The outspoken Singaporean teenager who insulted the country's founding leader, Lee Kuan Yew, in an expletive-ridden YouTube video following his death has had his day in court.Following a brief trial, 16-year-old blogger Amos Yee was found guilty Tuesday of distributing an obscene image of Lee Kuan Yew, who died in March at age 91. Yee was also convicted of hurting the feelings of Christians, whom he was accused of broadly disparaging in the video. The image Yee posted online features a photo of Lee Kuan Yew's face superimposed onto a cartoon drawing of a man in a wheelbarrow sexual position with a woman bearing the face of former UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Prosecutors spared Yee from being found guilty of a third charge of verbally insulting and abusing the former Singaporean leader in the video under the country's Protection from Harassment Act. Lee presided over the wealthy city-state's development for 31 years and was beloved by many Singaporeans, but Yee's video pointedly criticized him for being autocratic, and highlighted what he saw as inequity, fear, and repression in the country. Though the video was made private shortly after his arrest, it has been re-uploaded by other YouTube users and viewed hundreds of thousands of times.
https://news.vice.com/article/singapore-teen-amos-yee-guilty-of-insulting-christians-posting-lewd-cartoon-of-late-pm
Singapore teen blogger Amos Yee gave mainstream media the metaphorical middle finger on Wednesday.Yee wrote on his Facebook page at 2:40pm on Wednesday that he was willing to meet with reporters and answer their questions if they could catch him coming out of the Pasir Panjang MRT station between 3 to 4 p.m. That time, he said, would be before a meeting he had arranged at 7pm with a visual artist, “a humble fellow by the name of Dick Ow”. Yee gave incentive for reporters to rise to the bait when he said he would clear the air about what happened in prison, his future plans “to f--- with the government”, and even reveal how his ex-bailor Vincent Law “molested me.” In a second post at 9:41pm the same day, the potty-mouthed 16-year-old wrote that his earlier post was meant to troll the media. “Yeah… I think some people found out by now… I did, in fact, make use of the voracious desire of the reporters, to f--- with the mainstream media,” he said. “I think it’s pretty obvious when I have arranged a meeting with a person named ‘Dick Ow’…,” he said. He also added, “And Vincent Law didn’t really molest me, haha. Though he is immensely creepy. I’ll save the specific details for another time.” He noted that he “manipulated the press to indulge in the thoroughly exhausting experience of waiting in Pasir Panjang fruitlessly for several hours, which they did with their quote unquote ‘diligence’.” Mainstream media did appear to fall for Yee's ruse. An AsiaOne report noted that "up until 5.15pm, there was no sign of the teenager" at the Pasir Panjang MRT station. Similarly, a Channel NewsAsia report said Yee was "nowhere to be seen" at the station at 5pm.
https://sg.news.yahoo.com/gotcha--amos-yee-taunts-mainstream-media-in-facebook-posts-233748296.html In the second article, it mentions that he made the press wait for him, and in the end didn't show up. Well, my dad was reporting on this particular case. This dickwad told my dad and his colleagues he will be there, and my dad waited about 5 GODDAMN HOURS for this kid to turn up. My dad then tell me that he was at another place having lunch.
sounds like he put your dad on a ruse cruise
Well, he didn't know shit, its not like he has a choice either, the company said 'Go there' and he does as he was told.
Well this kid scored well on the douche exams.
the kid is an idiot but this makes singapores laws seem really dumb too. convicted of insulting christians and drawing lewd images???
the kid is an idiot but this makes singapores laws seem really dumb too. convicted of insulting christians and drawing lewd images???
That's Singapore for ya
Your poor dad had to wait 5 hours for someone being convicted of bullshit offences? I know who I feel sorry for more, and it's not your dad.
Actually was it the comment on the PM that sparked this? I deserve a bad reading rating. But seriously even with those charges you don't need to act like a little twat
Even with those charges? Yeah when your government sends you to PRISON for drawing a dick on Obama's face please come talk to me. EDIT: How to get three weeks in a prison as a 16 year old where actual murderers, rapists, etc are held.
Yee was also convicted of hurting the feelings of Christians
Jesus christ what the hell is wrong with singapore
Oh boohoo he had to wait a few hours to interview someone who's being convicted of a super petty offense. Jesus christ what the hell is wrong with singapore
Look, I agree that the charge he is facing is ridiculous, but it doesn't stop me from thinking he's a twat for making my Dad and his pals wait. Also, he made the dumb move of calling his bailor a molester, and now he's gonna face more charges.
Well, he didn't know shit, its not like he has a choice either, the company said 'Go there' and he does as he was told.
Are seriously you expecting sympathy for your dad because some one is expressing anger over the lack of basic human rights in your country? Did he not get paid or something? Who cares if he waited around. It's just his job.
As much as I believe the charges are dumb and go against basic human rights, this kid is almost as much of an idiot for how he's been acting in the aftermath of his arrest.
I do, because his health is bloody deteriorating.
Was there no where to sit where he was? How is it different than him just normally working except less actual work?
if i could get sent someplace to not work for 5 hours and still get paid i'd probably take it tbh
the kid is an idiot but this makes singapores laws seem really dumb too. convicted of insulting christians and drawing lewd images???
Porn is illegal in Singapore sadly.
It's hilarious, because thanks to how much they're trying to shut up this little shit, everyone realizes how shitty Singapore is. Singapore's PR is being ruined by a 13 year old internet nerd.
Nice freedom of speech singapore lmfao
Nice freedom of speech singapore lmfao
As the Singaporeans here have pointed out before: there is no such thing in Singapore. Kid's a grade-A douchebag, but that probably shouldn't be as much of a crime as it is. Although the false molestation allegations should definitely be prosecuted.
The Asian model of development is very good at getting results, very bad at admitting when its time to not be an autocratic nightmare. By all rights Singapore is a very well developed nation and the times for old draconian laws on free speech has passed, but of course that would mean letting people have an inch...which could lead to instability
I think the kid has immeasurable balls. like big massive titanium basketballs. I think he's trying to encourage other people to speak freely about their political opinions and about lee kuan yew and others in power. He's not showing any kind of remorse or that he's afraid or that he's going to let up. Maybe others will do the same. Run by a military dictatorship until the late 80s to late 90s
I don't even think people give a shit though, is this a major news story in the united states and canada? People probably should, but the media doesn't care about right and wrong so much as they care about easy.
