Shahak Shapira has taken down all pictures from his popular and controversial Yolocaust site. The Israeli satirist said that many of the people involuntarily featured in the project had reached out to him and apologized. The satirist who started Yolocaust, a website that combined photos from the Holocaust memorial in Berlin with footage from Nazi concentration camps, announced that he was concluding the project "for now" on the project's homepage on Thursday. Shahak Shapira took down all Yolocaust pictures and instead posted an open letter, along with a selection of comments he received in reaction to the project. He wrote that in just eight days, his page was visited by over 2.5 million people. Shapira said that all people who were featured on Yolocaust reached out to him and that "[a]lmost all of them understood the message, apologized and decided to remove their selfies from their personal Facebook and Instagram profiles." Shapira, an Israeli Jew living in Germany, had published a series of photos on January 18 featuring young people posing in the Holocaust memorial in Berlin in all but reverent poses. One picture showed a couple taking a selfie, another featured a man juggling, several showed young women in yoga poses. The pictures were overlayed with photos from the actual Holocaust, creating a macabre juxtaposition. Along with his own letter, the satirist published an email he received from a young man featured in on the site, who wrote that "I didn't mean to offend anyone. Now I just keep seeing my words in the headlines. I have seen what kind of impact those words have and it's crazy and it's not what I wanted." The first picture on Shapira's site showed the author of the email jumping on the memorial's concrete blacks. It was captioned "Jumping on dead Jews @ Holocaust Memorial."
[t]http://www.dw.com/image/19087563_303.jpg[/t] [t]http://www.dw.com/image/37187484_401.jpg[/t] http://www.dw.com/en/satirist-concludes-yolocaust-project/a-37293870
I understand it's art, and I think it's garbage art.
I understand it's art, and I think it's garbage art.
You misunderstand the point. There's a holocaust memorial in Berlin that's supposed to be a solemn place of remembrance for the dead. Instead, tourists take pictures of them jumping around on the sculpture like it's a playground. What this project did was take those selfies and overlay them on top of real images of the holocaust. It was a clever project, though the architect himself said that the memorial was supposed to be used by however anyone saw fit.
I like the. I've been to holocaust memorials and you see people behaving inappropriately, kids running around etc
I understand it's art, and I think it's garbage art.
Okay then
Technically, it would had made alot more sense if the satirist choose actual concentration camps where people take selfies than the memorial in Berlin. It would had made a bigger impact as well. It is somewhat understandable why some tourists might think its just a simple art installation than an actual memorial. If they were less cultured in terms of understanding what happened to Europe (for example, the throngs of Chinese/korean/Japanese tourists) they see it as 'oh cool its a art installation' if they missed the big sign that says 'HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL' Whereas people who travel on buses out of cities to concentration camps, its hard to not know of the horrors that happened there, since the tour guide on the bus probably explained what the place is. It doesn't help that the memorial was built with the concept in mind that its up to individual interpretation, hence it looking like a bunch of concrete blocks to those unaware of its purpose.
I understand it's art, and I think it's garbage art.
How is it garbage art? The subjects themselves may have been distasteful, but the piece itself is a perfectly legitimate criticism of them.

Was a great project, shame he took it down.
Oh I was very confused as well. Don't understand how he would offend anyone.

It's a bit different to a memorial in a capital city
Oh I was very confused as well. Don't understand how he would offend anyone.
Well, I slightly edited my original post to reflect the nuance of the situation A memorial is not a synagogue. It's a public space for people to do with as they please. Sure, taking it as far as saying "Jumping on dead jews @holocaustmemorial" is super tacky. ...But there's something extremely moving about seeing kids playing and having fun at such a solemn place.
The people who took all those pictures have to be massive fucking idiots. I sifted through the site before it went down and it's unbelievable the stupid shit people would do because they want those sweet sweet Instagram likes. I'm glad they got ridiculed by this little project. By the way, for the people saying they were all kids - they were not. Some looked like late teenagers and others looked in their 20's. It certainly wasn't naivety.

I was at Auschwitz, saw a korean lady taking selfies on a selfie stick Oh, don't forget the throngs of Israeli taking selfies while holding the Israeli flag.

I suppose in that sense the piece was effective. It is not like he forced anyone to apologise or named and shamed them. If I was the subject of the jumping photo (if I had done something like that) I wouldn't have felt bad enough to apologise. It might even be cool to be featured on some art project.
I understand it's art, and I think it's garbage art.
then you clearly don't understand art then
then you clearly don't understand art then
or you don't understand subjective opinions
one of the reactions is a spam email :v:
or you don't understand subjective opinions
But like, do you not get it? I don't understand how you can think it's garbage art... Even if you disagree with it, you have to admit it's pretty clever.
But like, do you not get it? I don't understand how you can think it's garbage art... Even if you disagree with it, you have to admit it's pretty clever.
because its awfully simple, like haha I am ironically posing with memorials
because its awfully simple, like haha I am ironically posing with memorials
Nobody did anything ironically. The satirist just took actual completely serious selfies of people taken at the memorial and juxtaposed them against holocaust pictures.
because its awfully simple, like haha I am ironically posing with memorials
Are you dense dude? I explained it for you right below your comment.
Nobody did anything ironically. The satirist just took actual completely serious selfies of people taken at the memorial and juxtaposed them against holocaust pictures.
I had been tricked by my own good perception of people, I had imagined the people in the non-edited pictures were also actors, hired by the artist, to make fun of tourists posing with memorials. I never imagined, even while reading the article, like my mind just subconsciously went "nah dude people wouldnt do it this extremely" [editline]27th January 2017[/editline]
Are you dense dude? I explained it for you right below your comment.
yeah I stand corrected, sorry
Imagine the honor to build such memorial.
People like that guy the reason people are swayed to the extremes, he's such a pretentious hollier than thou ass Not saying this because of yolocaust though, that shit is ironically hillarious
People like that guy the reason people are swayed to the extremes, he's such a pretentious hollier than thou ass Not saying this because of yolocaust though, that shit is ironically hillarious
What's pretentious about him and this project?
What's pretentious about him and this project?
Check out that guy online, he's a douche
Ok So Guys Don't have any kind of fun whatsoever while you are staying at Berlin because the Red Army pillaged and raped and killed or sent young germans to gulags. If you have pics of yourself having fun in Berlin please reconsider what you've done. Thx. (User was banned for this post ("Shitpost" - Novangel))
People like that guy the reason people are swayed to the extremes, he's such a pretentious hollier than thou ass Not saying this because of yolocaust though, that shit is ironically hillarious
He started the art project with a goal in mind and he achieved it, that is the opposite of pretentious.

I mean forgiveness is great and all but whether these people realise what they did was monstrously disrespectful or not is up for debate.
I like the. I've been to holocaust memorials and you see people behaving inappropriately, kids running around etc
Why the fuck would you bring your kids to a holocaust memorial

Even if some of the people in question don't rethink how they behave, this at least raises awareness of the issue.
