Whale Wars is a one-hour weekly show on Animal Planet. I'm sure you have heard of it, and you might have even watched an episode or two, but I think you should sit down and try to watch it.
Background:
The reason behind the Sea Shepherds and their mission to stop the Japanese whalers is simple. There is an international law that set a quota for the maximum number of whales that can be killed each year. All the whales that are killed must be used in the name of science. However, there is a loophole. Whatever is not used for scientific purposes must be used somehow. In other words, the Japanese kill a whale "for science," and then say they performed some tests and sell the "leftovers," i.e. the entire whale, on the meat market. The Sea Shepherds don't like that, so they're trying to stop it.

My Opinion on the "Whale War":
I personally could care less what exactly happens. I know both sides, and I think the Japanese whaling fleets shouldn't be allowed to do what they are doing, but I also think the Sea Shepherds are a bunch of environmentalist social rejects who are going about it all the wrong way.

My Opinion on the Show:
Despite being utterly annoyed by the Sea Shepherds and being unsupportive of the whalers, I must admit it is quite fun to watch the show. The Sea Shepherds go out in their little boats and launch attacks on the whalers, and at times it can get pretty intense.

Why You Should Watch:
Not because the whalers are bad, not because you need to learn about the troubles of whaling, but because the show is genuinely entertaining. It combines reality with action, and that is hard to do what with murder/assault laws and such. Plus, when there's not much action, you get to laugh at the absolutely idiotic situations the dumb Sea Shepherds get themselves into because they don't know how to use half their equipment.

Next Episode:
This one looks pretty cool, the Sea Shepherds are chasing down the Nisshin Maru, the flagship of the Japanese whaling ship, when it pulls aboard a speared whale right before the environmentalists' eyes. Talk about bitch-slap.

Saw this on commercials, Looks better then deadliest catch..
Do the whalers ever shoot harpoons at the hippies?
This show would be even more interesting if the Whalers shot explosive harpoons at them in international waters where there are no laws.
Deadliest Catch is actually pretty entertaining IMHO.
And no, they don't harpoon the Sea Shepherds, instead they fire a very powerful water cannon at them. If you look at the picture of the Nisshin Maru at the bottom of OP, those are the water cannons.

There's no such thing as "no laws." There are only limited rights to certain people in certain scenarios in international waters.
They should go and try this off the coast of Somalia. On a live stream, of course.
that whale meat looks pretty tasty
Dumb Sea Sheperds. Why dont the Japs take them prisoner?
I thought it was actually whales attacking each other when I heard about this.
Don't hunt me! :(
Dumb Sea Sheperds. Why dont the Japs take them prisoner?
They actually did that one time.
I want to see the one where they kill the whale in front of the Sea Shepherd ship. I was seriously laughing at the commercial and how it was trying to be dramatic, but the episode itself looks interesting. I saw a couple of the first episodes and enjoyed it.
The Sea shepards are a bunch of tards. The whalers aren't even doing anything illegal and all of a sudden the Sea shepards throw shit on their deck and try to foul their prop. I don't agree with whaling but it is legal.
They actually did that one time.
No, they didn't it was stupid. The Sea Shepherds threw themselves onto the ship and said they were taken prisoner, but the Japanese just wanted them off of the ship.
"Somalian Wars" Now that would be fucking awesome. With harpoons.
I'll set my alarm for 8:00 while I wait and have fun destroying and blowing things up on phys_temple.

Well to be fair, it actually is pretty dramatic seeing an endangered species being killed and having it's carcass hauled on board.
Regardless if you're a hippy pirate or not.

The commercial is pretty much the episode. They kill it, blood comes out, they bitch, credits.
"Somalian Wars" Now that would be fucking awesome. With high caliber weapons
Fixed. Also the self acclaimed "Sea Shepherds" or whatever sound like a bunch of idiots. If some tree hugging hippies cam and tried to board my boat and I was Japanese I'd shoot the fuck out of them.
Why are the Japanese so obsessed with whaling>?
Its a good industry, one whale is probably a big cash in for the crew.
Its a good industry, one whale is probably a big cash in for the crew.
So whaling is like a cash cow to them?
Why are the Japanese so obsessed with whaling>?
Because they're not scared to use their resources, and it's their culture, they don't give a shit what they eat.
I've actually done some research on the situation when I made my thread Whaling: The good, The bad, The ugly. What I found is that the Japanese are doing nothing illegal exept for the fact they are whaling in an Australian Antactic Whale Sancuary which the Australian government made clear that it is illegal to kill any cetacean within it's boundrys without propor permits that the Japanese do not have. I went as far as emailing the Secretary of the International Whaling Commission. She told me to email the Australian IWC representative which I have not done yet. I even emailed the Japanese Whaling Assocaiation about it to see if I could get a responce, I wrote the email as a man of science and not as a conservationist trying to stop whaling forever. I have yet to hear a responce.... (big surpirse)

The Japanese do Research whaling, it is illegal for them to hunt a whale souly for food. Although through loopholes they can sell the meat of the animal they hunted for research.
The Japanese also only hunt Minke whales which are in large abundance compared to the larger baleen whales like the endagered Blues and Humpbacks. Unfortuantly independent studys found Blue whale meat in alot of Japanese meat markets.
So whaling is like a cash cow to them?
It's a billion dollar industry, and their qouta is only 2500 so... do the math.
I was under the impression that whaling in international waters was illegal.
Bunch of dumb eco-hippies that have no idea how to run a boat endanger the lives of numerous japanese whalers while they ineffectually try to save some worthless whales.
Although what the Japanese whalers are doing may be wrong it is not illegal. They hunt the whales under the pretense that they are doing scientific research.
I know it's a dumb loophole but that doesn't mean these dumbshit hippies can go around ramming whaling boats and endangering HUMAN LIVES to save whales.
the sea sheppard is full of hippies, especially the one guy who doesnt believe in computers/radar etc
Also, what is throwing tear gas at a boat going to do when the crew is inside the bridge?

They are whaling in illegal Australian waters however. Australia also made it strickly illegal for the Japanese whalers to be there. Some newly(bout 1-2 years ago) elected officals said they were going to do something about it but have yet to do anything.
They should just go back to the Pacific were it is perfictly legal to do what they do.
They actually did that one time.
The captain actually told his crew members to get captured. That pretty much sums up how much of a shithead he is
They are whaling in illegal Australian waters however.
when it's hippies vs. anyone else, internet nerds always take the side of the other party regardless of who is more in the right (the whalers are breaking international law)
