The Courier Mail’s report on a sickening crime has angered many readers with a shockingly transphobic “she male” headline on its front page today. The Brisbane-based tabloid paper is reporting on Indonesian trans woman Mayang Prasetyo’s death – the sex worker was reportedly murdered and “cooked” by her husband, who was also found dead. You can see the report here. But of all the stigmatising and dehumanising phrases often used by tabloids to describe transgender people, “she male” is the worst – and that’s the phrase screaming from the front page of the newspaper today. Inside, the story is headlined as ‘Ladyboy and the butcher’, again drawing sensationalist attention to the victim’s gender identity. The paper’s ill treatment of the recently-deceased trans person has ignited widespread anger, with hundreds of online commenters blasting the headline and story. “Disgusting that you are pandering her gender identity and occupation as a bigger headline and therefore problem than the fact that she wad brutally murdered by her husband,” agreed another commenter. Members of the Brisbane trans community are now asking for an apology from the Courier Mail’s editor, and demand that future articles about transpeople adhere to the newspaper’s own Code of Conduct, which states: “Do not make pejorative reference to a person’s race, nationality, colour, religion, marital status, sex, sexual preferences, age, or physical or mental capacity. No details of a person’s race, nationality, colour, religion, marital status, sex, sexual preferences, age, or physical or mental incapacity should be included in a report unless they are relevant.” http://www.samesame.com.au/news/11446/Courier-Mail-slurs-slain-trans-woman-with-she-male-headline
Media Watch is going to have a fucking field day with this
man this is fucked lol. i get the 'monster chef' bit is a lame little pun but how is the shemale bit anything but just crass horseshit?
Facepunch is going to have a field day with this. Can't wait how offended everybody is :v: Yet, the explanation is so simple, it's the newspaper version of clickbait.
How do you fuck up so badly
Facepunch is going to have a field day with this. Can't wait how offended everybody is :v: Yet, the explanation is so simple, it's the newspaper version of clickbait.
But it goes against News Corps/Courier Mail's CoC
“Do not make pejorative reference to a person’s race, nationality, colour, religion, marital status, sex, sexual preferences, age, or physical or mental capacity. How do you even write this down and get your whole, professional editing team to think "yep, this is a cool idea"? Is this even real?
Facepunch is going to have a field day with this. Can't wait how offended everybody is :v: Yet, the explanation is so simple, it's the newspaper version of clickbait.
Pretty much this, clickbait son

Not to forget as you said they violated their own Code of Conduct
Whoever thought this would be a good idea deserves to be fired.
How do you even write this down and get your whole, professional editing team to think "yep, this is a cool idea"? Is this even real?
By being a tabloid?
Have to admit I giggled a little.
The Press Council can only do so much, if anything perhaps the ACMA could get involved
Which is unlikely because of the current government shares the same views as the Courier Mail / News Corp
Facepunch is going to have a field day with this. Can't wait how offended everybody is :v: Yet, the explanation is so simple, it's the newspaper version of clickbait.
Apparently it's okay to belittle people as long as you're only doing it for attention.
Apparently it's okay to belittle people as long as you're only doing it for attention.
What are you gonna do? No one can stop the media because there are enough people interested in this kind of "journalism". Everybody here knows this is wrong but it's always the same. Outrageous news get posted and people start posting how wrong this is. This is no discussion. More like constant whining. It's how the media works, why get all worked up about things you can't change in the slightest? As long as you just read the article here on FP and don't give website views you are atleast doing something but that's pretty much all you can do from sitting in front of the PC, the rest is whining.

Even the family back in Indonesia believe that was uncalled for and that the Courier Mail crossed the line in ridiculing a victim of murder There's already a petition* that has garnered 12,692 signatures calling for the Courier Mail to publicly apologise to both the public & the family *Petition link: https://www.change.org/p/the-courier-mail-r-brennan-t-chamberlin-k-mckenna-t-snowdon-publicly-apologise-for-articles-relating-to-mayang-prasetyo-we-request-that-future-articles-relating-to-the-transgender-and-sex-worker-communities-align-with-your-code-of-conduct
oh god there's a petition about this? Oh boy that'll really change the daily mail. It was a dick movie by the daily mail but a petition won't really do squat at all. It'll bring attention to this topic yes, but i doubt any change at all will actually happen from an online petition like this.
oh god there's a petition about this? Oh boy that'll really change the daily mail.
This isn't the daily mail mate, the courier mail
This isn't the daily mail mate, the courier mail
Simple mistake, wasn't paying as close attention when typing. [editline]7th October 2014[/editline]
By being a tabloid?
This is actually a point, this is a tabloid after all and they pretty much seek to create drama.
How do I feel this is somewhat expected coming from a man who has the ins with Fox News (Rupert Murdoch)
Have to admit I giggled a little.
I giggled for the wrong reasons - mainly at how absolutely terrible the magazine must be to think this is a good idea.
This isn't the daily mail mate, the courier mail
I can see how people would make that mistake, they're both awful publications.
Ugh. She died in a really gruesome way and their first thoughts are "let's make fun of her for being trans!!" I hope by the time I die this attitude is gone. I'd hate to be on the local news paper as "a shemale died last night" :/
this is why I love australian tabloid papers, with their glorious provoking titles that pisses everyone off

Like this is a tabloid doing what tabloids do. The only reason this is receiving more negativity is because it has to do with a trans human right now which is a hot topic.
Seems like typical gutterpress journalism to me, nothing new. Written by those with little to no integrity for people with little to no intelligence.
It's a tabloid mate. Tabloids are literally only there to cause sensationalized drama
I wouldn't limit the drama to the tabloid, Murdoch's way of Australian media is pretty shit Enjoy Shit such as propaganda (Alternate Version) [t]http://i.imgur.com/XscpFpK.jpg[/t]
this is why I love australian tabloid papers, with their glorious provoking titles that pisses everyone off
This is much different than what we've seen before when it comes to provoking. They literally have taken any sort of humanity she had and stepped on it with this fucking garbo headline. It's garbage journalism at its finest and News Corp likes to proudly state that There is literally nothing funny about this headline, it's absolutely fucking horrendous and I hope those two get the sack which probably won't happen. Instead they'll settle with paid leave or something ridiculous.
I like how they make the transgender person more of the 'thing' than the fucking murderer.
Come on combine, you can be better than that This is about a tabloid newspaper that trashes the dignity & respect of someone who's just been brutally murdered by the person they love just because of the fact they are a sex worker (which is a legal industry in Queensland) and that they are a transgender person. It's not even a fucking newspaper, Tabloids are shit, no better than the magazines who focus on nothing but celebrety news or bullshit like that. Isn't that kind of the point of tabloids? Being as offensive and outrageous as possible? Yes? Why are you complaining then? Why not post a news article about this particular event which is actually informative instead of stupid clickbait? Why post Tabloid articles at all, Facepunch seems to hate their way of conveying information? Do you get what I am talking about? This is counter-productive and achieves nothing but enrage all of you to the point where the original discussion doesn't even START. It gets drowned in your whining. The petition made me laugh though so that's something. Please don't tell me clicking a button on a website will change the ways of a major "news" outlett. That's why it's so predictable which threads turn into shitfests yet these are always the ones with shitloads of posts. You guys love being offended :v: that's why you keep posting these kinda things. I don't know why you do that though. If you'd actually wanted to help these people you'd do something but you don't. You whine on an internet forum about Tabloid Articles and that makes no sense at all to me. Does it make you feel better/superior or is it something like a hobby? [editline]7th October 2014[/editline]
Seems like typical gutterpress journalism to me, nothing new.
