Some ignorant people might think that intelligence is the same thing as knowledge or that intelligence can be changed by more than a very tiny and insignificant amount. (Only one or two types of intelligence can be changed, but the change would be totally insignificant)
Intelligence is very heritable. You're either born intelligent or not. There is NO WAY you can become intelligent if you were born normal or stupid, even if you read lots of books every day or compose puzzles.
Intelligent people CAN get bad grades or even fail school if they don't work enough.
About 30-15% of population also shows significant discrepancies in their abilities.
People who belong to this group might fail math but be very good at languages, or be very bad at mental problem solving but be good at other things, and so on.
The main discrepancy types are
-Verbal and Performance - one can do very well at verbal problems but fail non-verbal ones and the other way around.
-Working memory - this one is extremely common. With this discrepancy, the person is question can't hold much information in his head at a time, concentrate or follow instructions well. He/she might do well at math-related areas and loose things all the time, while being very intelligent at others.
-Processing speed - processing speed is basically how fast you do things. Some intelligent people might be slow but be able to solve very complex problems.
The best way to measure intelligence is through official IQ testing. Shity online IQ tests DO NOT measure your intelligence in any way. The ability they generally measure is working memory index which is almost uncorrelated with the general intelligence. I personally failed most of the online IQ tests, but have been assigned to a gifted program at school due to my high officially tested IQ.
What to expect on a real IQ test?
Real IQ tests generally measure these abilities:

The Verbal Comprehension Index includes four tests:
* Similarities: Abstract verbal reasoning (e.g., "In what way are an apple and a pear alike?")
* Vocabulary: The degree to which one has learned, been able to comprehend and verbally express vocabulary (e.g., "What is a guitar?")
* Information : Degree of general information acquired from culture (e.g., "Who is the president of Russia?")
* Comprehension [Supplemental]: Ability to deal with abstract social conventions, rules and expressions (e.g., "What does Kill 2 birds with 1 stone metaphorically mean?")
The Perceptual Reasoning Index comprises five tests
* Block Design: Spatial perception, visual abstract processing & problem solving
* Matrix Reasoning: Nonverbal abstract problem solving, inductive reasoning, spatial reasoning
* Visual Puzzles: non-verbal reasoning
* Picture Completion [Supplemental]: Ability to quickly perceive visual details
* Figure Weights [Supplemental]: quantitative and analogical reasoning
The Working Memory Index is obtained from three tests
* Digit span: attention, concentration, mental control (e.g., Repeat the numbers 1-2-3 in reverse sequence)
* Arithmetic: Concentration while manipulating mental mathematical problems (e.g., "How many 45-cent stamps can you buy for a dollar?")
* Letter-Number Sequencing [Supplemental]: attention and working memory (e.g., Repeat the sequence Q-1-B-3-J-2, but place the numbers in numerical order and then the letters in alphabetical order)
The Processing Speed Index includes three tests
* Symbol Search: Visual perception, speed
* Coding: Visual-motor coordination, motor and mental speed
* Cancellation [Supplemental]: visual-perceptual speed
If you do well on one subjects and fail at others IQ testing will account for that and generate your IQ score on your best ability.

Tl;DR
Edit:
Yeh whatever I would love to have an IQ test.

You posted this 5 seconds after I posted the thread.
At its core, we can define intelligence as the capacity for goal-directed, adaptive behavior.
This thread is shit
There is NO WAY you can become intelligent if you were born normal or stupid
Implying intelligence is abnormal/super human.
go get laid op
IMO intelligence is how well can you use the knowledge you posses

I'm talking about the scientific definitions of intelligence. (The most correct ones)
It isn't like your opinion matters when it comes to scientific theories.
You need to prove them WRONG first.
OP obviously thinks he has a really IQ and wants to make everyone of facepunch feel below him =(

A theory at its core is an idea.
You cannot prove a theory, a theory which is proven is a fact.
At its core, we can define intelligence as the capacity for goal-directed, adaptive behavior.
It has already been defined by the branches of science which studies it - psychology and neurophysiology.
I had my IQ tested in 8th grade or so, I felt like the test was poorly conducted due to lack of control in the environment. (I still received a high score, if thats what you would call it.)
I'm going to disagree here. Test or no test society can call you smart or not.
A theory at its core is an idea.

A theory explains scientific observations. It can be refuted. However, the intelligence theory has NOT BEEN refuted, and it's the most detailed theory out there. Go make a more detailed and accurate theory than the current one.
A theory explains scientific observations. It can be refuted. However, the intelligence theory has NOT BEEN refuted.
Regardless a theory is still a theory.
Why are you trying to glorify it? It's not a fact until it has been proven.
Oh dear god. I hate people who believe intelligence is measured purely by IQ. No, just no. Intelligence believe it or not is an umbrella term, it's not just the basic logical aspects that determine intelligence.
Basically: Durrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Intelligence is the ability to comprehend, understand and profit from experience, not just IQ.
I really want an IQ test so bad but I am not sure/can't be bothered to find out how you get them.
Also lovin OP rating all the negative comments dumb
check it out.
It has already been defined by the branches of science which studies it - psychology and neurophysiology.
I got that definition from a psychology glossary.
I've got a 175 IQ, but you dont see me waving my dick around do you.
Regardless a theory is still a theory.

It's the most detailed theory out there, as well as the most accurate one.
I've got a 175 IQ, but you dont see me waving my dick around do you.
That wouldn't be very smart now would it?
You're either born intelligent or not. There is NO WAY you can become intelligent if you were born normal or stupid, even if you read lots of books every day or compose puzzles.
What the fuck? Where did you hear this from? NO ONE is born "intelligent."
Someone that will make a pun after someone has said something is intelligent, because they've comprehended what's been said, understood what's been said very quickly. Then some people laugh and then you profit from that experience.
IQ = How quickly you learn.
What the fuck? Where did you hear this from? NO ONE is born "intelligent."
The most accurate and detailed intelligence theory out there.
I've got a 175 IQ, but you dont see me waving my dick around do you.
You scored a 175 on an internet test.
It's the most detailed theory out there, as well as the most accurate one.
You sure about that?
I don't think you used much intelligence on that one.
Refer to string theory.
IQ = How quickly you learn.
Not only and not necessary.
