A DECOMMISSIONED Concorde jet is to become London's latest tourist attraction.
The supersonic plane - currently languishing at Heathrow Airport - is to be displayed on a double-decker floating pontoon near to the London Eye as part of a $36m plan to let tourists see the aviation icon.
The jet would sit on the top deck, allowing visitors to access the famous aircraft once reserved for the rich and famous. The lower deck would contain an exhibition on the history of Concorde.
“I think an easily accessible Concorde exhibit in London would help remind people of what we have achieved, and seeing it may inspire someone to do it again,” Captain Les Brodie, who flew the last Concorde flight from
Heathrow to Bristol in November 2003, told UK paper Metro.
The plane, codenamed Alpha Bravo, made its last flight between New York and London on August 15, 2000 - weeks after the crash of an Air France Concorde outside Paris killed 113 people.
It was almost sold to Dubai last year.[/release]
Oh man... such beautiful piece of machinery, decomissioned and only used as a reminder of how awesome planes could be, makes me sad :smith:
I'd LOVE to go see it sometime :/
A never ending reminder of how corporations will use any accident or excuse to get a well-made product off the market so they can sell their obsolete technology.
To everyone who doesn't know.
The Concorde was the fastest commercial airline plane ever, however because it was so good it was a massive threat to any one who made 'Normal' commercial airliners.
And even though it has the best crash rate ever, with only ONE crash, EVER.
The corporations jumped on that single crash and used it to get them ALL taken out of airports.
I don't really know much about Concorde, could any one explain what defines it from other planes?

You've said it, brother :/
Seriously, seeing a Concorde parked like that sounds it'd be a bitter-sweet attraction...

It traveled very fast... How could you not know, are you like 10?
Mach 2.04 (~2,170 kilometres per hour / 1,350 mph) cruising speed
It was a brilliant but expensive piece of technology.

Out of 27 years of service, it only crashed _Once_... all other planes crashed at least once (not the A380 yet, right??), but it doesn't mean you have to take it off the market just like that... :/
Thread title is sort've misleading I thought that a Concorde flew to London or something :(
Concorde just too goddamn expensive to operate, I have been inside the one in New York, cramped too...

I have problems telling whether you're trolling or not because it seems you just pulled most of that out of your ass.
Actually, yeah you just must be trolling.
Have you seen pictures of that one crash you're talking about? Shits on fire yo.

Thought it was because the supersonic jump woke up everyone and his grandma on a city-wide radius.

Yeah it just took them a few decades to realize it.
That poor concord.
The concord was very expensive to operate and it could only break the sound barrier over water
The crash was just the straw that broke the camel's back

Was too expensive.

Uh no, it was removed because airline companies saw that people prefer cheaper plane tickets over fast travel, tickets for the Concorde were extremely expensive compared to regular commercial planes, hardly anyone used it making the Concorde a huge waste of money for the airline companies.
The crash was the last drop.
We've had one in the Museum of Flight in Scotland for forever now... Bloody Londoners stealing our limelight.

This is a fantastic idea. If all goes down I will travel to London just to see this. Massive piece of history, a huge technical achievement.

It was a massive fuel hog. Wasn't cheap to operate, to fly on, or to own. If they didn't taxi correctly, the plane would run out of fuel after touchdown or earlier.
Most planes actually fly at about 45,000ft. The Concord had a max service ceiling of 60,000ft.
Other planes fly around mach .82 (624MPH).
Also, the jet is very cramped. The ceiling inside (from what I heard) was very low, and if you were tall it was a pain in the neck, literally.
Its really a shame they were decommissioned. But the SST flagship had to call it quits sooner or later. The cost of maintenance, fuel, and everything else wasn't worth it.
Plus if lockheed proceeded with their SST prospects, the T2000 would've kicked the Concords ass. Even the B2707 would've done the trick too. Even the TU144 was quicker. However, T2000 never happened, B2707 had the same fate. TU144 was made by Tupolev, and as being a Tupolev, its a requirement for many issues and common crashes.
That and they made them no longer able to break the sound barrier, so paying 2 grand for a ticket for a jet that goes the same speed as a normal airliner isn't worth it.

Negative. They still broke the sound barrier, but had to do it away from civilization. nobody enjoys a sonic boom over their house.

I do.

You must keep everything well fastened, and probably in a material that doesn't shatter easily.
There's a Concorde near where I live, they're pretty cool. Got to go inside and everything.
East Fortune Airfield?

Actually, they lost money on every flight because it cost more to fly and maintain it than they could make from ticket sales.

It was way way way expensive. A Boeing could fit a ton more people, and use about the same amount of fuel because it went slower. The Concorde was ridiculously expensive because it can't fit as much people AND used more fuel to go fast. It was decommissioned because it was too expensive, and even if it was still around, it couldn't compete with mainstream planes that are a ton cheaper.
