"People suffered yesterday in much the same way we did in 9/11," Sheriff Kenny Furlong told a news conference.
"Families, communities, and the entire nation have been affected by what happened here."
The death toll of four was the greatest loss of life ever in the city of 55,000, where the last homicide was three years ago.
"This is unquestionably the most devastating attack in Carson City's history," Furlong said.
Brig. Gen. William Burks of the Nevada National Guard mourned soldiers who had braved bullets and bombs in faraway Iraq and Afghanistan only to be cut down over breakfast at homey IHOP.
Three Nevada Guardsmen have been killed overseas since 2001.
"In a few short hours, we lost the same number of soldiers we lost in operation Iraqi freedom," Burks said.
Mentally-ill grocery clerk Eduardo Sencion opened fire with an AK-47 at the restaurant early Tuesday morning, shooting 11 people: five members National Guard and six civilians.

I myself live in Nevada and this totally ruined my afternoon.
RIP
The sheriff in Carson City, Nev. said Tuesday's pancake house rampage, which killed three National Guardsmen and an elderly woman was "not unlike 9/11."
I'm sorry...what?
well, if they're pulling he's mentally ill hes not a jihadist so why are they mentioning 9/11
Because this is the worst "~attack~" on America since 9/11?
except it has nothing to do with 9/11 and the date is most likely a coincidence
except it has nothing to do with 9/11 and the date is most likely a coincidence
the worst part is, you're not even kidding, are you?
you are a cold, detached individual
I know hooray for guns and shit we should have the right to use them blah blah, but there is a serious problem when mentally ill people can get their hands on assault rifles, or any firearm for that matter.
senseless murder
A local restaurant owner told the Associated Press he tried to shoot the attacker with his own weapon, but he entered the pancake restaurant before he had a chance to take aim.
"But when he came at me, when somebody is pointing an automatic weapon at you - you can't believe the firepower, the kind of rounds coming out of that weapon," said Ralph Swagler, who owns Locals BBQ & Grill.
RIP to those who died, this is horrible...
And as for the comparison to 9/11, I think the mean it's affected the town in the same way that 9/11 affected America as a whole, rather than comparing the "attack" on its own to 9/11. In other words, they're saying everyone is shocked by the events at the moment, which is expected.

Hang on. I thought there was measures put in place to kind of prevent this sort of thing. Shit like Background checks.
To a small town of 55,000, four deaths and a total of 11 injured can be a lot.
Three thousand died in 9/11, but that is 3000 out of 282 million.
So yes, it can be an adequate comparison statistically, but especially so when he was comparing the grief that was felt. If you think that because it was 'just four people' that it isn't grief-worthy, then I don't really know what to say.

Nevada does rank among the worst for treating the mentally impaired. But as much as I know he could have got it from a family member.

I thought there were measures too. Like not letting people buy AK-47s.
edit: Oh, wow, apparently semi-AKs are actually legal.
Seriously, I understand things like hunting shotguns, but do people really need AKs to hunt and defend themselves?

This. How many fucking times do you have to shoot your rifle after immersing it in mud? Just get a Saiga.

Seriously, I understand things like hunting shotguns, but do people really need AKs to hunt and defend themselves?
See the issue isn't buying the Semi-Auto variants of weapons, the issue is that you can buy the conversion kit to make it fully automatic at the same time you get the gun. And there are no checks on buying the conversion kits.

What I thought I was the only one in Elko on Facepunch. That's pretty cool.
On topic, I heard about this almost right after it happened and I was really confused. At first, I heard the guy drove up in a van, shot a guy on a motorcycle, and then killed the two Guardsmen after they tried to confront him.
