Although it says spoiler free, there are some visuals from the later game so be aware. Pretty great for those who don't know all that much about the game, Yoko Taro even responded to it: https://twitter.com/yokotaro/status/849523282193920000
Gonna play it as soon as the internet rolls over to the next billing cycle and I can actually fit downloading the game into this pathetic excuse for a download quota. Fuck Telstra.
why is he pronouncing it like 'oughto-mata'. just pronounce it like automaton but ta
Powered through this game before fucking of to Finland. A great ride and some of the most fun and engagement I've gotten out of a game in years.
he is japanese, it is not a japanese word
Literally everyone Ive heard say the name says ottomotta, I'd hazard to say they're probably in the right here rusty ol' boy
he is japanese, it is not a japanese word
You realize the way Japanese pronounce English words is by translating it as close as possible using their own alphabet right? Automata -> "O" "to" "ma" "ta" -> オートマタ Read as "oh" "toe" "mah" "tah" and stylized as "Automata" Idk why you're being petty about it anyway lol
29 minutes of non-stop one-sided praise as if an unrivaled package of entertainment. Eh..... I kinda wanted to hear some actual deconstruction not constant "I used to ignore this but guys this game is so fucking perfect in all aspect" GAME OF THE GENERATION!!! Not that I'm saying the game isn't great, but man this is reaching the fanboy preach level.
As much as I LOVED the game and will gush about it for hours on end, it's clearly not a perfect game, which is what a 10/10 implies. The combat, while invigorating and fun, does get a little bit stale from it's lack of depth compared to Platinum's other hack-and-slash action games. The open world also feels very empty and colorless at times (even if it's the intentional of the author, it doesn't make it entirely permissible). The story ends bringing forth only one real theme to a natural conclusionary point; the game opts to instead explores multiple deep and philosophical points over its course, which is very nice of course, but it seems like they bit off more than they could reasonably finish and explain in a single game. (DLC or N:A2????) ALLLL that being said game of the fuckin' year personally played it for 45 hours straight and I loved every part of it.
I watched a video on the story of Nier as a whole and holy shit it is probably one of the most convoluted plots I have ever seen.

Nothing is perfect and I've never watched a movie, read a book or played a game free of faults or criticism. When a review praises something as such I don't trust it.
I am definitely in the boat of ignore this title but I suppose I should look into it more - even if I am doubtful of "best in all aspects all the time"
My friends seem to have heavily differing opinions on this game, some of them say it's a generic hack and slash that is popular because of how the developers marketed the sex appeal in the game, and others say the game is 100% perfect and has no faults. What is the middle ground?
I'm a huge NieR fanboy, even made a comment under the video criticizing him for putting Automata's OST above the original, but even I can recognize this game is not perfect. The balance is destroyed when you stack chips in a certain way, it certiantly can get repetitive hack-and-slash as once you find a good combination you tend to stick with it, the way sidequests are presented sometimes is frustrating, etc etc That all being said, this game was absolutely fantastic and I consider it a tough challenge for another game to knock it off it's current GOTY pedestal. This game does more to show innovation in it's genre then I've seen in a long time. What is the middle ground?
The middle ground is that your millage may vary with how much you put into it. Some people fell into the trap of getting ending A, and seeing the credits assuming that was the whole game. So they miss 2/3 of the game by stopping there, all they see is a short hack and slash experience and miss the new mechanics and story that comes after. And yeah, like other third person games before it, there's a myriad of weapon and attack combinations that you can really sink your teeth into, but if you don't want to learn those then it'll seem just like a dodge+hack n' slash. There's also new gameplay elements that come up that I won't say due to spoilers, but are a real surprise and treat towards the end. Is it perfect? No. But the enjoyment someone can get out of it ties to how much you want to stick around it's universe. You don't have to be particularly skilled to enjoy the complexity that shows itself if you play though the main endings. But it is one hell of a ride. And yeah, there are butts. Yoko Taro: [t]https://my.mixtape.moe/eymptx.jpg[/t] But that's quickly overshadowed by the interesting characters, world, and combat. As another facepuncher once put it: Come for the rears, stay for the tears.
Literally everyone Ive heard say the name says ottomotta, I'd hazard to say they're probably in the right here rusty ol' boy
no but rusty is always right everyone is wrong mommy they're saying i'm wrong
Yeah I couldn't get through this video when it got posted in the Nier thread either. Too much praise. The game is good, I'd recommend it to most people. But it's not perfect, far far farrr from perfect. Which is fine, because it's also an improvement or on-par in almost all aspects from the previous titles in the series. But I feel like this level of gushing is kinda' overblown and will be more likely to put people who are potentially interested off of the game rather than entice them. I feel like a lot of the charm in the older drakengard/nier games is the way they blew away expectations, and if people go into things expecting something absolutely incredible and weird that charm might be lost.
Idk why you're being petty about it anyway lol
well, it IS rusty after all..
Just pronounce the word however you want really, it's not that important. It's based on an English word, but scrambled a bit through Japanese. In a way, all pronunciations of it are wrong from some POV, and as such it doesn't matter.

"Guys it's pronounced jif and not gif"
This game is a joy to play. Solid gameplay, solid controls, solid music, solid quests, and solid mechanics that freshen the genre up a bit. Honestly pick it up if you haven't already done so. It's great.
I like it just because it plays with your preconceptions about game design. Not like dumb Indy shit, just ideas and concepts I've never seen before in any other game. Kind of like what Hideo Kojima does.

Rating scales for games are ass anyway, 10 implies perfection which is unobtainable. Anything less than 8 is considered garbage.
giving games 10/10s is just something you shouldn't do no matter what, that's just unrealistic, silly and comes off as ass kissing. He was totally right about the huge turn offs though, the sexualized protag just makes the game look cheap which is a shame.
If there's no 10/10 rating on your scale, 9/10, 9.5/10, 9.9/10 or whatever you do give is just the new 10/10. It doesn't mean perfect, it means it achieved the highest possible rating.

No game could ever get a 0 anyway.
Rating scales for games are ass anyway, 10 implies perfection which is unobtainable. Anything less than 8 is considered garbage.
I don't like this line of thought and that's not how a 10 in game reviews should be seen as. They're akin to "this particular game stood so far out and was so superior in quality that only a small handful of games could match or exceed it." Not "this game has achieved ultimate perfection and has zero room for improvement"
too bad about price, drm and port on pc. I was interested in it but it doesn't look like a $60 game and the port quality is subpar, and i'm not definitely interested in paying that much to get fucked by drm. Maybe after a crack is out and its on sale for $20 i'll buy it and actually own it. edit: not here to argue why draconian drm isn't in my interests, you're free to love it if thats your thing, some of us have standards.
