• Brazilian police to use 'Robocop-style' glasses at World Cup
A small camera fitted to the glasses can capture 400 facial images per second and send them to a central computer database storing up to 13 million faces. The system can compare biometric data at 46,000 points on a face and will immediately signal any matches to known criminals or people wanted by police. If there is a match a red signal will appear on a small screen connected to the glasses, alerting the police officer of the need to take further action or make an arrest. The devices will soon be tested at football matches and concerts and police in Brazil, South America's biggest country, are already planning to use them during the next World Cup. The camera will generally be used to scan faces in crowds up to 50 metres (164ft) away but can be adjusted, if searching for a specific target, to recognise faces as far as 12 miles away. Military Police officials from Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, which will both host key games in the World Cup, have been given demonstrations of how the device works. Major Leandro Pavani Agostini, of Sao Paulo's Military Police, said: "It's something discreet because you do not question the person or ask for documents. The computer does it. "To the naked eye two people may appear identical but with 46,000 points compared, the data will not be beaten." He said the device will be useful to police trying to monitor many different locations and events, ranging from airports and bus terminals to concerts and football matches. "I can insert into the database a supporter who was involved in a brawl on the field and even with the old images, he can be located in the future," added the Major. Robocop, the American film of 1987, told the story of a police officer who was killed by criminals but re-created as a cyborg with an array of weaponry and built-in zoom vision. :science: This is awesome.
It's about time they had something like this. They need to bring that technology over here! Beats having to memorise scroats' faces
intresting
if searching for a specific target, to recognise faces as far as 12 miles away.
that is amazing.
Now imagine in the future, where a cop can look at you and view your entire browsing history
that is amazing.
Also likely bull, seeing as the acuity at which you can see something at twelve miles on a warm day is pretty poor, even with the best lenses. (At that sort of distance, lens quality starts to matter less than how the air in the area you're looking is.)
Brazil, fuck yeah.
Was going to post :science: but noticed it was posted, so just going to say "Hope they're somehow in Max Payne 3". And awesome.

so the brazilian facepunch users that live in there basement wont get caught by it as they dont go out. so when the time is right they will go on a crime spree and wint get arrested. smart.
Now imagine in the future, where a cop can look at you and view your entire browsing history
He would go blind. Still nice to see usefull tech, though 12 miles? I can just imagine some cartoon style massively telescoping lenses.
My vision is augmented.
Think how long 12 miles is... I'm really doubting that part.
Now imagine in the future, where a cop can look at you and view your entire browsing history
I would get in so much shit.
Think how long 12 miles is... I'm really doubting that part.
1 mile=1.6km, so 1.6X12=19.2km
And all that work can be destroyed by wearing face paint or a mask
Fuck the facial recognition, what it needs is software that identifies assholes blowing vuvuzelas and prints out a warrant for their arrest.
Why are you guys nitpicking 12 miles when just the idea of this technology, even for use with under 100 yards, is pretty awesome?
They should just make glasses that shoot lasers.
Holy fuck. Thats kinda scary..
Fuck the facial recognition, what it needs is software that identifies assholes blowing vuvuzelas and prints out a warrant for their arrest.
Why do you think people in stadiums are packed so close together? Just have a predator overhead, any group with vuvuzelas will be immediately destroyed.
Why do you think people in stadiums are packed so close together? Just have a predator overhead, any group with vuvuzelas will be immediately destroyed.
and so will everyone else in the vicinity and likely the stadium too
My vision is augmented. [img_thumb]http://beefjack.com/files/2010/12/jc_denton.jpg[/img_thumb]
this made me visualize a Brazilian JC going "huehuehuehuehueh" in his monotone voice.
What's that Brazil. You're holding the world cup in 3 years time. How convenient!
I know that if this was somewhere else, like the US, or Australia. People would be bitching that it's a violation of privacy.
That is fucking awesome.
Amazing that they could fit that sort of technology into glasses.
They should integrate the new lenses which increase low light vision and overall eyesight drastically, even over human normals.
Suddenly sales of these skyrocket
