have my analog cable tv
SmartTVs are great. They are just like ordinary TVs except they have software that crashes.
It's okay. Nobody can afford one, anyways.
Goddammit, I've had sex in the living room at my apartment in front of my Smart TV multiple times. Regardless if you have something to hide or not, it's a fucking invasion of privacy and they should have made it crystal clear that this was happening before you bought the TV. Kinda something that most people would probably wanna know.
Does your TV have voice recognition (enabled)? If not, you're in the clear. Probably. [editline]8th February 2015[/editline]
It's okay. Nobody can afford one, anyways.
It's not 2005 anymore. These days it's hard to get a 32" and up HDTV that doesn't connect to the internet.
Mine was $400 and it's 42 inches. It was on sale, but still, if people can afford PS4s and Xbox Ones, they can certainly afford one of these.
Four hundred dollars?! I'd be lucky if I'd come across a decent bog standard small TV for well over $400. At least there's no point in moving. An average TV watcher barely gets 30 channels, anyways. And no HD, either.
Doesn't Google keyboard do this for predictive typing, swipe, and spell check?
Pretty much any language-recognition software does this. The dubious part is the third party that receives it in the end, not the monitoring itself.
I guess I need to sit in front of my TV with my Schlong hanging out at all times now just in case someone is watching.
I think they're a great IDEA, I just think they have a few years before they become up to snuff with what they should be.
I don't get how my 500€ TV takes ages to load YouTube and can't even stream Twitch while also crashing and freezing frequently while my 35€ Chromecast can start any app in a few seconds and hasn't crashed or frozen a single time while also supporting far more apps.
So they record me fapping? Anyways, I've disabled that shit straight from the beginning.
Source: http://www.ibtimes.com/samsung-smarttvs-are-recording-your-conversations-watching-your-movements-1808936
This has been known for ages and it's something they explicitly state in the manual more then once. We have 3 of those tvs around the house and we've sharpied over the camera and disabled voice recognition. It's not like some random scandal just got revealed. Please note that any device with a microphone or camera can be used to spy on you at all times including your laptop/phone.

WTF do I need a smart TV for :v:
[img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/3zzxmZo.jpg[/img_thumb] Oh shit. Oh well, who uses voice recognition anyway. Pushing a button is better in every way. Faster, Works every time, and you don't look like a skitzophrenic
For me, at least, it's something that is for when you have too much money on your hands. [editline]8th February 2015[/editline] bitch broke my automerge
I think they're a great IDEA, I just think they have a few years before they become up to snuff with what they should be.
Having basically a computer embedded in the TV sounds a bit pointless imo when there exists stuff like Chromecast, Raspberry Pi, etc.
Literal 1984's TeleScreen.
regretting fucking in front of the tv
Having basically a computer embedded in the TV sounds a bit pointless imo when there exists stuff like Chromecast, Raspberry Pi, etc.
Yeah it's for people that don't have that and/or want the convenience of being able to put on YouTube from the same interface they use to switch on Millionaire. I personally use my TV exclusively as a monitor for my gaming PC and XBMC, but I can see why many people would want that functionality.
Smart TVs are actually pretty useful for those of us who just want a television for Netflix or YouTube without the need to actually buy and install something extra alongside it (game consoles, etc.).
